    Steps I did:
    1. Installed Zaz skeleton normally.
    2. Installed this mod and chose Male Player in the FOMOD installer because I play a male character.
    3. Copied the Knee Fix skeleton.nif and pasted it inside Meshes\Actors\character\NPCAssets where the text file "Put the other skeleton.nif here.txt" is located.

So after that I load a save file and the game crashes immediately.
Edit: just read borninmarch's comment and tried the work-around and it seems to have fixed the crashes.

Now that I think about it, it kind of makes sense. The fix isn't about the files of Zaz (excluding skeleton.nif) being in the folder, it's about "any" skeleton files. I bet even the vanilla ones would do the trick. Because you made it so that folder is considered the entire data for females, that means it doesn't go back to the bsa files when files are missing like with normal mods because of the redirection. And the reason why this doesn't happen when you're playing as a female is because the esp is different. I didn't check but I am assuming you redirected only one file in the female esp, while redirected more in the male esp that's why it crashes when using the male esp because there would be missing files that should've been there besides the skeleton.nif.

I was having this exact same issue while testing with a male player with LMCC but I did a bit more testing based on borninmarch's comment. I tested with ZEX skeleton.hkx file and the knee fix skeleton.nif in the NPCAssets folder but still got crashes. I then copied the skeleton_female_faceBones.nif from ZEX into the NPCassets and I did not CTD. The knee fix appears to be working on the CCBE females and my male character doesn't seem to have any ill affects from the knee fix. I then removed the ZEX skeleton.hkx from the NPCassets and was still able to load my save without CTD and everything appears to be working.
So at this point I am playing as a male player  with the skeletonmaleplayerLMCC.esp, and the skeleton.nif from CBBE knee fix and the skeleton_female_faceBones.nif from ZEX skeleton in the NPCAssets folder and not getting a CTD when load a male character save.
Unfortunately I have no idea why this works and I am unsure if there is any hidden issues that might be happening from not having any of the other ZEX files in NPCassets.
I hope this might help others that are having the same problem.

To add onto this (I had this issue) and share what works for me, if you are playing as a male character, have LMCC installed (don't know if this matters), and regularly installed ZeX (like through a mod manager), but just put the knee fix into the correct directory, your game crashes. I noticed that when not near a female character, my game was fine. But as I traveled closer to Boston, my game would crash within a certain radius of it. I assume that I either didn't encounter any female NPCs on my way there, but as I got there, it detected female characters and it crashed. I also teleported a female NPC to me, and my game would crash. To fix this, I manually downloaded both ZeX and the knee fix. I installed this mod, then put the one file extracted from the knee fix mod (skeleton.nif) into the Data\Meshes\actors\character\NPCAssets folder, and then I put everything that is in ZeX besides the file that overwrote the knee fix one (skeleton.hkx/skeleton_faceBonesnif/skeleton_female_faceBones.nif), and it seems to have worked. I also have ZeX installed as you would install it with a mod manager, and it doesn't seem to cause any conflict. Thanks again to the mod author and others for providing support!

This is all very confusing. I do not know why it does not work sometimes but I'm just glad it pretty much always works out in the end. Thanks to everyone who is providing support for those that have problems with the mod.

Digging a bit further I unpacked the main FO4 meshes bsa to see the structure and there is a skeleton_female_faceBones.nif file in the main BSA. Now this is pure speculation but based on what Anqayas wrote if the game no longer looks at the main BSA file path for files if you have redirected via an ESP to a loose folder there could be an issue if when referencing the file path to skeleton.nif for females if it requires the skeleton_female_faceBones.nif to be with it. With the installation of this mod in a male configuration only the skeleton.nif is in the NPCassets folder for females (the knee fix) which might be why its CTD as the skeleton_female_faceBones.nif is not in the same path.
For female players the ZEX mod has all of the skeleton files in it so won't have this issue as they are all in the NPCassets folder as part of this mods install process.
As for why it works for some people without doing this only the modgods could tell you as everyone's mod setup is pretty much unique.

Indeed. My main character is female, as such I had put the ZeX files in NPCAssets. Everything is fine, I can play the game normally without missing characters, crashes, or other issues. But then I also once tested a male character and had put only the skeleton.nif form Knee Fix in NPCAssets, but nothing happened and I was like "all of this just works". I think the problem is just this weird ass game engine.

@fredfunk did that fix it? I mean getting the missing skeleton files from the vanilla BSA?

@karlarsch1913 I bet if you deleted all files inside \NPCAssets except for skeleton.nif from Knee Fix mod and played as a male it will crash. Provided that you load the game with a female character around. I assume now you have the other two files skeleton_faceBones.nif and skeleton_female_faceBones.nif and that's why it doesn't crash.

This whole thread really should be on the front page under "important notes".

This is not obvious from the description.

The weird thing is that it works for me without the other files. But anyways, I will make this thread a sticky.

But what if male character is out of the question and you just want to use both ZEX skeleton for female and the CBBE Knee fix? How would that work? Or do I have to dream on?

That's not possible unfortunately. You can only use one skeleton per character model. You would have to copy the changes from one skeleton over to the other, but I don't know how to do that.

To add onto this thread, I've been getting crashes with a female character (using leg fix skeleton) and default male skeleton in NPCAssets, any time I enter a cell with a male character (or load a save where I'm in an area with males). I'm using Pip-Pad and it's LMCC patch, which also has a skeleton path in the esp, so I tried changing it to the meshes\actors\character\NPCassets folder, but unfortunately this results in a crash too. Might have to do with the fact I did this on an existing save instead of a new game but not sure.

My guess is that like other people mentioned, this mod should also include the default faceBone nifs (for male and female) in loose file format, since this mod by default forces the game to use files from outside of the main BSA. Though I'm not sure if faceBones are included in the default BSA.

I just wanted to add in I appreciate everyones contribution here - this was exactly my issue - male character, female npcs with zex - same symptoms, crashing when load save or near a female npc, I used BAE to extract the original game's skeleton_facebones and female_facebones and put them in the npcassets folder along with the cbbe skeletor adjustments nif, now it works like a charm!

Can someone please stick this on top.

      IT WORKS !!!

use Fallout B.E.A to extract skeleton_faceBones.nif and skeleton_female_faceBones.nif from Fallout4 - meshes.ba2 in Data folder.

Put them into Data\meshes\Actors\Character\NPCAssets folder created by Gender-Specific Skeletons along with other .nif file

      Launch game and profit. !

      For me:

If i play as Female Character :

      • Install Skeletal Adjustments CBBE Knee Fix (Choose Vanilla Installation Type | Choose Vanilla Skeleton under GSS for Male NPC)
      • Then, Install ZaZ Extended Skeleton
      • Then, Install GSS (Choose Female Player Option | Copy skeleton.nif , skeleton.hkx , skeleton_faceBones.nif from ZaZ Skeleton to NPCAssets in Data\Meshes\actors\character)

MAH MAN! fredfunk's solution got me out that funk! whew... and now i should really get some sleep since i spent most the evening fooling around with mods and researching them. sweet. i mean we all just thoroughly enjoy the absolute thrill of finding solutions to mod fixes more than actually playing the damn game amirite?! it's like looking at porn mags for the articles. ah well, there's a reason why this game is still kickin after almost 7 years. cheers to all the modders out there :)

I think the problem here is the knee fix mod's fomod puts the skeleton inside the NPC folder instead of the vanilla location. That is what's causing the confusion. Plus some confusing options.

So this should be the steps for normal players (playing with a female).

    1. Install GSS latest version.
    2. Install Knee fix - pick your version (girly, etc) with GSS option selected.
    3. Manually move "skeleton.nif" from "NPCAssets" to "characterassets." Both under "meshes\actors\character."
    4. Manually extract the contents (4 files) of "meshes\actors\character\CharacterAssets" from the latest Zex file to the "NPCAssets" folder.
    5. Confirm in game you and female NPCs have fixed knees.

    Hope this helps

    -Roh

EDIT - Actually. You now supposed to use the latest version of Knee fix with this >> https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/56115/

Im pretty dumb so i need some clarification. Do i need to make another folder on top of the one that the mod creates? Also can i install it mid game or do i need to do a new file for it to work?

Can you with this mod customize the player or NPCs size by scaling the skeleton using the NifSkope? If so how? Because I changed the skeleton.nif scale and the NPC's nor player got bigger or smaller?

Does anybody know why my eyebrows disappear after installing this? I have an eyebrow from THbrows mod, but it disappears with this. Even if I go to looks menu there are only the default brow options. I uninstall this and my brows reappear, on my face of course.

I need your help, because I think I didn't install gss correctly. And since some got the mod to work here, it's probably my fault.
i use vortex and install gss with female actor, then male actor manually. but what do you do with the sceleton.nif that is to be copied into the folder? And which file is that exactly? Everywhere in the folders there is a note "is managed by Vortex". I don't want to make a mistake there.

Then I install Legs for days vanilla, load ZeXV5 before Legs for days and it works. Except for the male bodies (with GSS option installed. They are then totally distorted.

But that's actually supposed to be the case, that through GSS the male bodies continue to work with ZeXV5, right?
    I'm at a loss.
