Don't be "that guy" who doesn't read the instructions, wastes hours (or days) of time troubleshooting problems, and then complains because their Fallout 4 installation doesn't work right.

If you treat your load order like garbage, Fallout 4 is going to play like garbage.

Follow these simple rules and you will have a working version of Horizon:

  • Pre-combined meshes with Horizon's addons

Pre-combines in Fallout 4 and how it impacts Horizon's addons

    UPDATE 4/17/2024:
    - Horizon v1.9.4 adds a significant amount of optimizations to settlements.

Q:  "I've heard people say to NEVER use any mods that break pre-combines.  Doesn't some of Horizon's addons break pre-combines?"

For starters, don't listen to anyone who says to unconditionally avoid ALL mods that break precombines.  They often don't even know how precombines really work, and are just blindly relaying info they heard like parrots.  These people don't understand there are gray areas to precombine disabling, which can be fine.  It's the same type of people who blindly think all "scripts" are bad, when Fallout 4 uses 10,000 scripts by itself.  Scripts aren't inherentl...

  • Horizon - FAQ on Survival and Starting Off

I sometimes get told that while some of my game balancing makes the gameplay better, it is sometimes unrealistic.  This is not true at all.  I think many Fallout players forget that you are in a post-war fictional universe, and NOT the clean environment of modern times.  Please keep that in mind when determining what is realistic and what isn't.

Q: How come I have to eat so much food per day to satisfy hunger?

Actually, you don't.  Hunger in Horizon is plenty realistic.  I think some players are just misjudging the size of meat and the size of food portions, as well as many other factors.

In Fallout 4, the size of the food you eat is strictly based on it's caps value.  In Horizon, you need 96 "food points" (i.e. caps value) per day to keep u...

  • Horizon - Combat NPCs Companions Weapons Armor

This article covers: Combat changes, NPCs, Companions, Weapons, and Armor changes.

Most NPCs in Horizon are completely rebalanced to allow for much better and smoother scaling while you level.

Companions are overhauled to be much more balanced, and have a leveling system and unique upgrade options.

    Critical Damage Overhaul

Critical damage should occur because of the following situations:

Skill - Being skillful enough to aim at weak points even inside of vulnerable areas
Surges - Energy weapons could potentially be overloaded to provide extra damage at times
Strength - Using brute strength to occasionally add more power to your swing

Critical damage is now intended to only work well if yo...

  • Horizon: Crafting - Settlements - Cargo Bots - and more

This article contains:  Crafting, Settlements, Caravan Travel system, Cargo Bots, Settlement Progression, and Resource Production.

Many new objects and devices are created in Horizon, in order to extend gameplay and to expand settlement building.

Horizon also introduces many new crafting components, to fill gaps in the crafting system.

The Tech Lab is a new crafting station, used to craft devices, tools, parts, electronics, and settlement ingredients.  Ideally, you will want one of these early on in your main settlement.

    Settlement Crafting Parts

Turret Deployment Parts - these parts can be carried with you, to make setting up simply pipe turrets at new settlements easier

  • Horizon - Health Management, Survival Changes, Radiation, Doctors

This article contains: Health Management, Medical/Survival Supplies, Radiation, Doctors, and Survival changes.

Horizon has a very balanced and finely-tuned health system, that completely changes how health is managed in Fallout 4.

The overabundance of cheap and easy-to-get healing in the Fallout games really trivializes any sense of a true survival feel, and it needed to change.  The only way to heal in Horizon, is through actual medical treatment.  Eating food or sleeping to heal off all your injuries or limb damage is gone.

Note that all healing is now fixed values, instead of percentages. This is why Horizon's healing system works so well.

Even though regaining health is more challenging, your max health pool will be higher th...

  • Horizon - Training, Perks, Levels, Magazine Recipes

This article covers:  Experience, Levels, Perks, Focused Specializations, Magazine Recipes

Horizon uses a more focused and controlled leveling curve. Everything in the game is rebalanced around this.

Leveling is rescaled, in order to balance out progression better.  Reaching level 30 in Horizon, is like reaching the old level 60.

This keeps the player's level within a stricter boundary that can be controlled better.  The game should continually be challenging all the way until the end content. This also helps remove that "arcade" feel, where levels are poping up way too fast, making it seem like gaining a level doesn't even mean anything.

Even though you are getting half the levels for your time spent, you will get bo...

  • Horizon - Economy, Loot, Lock Breaching, Vendors, Exploration

This article covers: Economy, Loot, Lock Breaching, Vendors, and Exploration

Horizon's loot system is very detailed, and covers a large array of containers and NPCs. Many new items are added to the game to increase the feel that you're in a living world.

Containers often contain more appropriate loot. Locked containers also give more appropriate bonus loot based on the type of container (safes, ammo boxes, etc.)

Horizon also gives purpose to some crafting ingredients that weren't widely used before, adding more diversity to hunting down materials. Certain junk items are even converted into real crafting ingredients (such as tools), instead of just being scrap.

Overall, more items feel useful and valuable.
