Fallout 4

This article is kind of a "developer commentary" - it contains information that may or may not be interesting to some people. None of this is required to play/understand the contents of this mod, but be warned that this article does nonetheless contain spoilers.

With that out of the way, here's some more or less interesting trivia about the locations of this mod!

Buried Super-Duper Mart

  • This location was designed to offer a lot of common components in a region that otherwise lacked them (central Glowing Sea).
  • I originally planned this location to have a basement (like the Lexington counterpart), but I scrapped the idea when I couldn't sensibly fit that with the idea of providing a safehouse for Survival players. In the original idea, ghouls would ambush the player through holes in the floor; in the final version, they drop down from the inner ceiling instead.
  • This location includes two references to the Metro series: the Kalash (see Unique Weapons article for details), and the survivor's date of birth - Metro Exodus names July 6th, 2013 as the day the nuclear war broke out.

Concord Steakhouse

  • I had the basic idea for this location as far back as 2019, but it took me about five years until I finally decided to make it a reality. However, I originally planned the setting to be an apartment building rather than a restaurant. Furthermore, I had designed it to be an early-game dungeon, and the closest apartment building was in Lexington (I wanted to scatter the locations across the game world, and I had already finished Lexington Shopping Center). In the end, I had to settle for the current location.
  • The cannibal suffering progressively worsening fine motor skills is a real-life symptom of Kuru, a prion disease associated with cannibalism.
  • The trap that the cannibal attempts to build (and messes up) actually appears in Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
  • Metro Exodus spoiler: The cannibal deciding to call himself "Ivanov" is a reference to the Winter chapter of Metro Exodus, where the leader of the Yamantau cannibals introduces himself as "Communications Officer Major Ivanov" over radio to lure victims to their hideout.

Cutthroat Hovel

  • Dead-Bolt was meant to appear as a named raider boss in this location. He was replaced with a generic boss NPC when I couldn't figure out how to set up a hidden quest to replace him with a generic boss for subsequent visits. He is still in the mod files and can be spawned with the console; he has an unique appearance, and his stats are identical to Tower Tom in Beantown Brewery.
  • It took me a very long time to come up with a name for this place. Unlike other locations in the mod, it does not use it's pre-war name.
  • I originally planned this location to have a book return terminal in the lobby of the dorm building. Although I could set up the machine itself, I couldn't figure out how the return prizes were defined (modding tutorial, anyone?). It was replaced by a Nuka-Cola machine In the released version of the location.

Dodd Plastics Factory

  • This was the first proper dungeon I ever created. Originally I intended it to be a food processing plant that produced Pork 'n' Beans, but with two canneries already in the game I later decided it'd have produced something else that's far less useful - in the end it turned out to be hairbrushes.
  • I also originally planned to make the water deep enough to irradiate the player, but after some playtesting I felt it would force some players to move through it as quickly as possible and thus discourage exploring. As such I lowered the water level just a bit.

Lechmere Station

  • Lechmere Station is a real-world location in Boston, and it's location very closely matches the one in the game. However, to my understanding it's above ground in real life.
  • The two real-life stations that connect to Lechmere (Science Park/West End and Union Square) do not appear in the game; however, the next station from Science Park/West End is North Station, which appears as Valenti Station in-game. Sapper's Note mentions blocking the way to Valenti as their mission, which in turn is a nod to FROST Survival Simulator.
  • Originally a fourth unique weapon could be found next to the sapper's skeleton: a unique Pipe Gun named "Bastard Gun". The weapon was fully implemented and functional, but I ended up cutting it because I felt the mod would start to feel cluttered with unique loot. The weapon would come with an unique effect that increased it's magazine size by 6 rounds and rate of fire by 20%, and was a reference to the eponymous makeshift weapon from the Metro series. However, I intend to include it in a subsequent mod.
  • The overall style of this station is heavily based on several flood, mirelurk-infested metro stations in Fallout 3. Fallout 4 has relatively few subway stations that are inhabited by non-human enemies, so I wanted to offer just that.

Lexington Shopping Center

  • The inspiration for this location came from a real-world underground shopping center I've visited, which also features spiral staircases as their main entryway.
  • One of the terminal entries in the security office mentions officers Calhoun and Freeman, and how they crawled through vents to access a locked room. This is a reference to Barney Calhoun and Gordon Freeman from Half-Life series, with Alyx Vance mentioning in Half-Life 2: Episode One how Barney and Gordon (the player) used to race who could unlock a colleague's office without keys faster (usually by crawling through air ducts).
  • Like with the concept for Concord Steakhouse, the idea for rewarding players with Nuka-Cade tickets (and the reason for their presence) came to be in 2019 or 2020.

Park Street Station

  • This was the very first location I ever created. I figured I should start small while I learn the ropes, and thus I chose this place; I got the idea for it years ago.
  • Park Street Church is a real location in Boston Common, though it's larger in real world.
  • Although the note found here is torn in-game, the full text exists. It reads as follows:
    To anyone who reads this:

There's nothing more we can do for these people, or you.

We heard the military is still running the Mass Bay Medical Center, so that's where
we're headed. If you need help, I suggest you do the same.

    -Rev. Wilburg
  • If you use a jet pack to fly through the hole in the ceiling above the entrance, you can find two hidden ammo boxes.

Weston Road Rest Stop

  • This location gets it's name from the real world Weston Road, which matches the road just outside the rest stop (though it's never named in-game).
  • I initially planned the location to be a hidden research facility, but it felt a bit cliché so I opted for something far less predictable. The final idea was inspired by the various Chinese hideouts in Fallout 3 (particularly Mama Dolce's).
  • Every name mentioned within the bunker is a pseudonym derived from Chinese mythology. The bunker is codenamed "Shangdu", which is a ruined city better known as Xanadu in the west.
  • At one point I planned to include a terminal entry in the CO's terminal that describes him punishing one of the agents for possessing comic books, calling it "decadent Western literature". The player could find a stash of ruined comic books named "Decadent Western Prose" in the lower level. Due to the large amount of text already present, I decided to leave it out.
