You should probably stick this comment so people understand how recommended the mod is, @AtomicTEM.

Er, the description, and Atomic's answer to my query, which predates both your posts, opines only modern (post-2006) rigs will likely see benefit. I only updated my rig to post-2006 hardware last year. I'm sure there's others, not least in poor countries, who may still be on old gear. Some will be Win7 (or XP!) - in my case it's because I'm into retro gaming, but newsflash - FO3 is an XP era game.

That's why I was trying to dig down into what sort of system you'd need before you see any real benefit. So please, no more "all users" unless you know for certain doing this will be of real notable benefit to such older rigs and OSes - for playing this old game.

Hey Atomic, how much bigger are files without zlib? And what are you calling "modern" - anything 64bit & ssd or something more specific?

About double, they're size, so an extra 1.5GB total.

Modern Systems, as in anything post-2006, since the only reason zlib was used the first place was because of file size.

Phew! Last year I updated to the fancy i7-3770 ivy bridge (2012), but before that I had a core2duo (2006). Thanks for the quick reply.

P.S technically this does benefit "all"/99.9% of systems even those that predate 2006, since the compression was used to decrease file size. Now depending on the Hard Drive compression can benefit performance (Source : https://www.afkmods.com/index.php?/topic/4280-update-bsas-and-you/), but 99% of HDD are 7200rpm so its always better to decompress the BSAs.

Hey I know this is a longshot, But I'm trying to install this while on linux... at the moment ive got an issue where the installer is just white outside the text input boxes. Can anyone send me a screenshot of what the window should look like so i dont have to play russian roulette with my BSA files?

Is FO3 BSA Decompressor meant to create a Fallout.ini in the root of the drive on which Fallout 3 is installed and is it safe to delete?

No it doesn't create a Fallout.ini file. The Fallout.ini is created when first launching the game.

I wasn't referring to the FALLOUT.INI located in %USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Fallout3FO3 BSA Decompressor is creating a Fallout.ini in the root of my E:\ drive. The Fallout.ini created by FO3 BSA Decompressor only contains the following:[Archive]
      SArchiveList=Fallout - Invalidation.bsa, Fallout - Textures.bsa, Fallout - Textures2.bsa, Fallout - Meshes.bsa, Fallout - Voices1.bsa, Fallout - Sound.bsa, Fallout - Misc.bsa

So, is BSA Redirection [Fallout].ini not needed then?

Similar to how in real life particles with large surface area react faster

Heya, maybe someone can help me. I'm having an issue where if I try using this it will cause trying to load a save game to freeze.

I'm using the English GOG version of Fallout 3 (so my Fallout 3 is not located in either Program Files directory). Originally I was only using the Anniversary Patch + FOSE + NVAC, but it was freezing. So I thought I would try it on it's own (vanilla FO3 install) but I'm still getting a freeze when trying to load a save.

I even tried moving my Fallout 3 folder (fresh install) onto my Desktop and running the program there + moving it back. I'm still getting a freeze. Any solutions (or maybe I'm doing it wrong? I'm pointing it to my Fallout 3 directory as the program asks)

Are you using MADfilter to solve the radio stutters?  I've found that it causes freezes on modern systems.

    Heddo!.
If I have my game in Program Files, can I just simply move the folder to another site like the desktop, inside a folder or I've to reinstall the game?

Hello friend, should the decompressor be used only once or should I use it every time I install a new mod?

You only need to use it once as it only affects vanilla BSAs.

It said installation worked, but I don't notice any performance improvement at all. Is there something specific I should be aware of?

Is this better than the WAV patcher? And does it work with the ESM patcher/is the ESM patcher needed?

UUFOP instructions mention these other things but not this one, and obviously I see hairylegs222 comment so I wonder about it.

WAV converter and BSA decompressor are compatible with eachother and can be used seperate of eachother.

The ESM Patcher works with both, as it does not touch anything the WAV convertor or BSA decompressor touch.

Same goes for the WAV convertor and BSA decompressor, each does not touch the other files each touch.

I fiddled around with it a little, and I do think it helps remove a lot of the stutter, I just need a way for GNR Extended now since I feel that's almost an essential mod, I don't think any of these touch that.

So the order, afaict, is probably ESM patcher, then Wav Converter, then UUF3P, then this BSA decompresser. I'm going to have to test to compare the OGG vorbis library and skipping the Wav converter, since UUF3P has that OGG BSA option.

I'm so glad people are putting tools in for this game, I still love it. Weird thing was I do remember it being smooth way back on weaker hardware, and with more powerful modern hardware it would stutter. Now with these new tools that stutter is being removed and it's getting to a point where it's better than ever. I'm not savvy enough to understand why the ogg compression/zlib creates problems now but I could have sworn wasn't an issue back then.
