There was a small update today that updated Fallout3Launcher.exe and added its own steam_api.dll file. If your overlay doesn't work after updating, redo step 1(allow overwrite) and it will work again.
I've found a small side effect to this fix. If you use this mods steam_api.dll file, it will lock you out of using the Steam launcher to change monitor size settings or turn HDR on or off for example.
Unfortunately this breaks controller functionality. Seems like I have to unplug and replug my gamepad if I need to use the keyboard for any reason in-game (e.g., typing in my character's name, using console commands, etc.) But if you're not using a gamepad then this is perfect!
Possibly, but prior to installing your mod I would be able to simultaneously use my gamepad and keyboard. But as soon as I install your DLL files I'd have to unplug my gamepad just to be able to use the keyboard. If anything, it's probably due to technical limitations. Old game, old engine, that sorta thing.
Your mod technically works so I'm endorsing this even though I can't really use it lol.
I have Command Extender v22.0 and FOSE v1.3 b2 installed. I have the latest Fallout 3 GOTY version, but "downgraded" using Fallout Anniversary Patcher v1.1. I'm running the game via Fallout3.exe because for some reason fose_loader.exe fails to load the game and spits out an error. Links to a couple of PasteBin logs:
Basically what I need to do is disconnect my gamepad BEFORE running the game and then re-connect it once I'm in. It seems like doing this tricks the game to allowing both KB/M and gamepad to work together. I didn't have to do this beforehand prior to installing the DLLs, but for some reason this is the only way to get Steam Overlay to work on my setup. It's a minor sacrifice that I'm willing to deal with lol.
UPDATE: Okay, so after some hours of playtesting the only major issue I'm noticing is that I can't place map markers on my Pipboy. So if I want to be able to do that I essentially have to choose between a) unplugging my controller and using the KB/M to place a map marker, OR b) temporarily removing the DLL files from this mod just so I can place map markers while my controller is still attached. Hmm...
UPDATE 2: I did more playtests and I'm convinced the issue is actually the controller that I was originally using. I finally got a different controller to try it out and everything worked fine right out of the box, so it's all good now lol.
UPDATE 3: Actually, I spoke too soon. Even with the other controllers I've used the issue still remains, but it's inconsistent. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. I'll still use this mod because Steam Overlay is pretty much required to have my playtime recorded, but I do wish there was an actual fix though lol.
I'm having the same issue. Starting the game with a controller connected completely disables the keyboard, but starting the game with it disconnected makes it run normally. However, connecting the controller as the game is open causes it to crash.
Same issue. It doesn't break consistently, and I have a suspicion it may have something to do with the controller sticks drifting off center, but it's not easy to replicate for some reason.
