About this mod

Dark Souls 1 Lore Overhaul tries at its best to fix most localization issues the original Dark Souls had along with removing some remnants of the early script of Ds1, like in the resist curse spell, elite knight set and gold-hemmed set and it also makes things more explicit regarding the events of the lore

Dark Souls 1 "Lore Overhaul" is a mod that tries at its best to fix the many localization mistakes that can be found in the EN version of Dark Souls 1 while making the overall lore more explicit thanks to the great analysis "Lokey Lore" made on the entirety of Ds1 lore in his book called "Abyssal Archive" .

Due to the nature of this most recent update, truly the last one, you WILL need to play Dark Souls 1 without voice volume, and the reason for this is because EVERY dialogue line was changed to how it is in the original japanese along with some new things added, like for  example, Oscar now tells the player his name, something that was only  learned thanks to cut content, and with this, almost if not every localization mistake will be removed in Ds1.

Unfortunately, like Demon's Souls, Dark Souls 1 has a terrible localization quality when compared to all other Fromsoft games afterwards, especially when you compare it with Elden Ring for example, which has the best localization quality with little mistakes. So, the intent of this mod is not only to try as best as possible to convey the original JPN meaning of some things, but also fix some early-script remnants that can be found in for example, Elite Knight Set which talks about Oscar and change how you play the game by implementing these three changes which are to make what Ds1 tells with the lore more accurate:

1- The Better Bonfires Mod (Please check original mod out, its amazing for what it does)

2- Instead of using bonfires to level up, Fire Keepers are now the only way for leveling up

3- Bonfires which appeared from thin air in boss rooms of the Four Lords and Manus do not appear anymore

The reason these changes were made is because "Better Bonfires" allows bonfire warp from the start of the game, and according to the lore, you could theoretically do that since the beginning if not for the gameplay mechanic of the Lordvessel, something that ends up being confirmed with later Dark Souls games. To warp, we use the bonfire's light (light is stated to be time in Ds3 and implied in Ds1 and 2) to warp at a space that is at another point in time. Bonfires allowing level-up is only something that was made thanks to how the world of Ds1 was structured and has no lore explanation at all. But thanks to this change of warp being unlocked since the start, it would be only better to balance that by making Fire Keepers the main level-up ladies they were supposed to be just like Demon's Souls' Maiden in Black and with Ds2 and 3's Shanalotte and Shrine Fire Keeper. Lastly, Bonfires appearing out of thin air at boss arenas is just again a gameplay mechanic, bonfires need to be made at where they are according to the lore, and as a result of this, some bonfires had their locations changed to compensate for these changes, like for example, now there is a bonfire next to the tomb that leads to you the Gravelord covenant for adherents of the covenant.

Regarding now some changes to fix localization mistakes and the lore, let's use Havel as our first example. Many items in EN of Ds1 talk of "Bishop Havel", but in reality, the JPN version only talks of "priests of Havel". Similarly, in the White Seance Ring, or the "White Faith Priest Ring" according to JPN, the EN description says that this ring was entrusted to the "head bishop of the Way of White", but in JPN, it in fact claims that the ring was given to "Way of White high priests, who are apostles of the Chief God Lloyd, King Gwyn’s uncle". Talking about the Chief God, the title of "Allfather" is a localization mistake, the JPN title being "Chief God", or, the King of the Gods. In Ds1 Lore Overhaul, I decided to refer to this title instead as "God King" in order to make the term sound better.

Along with this, many think thanks to Kaathe's EN dialogue that the Age of Dark in fact began and that Dark Souls has been in a constant cycle of Age of Fire and Age of Dark, but in fact, Kaathe in his JPN dialogue only says what should have happened, aka the Age of Dark:

“So, I will tell you the truth openly. Once, at
the beginning of fire, the ancestor of you humans found a fourth soul after
the old Kings. The Dark Soul. The ancestor of you humans acquired the Dark Soul and waited for after
fire. Eventually fire goes out and only dark remains. In that case, it would be
an age of you humans, of Dark.” - Kaathe

This goes to show that all of the Dark Souls games have been in the same Age of Fire, something that this mod tries to clarify, and this also goes to show how much this mod will change your view on the lore of Ds1 if you look at the item descriptions and pay attention to dialogue.

Overall, I couldn't have done this mod without the incredible work that Lokey Lore put into his book called "Abyssal Archive", which pretty much covers everything regarding the lore of Dark Souls 1 and shows as well the localization mistakes vs the original JPN script to see what was lost. If you really love the lore of Dark Souls, I recommend you truly to go and buy Abyssal Archive, and while we may never know the true lore of Dark Souls, there is no doubt that Lokey's book is the most most complete, consistent and comprehensible account of the original game you will read.

Now, to install this mod, drag the files in "Dark Souls 1 Lore Overhaul FINAL" and place them in your Game folder, after that, its installed! I really hope you enjoy this mod that hopefully will lead you to get a much clearer view of the lore but also hopefully lead you to check out Lokey's work as well, and thank you for reading all this if you did :)
