As much as I like the idea (spiders are overrepresented and scorpions need some time in the limelight), this mod, contrary to your description's claim, isn't gonna help arachnophobes, as scorpions are also arachnids. Not only that, but between the two of them, scorpions are actually the scarier arachnids; they're agressive, they've got crustacean like pincers, their venom's far more lethal on average, and unlike spiders, who have to bite things with their stubby little mandibles to inject it, scorpions have long tails with a giant barb stinger on the end they can can sting their victims with, meaning they can far more easily inject that more lethal venom than any spider can. So, ironically, contrary to your mod description's claim, the mods not gonna help arachnophobes enjoy the game more; rather, it's gonna make it harder for them to enjoy it because it's replacing one type of arachnid with another, even scarier type of arachnid.
Not mandibles on spiders. Arachnids have chelicera. "hook" for spiders and "pincer" for scorpions are both chelicera.
But arachnophobia is mostly directed at spider. Personally, I was arachnophobic and I had no problem with scorpions. I talk in past because I vanquished my fear of spider. (I even maintain some in captivity now)
This post is old now, as I'm more focused on the Steam Workshop version of the mod, but I wanted to adress this anyway !
You are perfectly right in your claim that scorpions are Arachnids, there is no denying basic biology and species classifications. However, you are putting too much thought in this - a phobia is, after all, in nature, mostly irrationnal. People with arachnophobia aren't thinking that a scorption is classified as an arachnid : they are thinking they aren't spiders, and they don't entirely look like spiders either. As KelenkenImperator already noted : arachnophobia is mostly directed at spiders. And scorpions simply aren't spiders.
When I started this mod, it was out of a little challenge to myself with zero knowledge in UE ( "can I do it?" ), and obviously because someone in my party was actually suffering from arachnophobia. I asked her beforehand if scorpions would be okay, and she validated it. So I went with it! I can't create a new creature or add animations, i'm just not skilled enough with the tools. I also didn't want to break the feeling of the game too much since a mod has to be shared with all players. Suddenly having frozen in place pink rabbits or camels attacking you in a cave wasn't going to cut it. I thought about the ant-like giant insects, but they were kind of gross and a bit complicated to manipulate, so I ended up with the much more simple scorpions - simple animations, close in size, neutral look.
In short, I went for scorpions because A/ they were easier to use and less lore breaking, and B/ they received validation =) But I absolutely understand your point. It's logically right.
Yeah, Necro, but, uh, this mod doesn't work for me. As I am very arachnophobic, and also, although back to the argument about arachnid scorpions, entomophobic. About the only arthropods that don't scare the heck outta me are crustaceans.
i have major arachaphobia and have even been hospitalized (panic attack from the anxiety). its the looks of them. I know i am stronger and that they fear us more than we fear them, but its the looks of them. sharks don't creep me out but I know they are way dangerous. scorpions are also creepy but i don't get frozen in fear from them. Honestly, if we could control our phobias and pick and choose what triggers them then we wouldn't have them in the first place. I hope this helps to better understand.
I am more afraid of snakes than spiders. When I meet snakes in computer games, I will be terrified. So it would be great if you could replace various snake models. I'm sorry to bother you here. God bless you.
This is awesome, however spiders in the game don't bother me much personally but i'd love to see a mod that does the same with snakes, turning all snakes there is in the whole game into some other creature like scorpions as you did here.
