I thought i might try this but have very little experience with presets and how to use them and feel a bit confused. I followed your instructions to install mod, external reshade etc, was confused at the package window so ticked all boxes to install except legacy. It appears to work in the sense the interface loads with the game and FN+Home allows me to bring up the interface where i can tick all sorts of boxes for all sorts of strange effects. But the expected automatic change i assumed would run in game isnt happening, im not seeing any changes to my game at all its still Vanilla in every way. From what i gather reading these posts it should automaticallty work and apply effects?
As im quite competent modding games generally what am i doing/ have i done incorrectly? Im sure its an end user error but as i said my reshade knowledge is very limited so I would appreciate anyone's help.
A lot has changed with the ReShade update. (ReShade_Setup_4.9.1). (Unfortunately the author is making changes that are no longer compatible with older ReShades.) For example, the original DefaultPreset.ini was renamed ReShadePreset.ini in the new ReShade.
"Alien Domination exchanges the original, still empty DefaultPreset.ini with the DefaultPreset.ini that I edited and was started automatically in the old ReShade version at that time. This file was originally created for ReShade_Setup_4.5.4. and "Legacy standard effects" were not necessary."
Try this:
Option 1 Old: with the old ReShade_Setup_4.5.4 / tested! Or: with the old ReShade_Setup_4.7.0 / tested! (Don't forget "Legacy standard effects" during installation.) ReShade will start the original DefaultPreset.ini automatically. If not: open the menu with Pos1 and look for the inserted new DefaultPreset.ini in the upper selection field C: \ ... \ Alien Isolation \ DefaultPreset.ini (exe is located) Accept DefaultPreset.ini.
Option 2 New: with ReShade_Setup_4.9.1 / not tested! (Don't forget "Legacy standard effects" during installation.) ReShade tries to start the original ReShadePreset.ini automatically. Since this is still empty, open the menu with Pos1 and look for the inserted new DefaultPreset.ini in the selection field above C: \ ... \ Alien Isolation \ DefaultPreset.ini (exe is located) Accept DefaultPreset.ini. Or: rename (before exchanging the Ini file) the Alien Domination Ini file: DefaultPreset.ini in ReShadePreset.ini. So it should be reloaded automatically.
Once I understand exactly what you have said [which will take a few reads as I dont currently lol] and can apply it I will for sure let you know if it works. Maybe im just dumb though i went to Oxford so I hope not it would have been easier I think if you had listed steps like 1,2,3 to do etc. For me once I grasp a concept everything else is easy, but only once I understand the big picture but I will uninstall 1979 and reshade and start again.
First Try [Steps taken as I dont have Vanilla files backed up, so to avoid complete AI reinstall]
1) Restarted 4.9.1. Chose update over install. 2) Ticked All Packages Including Legacy at bottom of list. 3) Closed Tool. Made no changes to already installed 1979 [in AI Folder.] 4) Loaded game and following your advice opened Tool with POS1. 5) Selected DefaultPreset.ini from drop down menu and applied.
I think it might be working now, as I could see an immediate change in the planetary background screen. Its a new game and im only at the first bit with the Sevastopol Model [after luggage area] but i can clearly see it looks very different, and it looks like the 1979 style which was as it happens the one i wanted out of all the one's in tis mod.
Question: Assuming as I am that the basic Reshade is now working, all the other unticked packages in the tool are just more options for me to play with right? Because obviously most of them are unticked and unused, only a handful at the top are ticked which im guessing are everything that was required to apply the 1979 style. Some ticked items do things which break the game for example making my screen solid yellow but if you have any recommendation for which additional packages to apply that would be great.
(Google doc with photo) I installed ReShade 4.5.4 did everything, but i dont have any effects whatsoever Edit: Im dumb and i pressed the wrong .ini all the time, ur shaders looks good, but for me just a lil too dark(but i'll play on this one and not on the one that is more bright cuz i wanna do maximum scary playthrough)
I already said your links are broken. When trying to download your mediafire links:
So I downloaded 4.5.4 directly from reshade.me archives. For some god forsaken reason it tries to copy files to a temp folder in my user profile folders instead of my D:\games\Alien Isolation\ folder even when I point it directly there:
I tried in admin mode and normal mode.
So then I tried the version 4.7 but during the install it refuses to download the full list of legacy fx that you show in your .jpg file. I only end up with the basic 6 or 7 standard .fx files with the legacy files nowhere to be found:
press OK then the same exact window with the same exact .fx files and checkmarks pops up again i press OK it says successfully installed then I go to my Alien Isolation folder and this is all that is inside the shaders folder and if I run the game and I open the reshade menu and activate your preset I only have ONE fx enabled, so I know its missing all the files. I dont know wtf is wrong with the reshade repository but these two (4.5.4 and 4.7) are broken as hell.
Strange. At the moment I can't test it myself, but I suspect that some files are not loaded completely. The authors are also constantly changing something. I send an old file of mine in the optional download area. Overwrite the installed Reshade-Shader with it and try to run it again. Or testing: older ReShade_Setup_4.5.4.exe is included. Good luck.
Thanks man. I was able to install 4.5.4.exe by unchecking the fx files during setup. Then I copied your reshade-shaders to my game directory. After launching the game I had to go into the reshade settings to point and click the + button for Shaders and Textures to add paths. After reloading, all the fx showed up in the list and was able to load your presets. Only one problem now it says there were errors compiling CAS.fx. No other errors. But it still looks pretty good.
EDIT: Oh ok I dont think your preset uses CAS.fx. So that doesnt matter. Everything seems to be in order.
This mod looks great! Will it work with the latest version of ReShade (5.3.0)?
EDIT: It works perfectly fine! Although the light blooms are a bit distracting. May have to experiment. Otherwise, nice old-school feel!! Thank you for this mod! Endorsed!
i just cant find a way to download older reshade... no matter the link i manage to find, it doesnt let me dowload anything on whatever page i found myself in.

Hello Peter.
A lot has changed with the ReShade update. (ReShade_Setup_4.9.1).
(Unfortunately the author is making changes that are no longer compatible with older ReShades.)
For example, the original DefaultPreset.ini was renamed ReShadePreset.ini in the new ReShade.
"Alien Domination exchanges the original, still empty DefaultPreset.ini
with the DefaultPreset.ini that I edited and was started automatically
in the old ReShade version at that time.
This file was originally created for ReShade_Setup_4.5.4. and
"Legacy standard effects" were not necessary."
Try this:
Option 1 Old:
with the old ReShade_Setup_4.5.4 / tested!
Or:
with the old ReShade_Setup_4.7.0 / tested! (Don't forget "Legacy standard effects" during installation.)
ReShade will start the original DefaultPreset.ini automatically.
If not:
open the menu with Pos1 and look for the inserted new DefaultPreset.ini in the upper selection field
C: \ ... \ Alien Isolation \ DefaultPreset.ini (exe is located)
Accept DefaultPreset.ini.
Option 2 New:
with ReShade_Setup_4.9.1 / not tested!
(Don't forget "Legacy standard effects" during installation.)
ReShade tries to start the original ReShadePreset.ini automatically.
Since this is still empty, open the menu with Pos1
and look for the inserted new DefaultPreset.ini in the selection field above
C: \ ... \ Alien Isolation \ DefaultPreset.ini (exe is located)
Accept DefaultPreset.ini.
Or:
rename (before exchanging the Ini file) the Alien Domination Ini file:
DefaultPreset.ini in ReShadePreset.ini.
So it should be reloaded automatically.
Does it work?
Have fun!
C.
