hey, man. i had some tips, if you're interested: crossbows were originally made to be used against armor. they are meant to pierce rather than open flesh like arrows, mainly due to the bolt's sharp and thin tip (good for piercing armor but bad to make cut large enough on the flesh) rather than the arrow's wider head (which can make much larger, devastating cuts on flesh and make it easier to hit veins and arteries, but barely any good against a steel sheet). this said, i would say that it would make more since to buff the dmg a little bit less that what you did and instead give them more armor piercing capabilities than the vanilla version. im not saying you didnt make them more realistic, cuz you did. but i think this could be done in a better way.

ether way, i hope you keep making mods and shooting those damn vampires in the nards
    have a good one

Thanks for making a more realistic crossbow. People either forget or never realized how deadly they are. Many states outlaw or strongly control crossbows while assault rifles are still easy to get in comparison.

As to the mod, you forgot about the "enhanced" crossbow. You can temper the regular crossbow with two ingots of corundum to get the enhanced crossbow... which is now less powerful.

If you are looking (in the future) at other crossbows to modify the stats on, I'd suggest starting here:
    http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/23876/?

That's a mod that adds crossbows based on each kind of smithing to make it like bows. I normally use that mod on my games. Nothing beats a dragonbone crossbow for putting down stuff the way a crossbow should.

I'd also suggest not going crazy on how much more damage tempering does. I've seen mods for like a special iron sword where the tempered version does more damage than a regular dragonbone sword. You should get a small, but noticeable increase, not something that replaces dragonbone.

Yes i agree with you; alot of people underestimate the power of a crossbow IRL.

You are right. I was thinking about also altering the data for the enhanced crossbow but i didn't do so, which is kind of stupid of me as the standard crossbow is now stronger than the enhanced crossbow when using my mod; which is a bit daft. I guess this mod is only helpful to those that haven't decided to temper their crossbows then right!?

I may make an update in the future for all crossbows in general, as well as modded ones but for now you simply have a stronger, standard crossbow. I will also ensure that it doesn't replace the dragonbone weapons, as that would make them overpowered; which is not what i want.

Thanks for leaving me constructive feedback and help, and I hope you enjoy your new altered, standard crossbow if you decide to use my mod!

Oh, I enjoy it quite well. I like playing an archer, and particularly using the crossbow, but it was always a pain grinding up the skill level to where the crossbow finally did the damage it should have all along. To use one of your own examples, killing a "simple" bear. Leaving Riften at like level eight, I ran into that bear just north west of town. I shot the damn thing six times with an enhanced crossbow and it STILL managed to kill me in Elven armor. Seriously, IRL a bear would take perhaps three bolts if you were a bad shot. Most experienced hunters can take down a bear in a single bolt. Hell, modern BOWS can usually take a bear in a single arrow, but we aren't dealing with a compound bow mod here.

I do also have a couple compound bow mods off the nexus I use when I feel like using a good bow, but I really prefer a nice crossbow. It's like having a good rifle, but lore friendly. And yes, I occasionally use that modern arms mod too... when I feel like running around spraying everything with bullets and laughing maniacally.

I believe crossbows in this one would be more appropriate: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/43517/?

Also, by how much did the weight and the damage got increased? Do you have precise numbers? I'm asking so I can alter the Lustmord crossbow from the Lustmord armor accordingly.

I'll have to try that, but it looks identical to the one I linked other than the fact that the one I linked gives you the option of altering the leveled lists or not. I don't see anything else different in the description.

Your mod only adds these crossbow types: Daedric, Dragonbone, Glass, Ebony, Orcish and Elven.

The one I linked adds the following: Daedric, Dragonbone, Ebony, Elven, Glass, Iron, Nordic, Nightingale, Orcish, and Stalhrim.

Not only that, but it also allows any crossbow and bolt type to be forged anywhere, complete with their prerequisites (perks and the Stalhrim quest, for example). The vanilla crossbow you get by first meeting Isran is made into the Steel version and if you join the Dawnguard, you only need to do one phase to be able to enhance any Xbow.

Ah, so it has a few more types. The one I linked lets you forge any crossbow and bolt anywhere as well (assuming you have the right perk - glass for the glass bow and bolt, e.g.), so that's not any different. Sounds like it's mainly tweeks, but tweeks can often mean the difference between a good mod and a GREAT one. I'll have to try it for certain. Thanks for posting about it.

Does it affect crossbows added by mods?

I'd like to know this too since I use both the Dread Crossbow & Daedric Crossbow, both of which can be found here on Nexus.

      Sadly, no not currently.

This mod simply changes the data of the Steel crossbow, meaning that the Dwarven crossbow is not changed whatsoever.

But, in the future I may decide to release another mod which alters the data of the Dwarven, the Dread and the Daedric crossbow from previous mods, but i put this mod together as I prefer the standard crossbow, so if your lucky I may release another mod which alters all crossbows.

If I may suggest, instead of changing the damage of each crossbow individually, how about just adding a script that increases the damage of any weapon that fits into the crossbow category? That would add compatibility to any mods, including the one I use (An NPO Module - Crossbows http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/43517/? )

P.S.: I included the link of the mod I use because it also adds crossbows to leveled lists, so, if you had to choose to support only individual mods, I think this would be a good one, as it adds crossbows to enemies as well, meaning that increasing their damage wouldn't unbalance the game.

      Thats actually a great idea.

Not sure if i will be produce a new update for this mod like i said, but it is something that could be done. You will just have to wait and see!

I don't know if this is possible, but if you could make kill zones on an NPC, that is what would really make this mod great. Like if you shoot a person in the head, armored or not, he would instantly die. Also, you underestimate animals, it should take 2 or 3 shots to kill any big animal that has seen you, such as deer and bears

Actually I can bring down a "real" elk or bear with a single well placed shot using a 65lb traditional long bow. Albeit I usually take my shot at 25 yards or less.

As for kill zones I totally agree with you on that. That said, this bears some looking in to.

It may be possible, but right now my plans are going to be on mods that don't relate ajustments to crossbows. I put this together as i just thought the standard Crossbow just doesn't wield enough damage to enemies.

FOX_HOUND has left a link which may be useful, but I haven't checked personally, but i hope it helps.

we've got a real hunter here. Nice!

But yes, im glad you agree with me as the damage output from the standard crossbow simply did not fit my needs.

I don't know for sure, the damage on a steel crossbow previously was around 19 damage, and i simply changed this to around 40; doubling the damage output.
