===============================================================
1. What's new in version 3.1?
===============================================================
3.1 fixes a very nasty savegame bloat issue, which occurred for several people when leveling up after completing the quest.
I URGENTLY recommend to upgrade!
THANKS AND CREDITS TO CaptainJ03! He spent hour after hour patiently in helping me to fix the probably worst bug ever to be found in this mod.
The downside of it: I had to remove the previously added "Summon Blade of the Haunted" spell. So you can actually lose the blade, like any other weapon. It can also be picked up again and wielded by hostile NPCs now, so take care.

What else?
- I've finally added a scripted NMM installer, which means that the NMM download button is available at last. NMM doesn't like OBMM-ready archives, so the OBMM version has been separated from the combined NMM/BAIN version. Both files can be downloaded individually.
- There are two new ini options to toggle the recharging screen messages and sound notifications. Check the description inside BladeOfTheHaunted.ini for details. This replaces the former optional patches ("patch 1" and "patch 2"), which have been removed.

As always, a clean save is NOT required. Just note that the "Summon Blade of the Haunted" spell (should you already have it) will be removed automatically after upgrading.

Find the full list of changes in the changelog in section 13.

===============================================================
2. Requirements

===============================================================
3. What's this mod about?
===============================================================
Watch the trailer on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=va1MUB_4C88
This mod contains REAL voice acting for the main characters and some (optional) ingame video clips!
Translations are available in Japanese, German, Russion and Chinese (find more details on the TESNexus page).

There's a detailed walkthrough guide for download on the TESNexus page, and also for online reading at http://www.chatbreak.de/oblivion/both/walkthrough/index.htm

In this quest you will pick up the trail of an old legend from the Ayleid times of the 1st Era - a legend nowadays known only as a fairy-tale, a children's bedtime story called "Aaro and Dundellon". Follow the footsteps of this legend and prove yourself worthy, and you will gain a long-forgotten powerful sword, the so-called "Blade of the Haunted".

This mod isn't easy to play (at least I think so)! It does not always work along the standard mechanisms. Instead, it demands some decent experience in playing Oblivion, as well as some fun in meeting unusual challenges! Simply finding that sword won't be the solution! You will face a completely unexpected threat that needs to be overcome. Will you be able to defeat an ancient curse that has been lurking behind that old legend? Can you play the necessary role to escape from that evil trap?

The whole plot should take you at least 3-5 hours of gameplay, depending on your style of playing.
The sword itself provides some powerful abilities that go beyond usual magic weapons, so it should be a satisfying reward for the pain (apart from the fun of playing the quest, of course).
In addition, an optional "Customizing" feature will allow you to modify the sword's attributes from within the game once you've found it in oder to adjust it to you needs. You will also be able to switch between one-hand mode (lighter & faster, but weaker) and two-hand mode (heavier & stringer, but slower).

Keeping in mind "immersiveness", I tried to respect *some design principles* to make the quest more challenging and entertaining:

- You should have some fun in reading books, which means actually *reading* them (not just opening them and then waiting for some window message to explain everything to you).
- There are no map markers. Any location can be found by reading books, talking etc.
- Journal entrys will never tell you what you are *expected* to do! Instead, they only summarize what you have learned by yourself (always consider the journal to be your diary, not a "quest guide"!).
- I tried to make very spare use of "quest items" (i.e. items that can't be dropped). So nearly everything can be dropped, sold, eaten (or whatever). Always be careful about what to give away! Note that since version 3.0, you can toggle on quest items with an ini option, which will protect you from accidentally losing anything.

In some situations during this quest, you won't be able to sleep properly! This is intention and part of the story.
Be aware that, unless you solve this puzzle, you might temporarily be unable e.g.

- to level up,
- to become a vampire (if intended)
- or to play any other quest that needs sleep mode for triggering certain actions!

Please also be aware of the conflict with mods like See You Sleep [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/16005] described below. It may be necessary to temporarily disable such mods to solve the quest.

But in the end, everything will continue as before.
Also be aware that you *have* to go to sleep to proceed. If you are one of those "no-levelling-at-all" players, don't worry: Sleeping at that specific time will suppress uplevelling.

I recommend playing with a medium-levelled character (level 10-15), though lower and higher levels should work as well. Keep in mind that the "reward" (i.e. the blade) will level up together with you afterwards, so it doesn't matter at which time you complete the quest. Only when playing with Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO), you should consider starting at a higher level (note the special warning in section 6 below!).

===============================================================
4. How to start the Quest?
===============================================================
Let's keep it "immersive"! Just imagine that you have become a little tired of stupid dungeon-exploring and adventuring lately, so you are currently hanging around in Cheydinhal, enjoying some leisure time and searching for new inspiration.
Just last night you have decided that it might be an awesome idea to read a good book (yes, you are one of those adventurers of the intellectual sort)! Let's imagine that you are especially interested in old legends.
Here we are. Now start role-playing...

===============================================================
5. Special features
===============================================================
The sword sheath of the Blade of the Haunted comes in two alternative versions:
1.) The default silver one (based on the Silver Longsword from Adonnay's Classic Sword Replacer mod)
2.) A more gloomy and evil-looking version (based on the vanilla Ebony sheath, but slightly retextured)
The installation section below explains how to pick the desired version.

Furthermore, after completing the quest, you will receive two new Lesser Powers:
1.) A "Blade Customizer" spell
2.) A "Summon" spell

The Blade Customizer brings up an ingame menu that allows you to modify the sword's attributes:
- "Wield Mode" (one-hand or two-hand)
- Damage
- Maximum number of enchantment uses
- Weapon reach
- Weapon speed
- Recharge intensity (which affects the recharging speed)

The Blade Customizer can be toggled on and off in the ini file:
- set BoT.useCustomizer to 1; this enables customizing
- set BoT.useCustomizer to 0; this disables customizing
Deactivating the Customizer will only remove the spell, but not the existing modifications.

The Summon spell brings the sword back into your hand whenever it should get lost (e.g. by falling through the floor after being disarmed during combat).
Take care to always use this spell as closely as possible after losing the sword!
If you waiting too long, for instance by leaving the cell where it was lost, or by quitting and restarting the game, the spell might become useless!

===============================================================
6. Incompatibilities
===============================================================
Here's a list of know interferences with other mods.
Most of these conflicts can be handled by regarding the instructions!

1. Be careful with Companion mods (like CM [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/7819] or others)!
In some parts of the quest, you will be automatically teleported via script. Having companions following you might cause confusion. They won't actually break the quest, but as part of the story takes place inside your character's dreams, having companions automatically following you would appear quite stupid. In addition, I am not 100% sure whether companions can even get lost when following you, so take extreme care!!!
I recommend that after finding the blade for the first time (which is in the middle of the quest), you should always tell your companions to stay and wait behind before going to sleep (no more details here in order to avoid spoilers). After waking up, they may follow you again without causing issues.

2. Sleep mode collision
Do not start/play this quest in parallel with other mods that use sleep mode (such as The Lost Sword of the Ayleids [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/20184], Tears of the Fiend [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/11598] etc.). If you have already completed such quests, there shouldn't be any problem.
Also note the possible temporary conflicts with vampirism and uplevelling, as stated above.
In addition, there is a conflict with See You Sleep [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/16005], which makes the "sleeping" part of this quest impossible to solve! Details are given in the walkthrough guide.
In case of any doubts you should consider temporarily disabling these mods and reactivating them after completing my quest.

3. The "single arrow effect"
The quest includes some heavy scripting for automatically removing and restoring all of your inventory items. This may lead to one specific, sporadical, but uncritical effect: If you should suddenly find yourself with only one single arrow equipped instead of all that you had in your quiver, don't panic! The arrows are not actually lost, but only separated in your inventory. It's a general scripting issue also known from other mods (like Super Hotkeys [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/22326], for example). If you run into this problem, just reequip your arrows, and your quiver will be complete again.

4. Not a bug, just a warning for all OOO users
If you are running Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul (OOO), the difficulty of this quest may be somewhat harder, so you should consider starting at a higher level (above 20). This is because one specific dungeon, which you must explore, is populated by OOO with some very powerful foes! Though I guess that most OOO users are used to facing tough threats, I'd still like to warn you!

5. Curse of Hircine - Resurrected (CoHR):
This mod is incompatible with CoHR prior to version 412. Any version of CoHR from 412 or higher is fine. Please ensure that you're using the latest version of CoHR (http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/35118).

6. Adense Epic Dungeon
This mod adds a prominent portal right in front of Nadara's house. Though it may look irritating, it doesn't harm my quest in any way, so please don't be surprised.
However, if you are using Unique Landscapes and the UL Imperial Isle patch, this can cause slight pathgrid issues. For now I recommend to temporary disable at least the UL Imperial Isle patch while playing this mod.

7. Oblivion Magic Extender (OBME)
It has been reported that this mod (http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/31981) interferes with mine whenever one is entering the nightmare world.
See this post for details: http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1108849-relz-the-blade-of-the-haunted-a-sword-quest/page__view__findpost__p__22025978.
I haven't found the time so far to create a patch, and cannot promise to do so quickly.
For now I recommend to disable OBME only as long as you are playing the nightmare parts of my quest. That should bypass any problems.

8. "Basic/Primary Needs" mods
This is similar to 2. (above): Such mods usually require your character to sleep at regular intervals in order to regain Fatigue and other physical attributes. So they'll likely collide with my quest as long you are visiting the nightmares.
My recommendation is to turn these mods off before going to sleep until you've completed the quest.

9. Yakumo Isle - HotSpring and LittleHome
This mod (http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/37004 places a column right through Nadara's house. Does no harm though (isn't quest-breaking), but looks a bit ugly.

===============================================================
7. Installation
===============================================================
Installation files:
---------------------------
1.) BladeOfTheHaunted_.7z: This is the main archive
2.) BladeOfTheHaunted_-Videos.7z: Contains the optional ingame cutscenes.

Both archives are fully BAIN, OMOD and NMM-ready, but can also installed manually (not recommended).

The main archive provides installer wizards for BAIN, OBMM and NMM. I recommend to use them, they make installation failsafe and easy-to-go.
The additional ingame video clips are optional, but the only good reason not to install them is if you should mind about the additional of disk space usage (about 60mb).

Choosing a sheath meshes:
---------------------------
- By default, the silver mesh is installed.
- The dark mesh can most easily be installed by using the installer wizard (you will be prompted for it). Or, in BAIN, manually tick the "02 Dark Sheath" option.
- Choosing the desired sheath version during manual installation is described further below

Import Factions from this mod into your Bashed Patch!
This mod adds new factions to vanilla NPCs. If you are using Wrye Bash for creating a so-called "Bashed Patch", you need to rebuild that patch after installation, with the "Import Factions" option checked for this mod.

Configuration Files
---------------------------
There are two configuration files included. You'll find them under the Data\Ini directory (BladeOfTheHaunted.ini).:
1.) BladeOfTheHaunted.ini
- BoT.currentVersion (NEVER touch this!),
- BoT.logLevel (doesn't need to be changed unless you are facing problems),
- BoT.useCustomizer (use this to toggle the Blade Customizer on or off, as described above)
- BoT.useQuestItems (use this to toggle the usage of quest item flags on or off, as described above)
- BoT.noRechargeMsgs: set this to 1 to suppress "Blade is recharging..." screen messages
- BoT.noRechargeSound: set this to 1 to suppress the "ping" sound when recharge is complete

The installation wizards for OBMM and BAIN will prompt you for some of the above settings (not for all of them!) during installation.
Any other adjustments (especially when installing with NMM or manually) have to be applied manually to the ini file.

2.) BladeOfTheHaunted - compatibility.ini
NEVER TOUCH THIS FILE unless advised to do so by me!
It is meant for troubleshooting, because it allows to handle possible mod conflicts without having to modify the esp file itself.
As long as you are not having any issues, just ignore the file (and leave it in place, untouched).

BAIN, OBMM or NMM Installation
---------------------------
These aren't explained here any further, because they work according to the well-known mechanisms of these tools. BAIN, OBMM and NMM users will find it self-explaining.

Manual Installation
---------------------------
1) Open this archive with 7zip or WinZip and examine the folder structure.
2) Copy all files from the "00 Core" subdirectory" into Oblivion's data folder
3) If you are using Better Music System, copy teh alternative BladeOfTheHaunted.esp from the subfolder "02 BetterMusicSystem compatibility" to the data folder (confirm to overwrite the existing file)
4) If you want to use the darkened sword sheath, manually copy the files from "02 Dark Sheath" to your data folder (confirm to overwrite any existing files/folders)
5) If desired, modify the settings in data\ini\BladeOfTheHaunted.ini as descibed above. Leave the other ini file (BladeOfTheHaunted - compatibility.ini) untouched!
6) Start Oblivion Launcher, click Data Files, and enable "BladeOfTheHaunted.esp".

Adjusting load order
---------------------------
This mod has been added to the masterlist for BOSS (Better Oblivion Sorting Software, see http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/20516).
I therefore strongly recommend using BOSS. It will place the esp into the best position automatically.
If you don't use BOSS, make sure that the esp is placed as close as possible to the end of your load order, but before your Bashed Patch:
- [...]
- BladeOfTheHaunted.esp
- [...]
- Bashed Patch

===============================================================
8. Uninstallation
===============================================================

BAIN, OBMM and NMM Installation
---------------------------
These aren't explained here any further, because they work according to the well-known mechanisms of these tools. BAIN, OBMM and NMM users will find it self-explaining.

Manual Uninstall
---------------------------
Delete all the files copied during manual installation (see above). If you're in doubt, open the 7zip archives and examine their contents.

===============================================================
9. Ressources and Credits
===============================================================
I've reused several excellent resources from other modders.
I have read their readmes thoroughly to ensure that they permit reuse of their work. If I should have misunderstood anything, please contact me:

- Classic Sword Replacers [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/11451] by Von Django resp. Adonnay: The Blade of the Haunted is actually a retexture of Adonnay's Silver Longsword, which Von Django packed into his mod.
- Dalls Creatures [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/14532]: Dundellon's Nightmare is a slightly darkened retexture of Dall's Wraith
- Tigerpaws' Oblivion Shader Visual Resources [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/33399]
- Qarl's Webs (extracted from Tamriel Resource Pack [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/24822])
- Clintmich's Dragon Pics from his Dragon Paintings and Pictures Modders Resource [http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/31538] (I have hidden 3 of his lovely dragons inside my quest. Let's see if you can find them!)

===============================================================
11. Licensing/Legal
===============================================================
Please don't use content of this mod without my permission. I don't want to "interdict" any reuse, of course (which would be quite stupid, as I have used other modders' work, too). I just want to know where and for what my mod gets reused. So please send me a message if you plan to do so. If I shouldn't respond within 3 weeks, feel free to do whatever you like with my material.
This doesn't cover any 3rd persons' work listed in the credits section above. Read and decide for yourself whether you are permitted to use it.
I am not responsible for any damage that this mod might cause to your savegames, hardware or whatever. Neither am I responsible for sleepless nights (I have to fight them enough for myself, since have entered Tamriel for the first time).

===============================================================
12. Feedback and contact
===============================================================
Feel free to send your feedback to jaime74 here on TESNexus. Add posts and rate my mod.
I am not a native english speaker, so there might still be some flaws in the books and dialogues in this quest. Any helpful feedback will be highly appreciated!

===============================================================
13. Changelog
===============================================================
Version 3.1, 2013/08/30
- Fixed savegame bloat issue (thanks to CaptainJ03)!
- Removed the "Summon Blade of the Haunted" spell. Also the blade is now wieldable again by everyone, not only by the player.
- Added two additional ini options for toggling recharching screen messages and sound notifications. This replaces the former optional patches ("patch 1" and "patch 2").
- Added scripted NMM installer. NMM/BAIN version and OBMM version are now separate download files.
- Added more notes about incompatibilties.

Version 3.0, 2011/10/18
- Added alternative sheath (darker, more gloomy and evil-looking). It is choosable via installer wizard in OBMM/BAIN, or by manual installation. I consider it much prettier than the default one!
- Added new summon spell that brings back your blade if it should get lost (e.g. by falling through the floor after being disarmed during combat)
- You can now toggle quest items on or off with a new ini option (choosable via installer wizard in OBMM/BAIN, or manually in the ini file):
It is OFF by default. With this option turned ON, several items will be turned to real "quest items" so that they cannot be dropped or sold anymore by accident.
This is generally considered easier to play, but at the same time less immersive.
No matter what choice you make, all the quest items will be turned back into normal items automatically after finishing the quest.
- Opening the book "Aaro and Dundellon" will play Alysmera's Music Theme
- Lowered some disposition limits for crucial dialoguetopics. They had been reported repeatedly to be way too high.
- The final blade cannot be wielded anymore by others (it refuses to be touched by anyone but its rightful bearer)
- Added a second ini file (BladeOfTheHaunted - compatibility.ini)
DO NOT TOUCH IT! You shouldn't have to do anything with it, unless you are facing mod conflicts and are advised by me to edit it.
- Simplification of the folder structure and the installation wizards
- Various minor visual cleanups
- Significantly cleaned up this readme to make it more user-friendly (finally - it has been quite a mess!)
- Updated the Walkthrough Guide (english version only) to the latest version (it has been slightly outdated)

Version "2.6a", 2011/06/14:
- Patch of the BAIN wizard, fixing an issue that occurred after upgrading to Wrye Bash 292

Version 2.6, 2011/02/19:
- Added real voiceovers for the main characters
- Separated movie clips from the main file to ease download and updates, adjusted installation scripts accordingly
- Several minor fixes
- Enhancement of installation scripts to improve detection of required files when they're ghosted

Version 2.5, 2011/02/05:
- Revamped the dream world by giving it some lightning, thus increasing its gloomyness and horror-style (thanks to wverdin for the inspiration!)
- Added two atmospheric movie clips to the dream world sequence. I am sure you'll enjoy them! They're worth checking out even for players who have already completed the quest!
- Be aware that the new version is approx. 50 MB bigger in size due to the freshly added movies!
- If you don't like the additional 50 MB, you can savely remove them (the mod will ignore this and simply won't play them). Just delete the Data\Video\BladeOfTheHaunted folder after installation.
- The following recently uploaded patches have become obsolete with this new version (please don't use them anymore):
- "Troubleshooting Patch"
- Compatibility Patch for "Curse of Hircine Resurrected" (thanks to LogicDragon for modifying his mod to solve the conflict!)
- BAIN installation now requires Wrye Bash 291 or higher!
- Several cleanups and optimizations:
- reengineered handling of sleep mode to reduce the risk of mod conflicts (thanks again to LogicDragon for his helpful hints!)
- ini file moved under sudirectory "ini" (which is a far better style)
- removed dummy textures, which were only necessary for Wrye Bash 290 or lower

Version 2.4, 2011/01/25:
- Requirements: Minimum OBSE version changed from 18 to 19
- Extended logging functions for troubleshooting

Version 2.3, 2010/12/27:
- now ready for both BAIN and OBMM installation (directory structure changed accordingly, added a wizard.txt for script-based installation with BAIN).
- removed all static resources (except for the voice files) and replaced them by a single bsa archive
- minor script extensions for enhanced automatic cleanup of variables, in order to reduce savegame space

Version 2.2.1, 2010/09/21:
This is mainly a bugfix release.
IT IS STRONGLY RECOMMENDED TO UPGRADE TO THIS VERSION, EVEN IF YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE QUEST!
- fixed a FormID bug that could cause some vanilla activators to malfunction (thanks to Vorians for finding it!)
- completely removed the UL Imperial Isle patch by optimizing Old Nadara's House exteriors (thanks again to Vorians)
- fixed a script bug that made Dundellon's Nightmare accidentally vulnerable to low-level characters (thanks to Nichi for finding this!)
- several enhancements/beautifications to Old Nadara's cottage: The interior matches the exterior finally, and she also has some animals and plants now to earn her living
- several minor cleanups to the esp

[Any older versions than 2.2.1 are not supported anymore. They've been removed from the download section and the changelog.]

===============================================================
14. Troubleshooting
===============================================================
If you are having problems with this mod that cannot be solved by reading and regarding everything (check below!), you can switch on extended logging to provide me log files, so that I can analyze what's going on.
Such issues might be, for instance:
- trouble when trying to sleep to get into the dream world after finding the "Ghostly Blade" (crashes, unable to sleep at all, ...)
- trouble getting out of that dream world again (crashes, nothing happens, ...)
- when the blade doesn't follow you into dream, though you believe that you did everything necessary so that it should do so
- ...
Switching on extended logging also requires installing another mod called ConScribe (see below).

When should I use this?
---------------------------
PLEASE(!), before sending me any PMs or posts with questions, ensure first that you've followed 5 simple steps:

1.) You've thoroughly read and fulfilled the requirements (section 2).
2.) You've thoroughly read and followed the installation instructions (section 7).
3.) You've thoroughly read the relevant parts of the walkthrough guide (section 3)
4.) You are using the correct OBSE version (once again, just to be sure: section 2!).
5.) You are using the latest version of this mod.

If you can answer all of the above questions with "yes", then do as follows...

1.) Install *Conscribe* (download from http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/search.php)!
2.) Verify that Conscribe is properly installed by entering the game and playing around a little bit. Then exit and check if the following 2 files are present on your PC:
\Data\ConScribe Logs\Static Log.log
\Data\ConScribe Logs\Per-Mod\BladeOfTheHaunted.log
3.) Open Data\ini\BladeOfTheHaunted.ini and change the parameter BoT.logLevel to 3 (this is vital!!).
4.) Enter the game and try to reproduce the error/crash you are struggling with.
5.) Exit the game (if id did not already crash).
6.) Send me a PM on TESNexus (jaime74), explaining what exactly you have done and what you think does not work as expected.
Include both log files in the PM (surround the with [code][/code] or [quote][/quote] tags).

15. About the author
===============================================================
I have no other user accounts anywhere with the name jaime74, except for the TES CS Wiki and jaime74tube on youtube. I am from germany and living in switzerland.
All these accounts are only and exclusively related to my TES modding activities. That means, if you should find anybody else with that name on google, it is not me. I am telling this because I found out that the nickname jaime74 is quite frequent out there. I even stumbled over someone with that name who is publishing adult-content sites! So I have a strong interest in not being mixed up with anyone ;)

The jaime part of my nickname, by the way, is not my real name, but a tribute to Jaime Lannister from G.R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire (who would have thought that?).
