It's been covered below, but I wanted to compile the info here.

    0) remove any GECK currently in you Fallout 3 install folder; remove any GECK ini files (clean slate)

    1) download the geck "1.5" full (which is actually 1.1) and let it install to the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3

    2) copy  libvorbisfile.dll and vorbis.dll to this Fallout 3 folder

    3) run Geck.exe (yes, it will crash; this is okay)

    4) now copy GECK_1.5_Update.exe to this Fallout 3 folder

    5) run GECK_1.5_Update.exe; it will freak out and state that the update has failed, but BEHOLD, you now have GECK 1.5

    6) copy Geck.exe from this Fallout 3 folder to your actual Fallout 3 install folder

    7) run the GECK and confirm version 1.5; exit out; delete the Bethesda Softworks folder from C (done with this)

    8) copy Stewie's GeckPatcher.exe and Src folder to Fallout 3 install folder; run the exe and it will patch successfully

    9) run the new GECK.exe; enjoy fully optimized GECK!

EDIT: It may lock up the first time you try to edit a mod. Just let it crash. Check to see the 2 new geck inis were created in documents; load up again and it will run fine and fast.

Now that what should've been called gold. Kudos and big gratitude, stranger.
In my case helped a lot, so potential users, don't be afraid to follow this mini-instruction. Now GECK works so smoothly compared to my experiments with it back in 2010, hah

Unfortunately, this method did not end up working for me. I kept getting an "Old file does not exist" error. Thankfully, I did end up figuring it out.

      1. Download GECK 1_5 Full and run the install. Do NOT install it to C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3
      > Instead, redirect it to Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 3 goty (or your game directory)

      2. Run Geck.exe (If yours doesn't crash, just close it after it loads)

      3. Download GECK 1_5 Update and copy GECK_1.5_Update to your game directory.

      4. Run GECK_1.5_Update.exe.

      5. Download FOSE Patcher from Stewie and copy both the GeekPatcher and Src folder to your game directory.

      6. Run GeekPatcher.exe and everything should be all set.

My old instructions were based on the GOG version. Maybe it failed because you're using Steam?

I'm having an odd issue, and I do not know if it is new or always was this way:

I have this GECK, updated to 1.5, patched with FOSE, etc, etc, on Windows 10, Steam version of FO3_goty back-dated to v1703 and fully patched/fixed .. Everything works great, no crashes, etc etc,..

GECK works fine, when I load a MOD ESP. I have successfully edited a bunch of stuff, just messing about to learn the user interface.

BUT.. I decided to try to follow the Bethesda Tutorial, and create a Vault 74 ...
.. GECK opens fine, I select the Fallout3.esm, set as Active, click OK, file begins to load .. gets to 9~10 % and freezes (not responding) message displays, and GECK hangs forever ... err, 20 plus minutes until I close program out of frustration.

What might be the cause? is the FO3.esm just that big? or have I got an issue with a GECK setting?

Probably not hardware related, but I'm running a Ryzen5, 64Gb ram, 500Gb M3-SSD with an Nvidia 1050Ti 4Gb (yeah yeah, but have you seen the prices lately?)

Is there a chance to run Geck for FO3 and Geck for Fallout New Vegas on one PC at the same time ? It would be helpful to transfer a mod from FO3 to the "Tales of Two Wastelands version" for Fallout New Vegas.

OK, finally i find it by myself. There is a setting in the Ini-File :)

Turns out the 1.5 full file is actually 1.1 and still needs the update file.

My GECK has as many Unhandled Exceptions as the Fallout3VE Save Editor. LOL and quite often, depending on the resolution (or so it seems) after having crashed it won't launch again. Just sits on the Windows toolbar. I sorta thought handling exceptions was supposed to be done before compiling.

Did you run the GECK once to establish it's ini files? I just used the patch and it works, unlike the one on the GECK Wiki page...
