ODARKA??? I donno where you find this name, but it definitely not Russian. I know Bulgarian sort of wine "Kadarka", but this is quite different theme...
But other names seems to be correct, also Ukrainian names too.

Odarka is a rare Ukranian variant of Darya that found its way into the Russian namelist by mistake. It had a very low chance of coming up, but still, it didn't belong. My bad.

All Ukranian names were removed from the Russian namelist for 1.5; you still might get Ukranian names in a Russian draw, because 2% of white Russians will be derived from the Ukranian namelist, which is the official figure. But they'll be fully Ukranian first and last names, no bizarre mixes.

I believe so - I don't think they alter the same classes. I'll check though.

EDIT: They work together just fine. I recommend Nicknames Extended, too. The original mod author did a great job coming up with plausible-sounding nicknames that keep the spirit and mood of the original game.

I'm running this with the Nicknames mod too, but instead of installing that one I merely extracted the nicknames and pasted them into the relevant sections of the required .ini file. Ditto the expanded backgrounds and mission name mods. This mod is the only one among them that I actually installed rather than baked in.

Love the names though, good job.

Thank you Paulja - yes, that's definitely another way of doing it. Just be sure to save backups of any .ini files you edit, for those times that updates or DLC or reinstalls overwrite them.

That said, for the nicknames mod all that manual maintenance shouldn't be necessary, since the mods don't alter the same classes (i.e., categories of things in the game). They both add things to the localization file but neither one replaces it outright. I do it by having new names in my own file, plus a handful of INI changes to direct the game to that file - I don't try to add names to the existing localization files, or alter them otherwise in any way. Consequently it'll play seamlessly alongside all mods that don't specifically try to mess with character names or country-to-namelist assignments or race ratios. I know it installs fine with the nicknames and player backgrounds mods; not sure about the mission names mod but I can't think of a reason that'd be different.

Of the more popular mods, the main conflicts to be worried about will come with new country mods, which add stuff to the country-to-namelist assignments. Even then that's only going to be a problem if the country mod is written in an aggressively inconsiderate way.

Those Portuguese names are definitely not representative of the most common names, I can tell you that

Well, provide me with a better source of names than the Portuguese government provides, and I'll rewrite them.

Incidentally: these names are not supposed to be *classic* names, they're supposed to be *random* names.

That means, for a 14-name draw (like the kind that are used to make the screenshots for this mod, all of which I snapped on the first draw), you'll typically get at least one name you wouldn't expect more than 1 out of 14 times you held such a draw, i.e., 1-to-196 odds against or greater.

"Asdrubal", for example, is an extremely rare male first name in Portugal. But this mod is large enough to include it as a possible choice - a 1-in-3000 choice, roughly - and it happened to appear as a random selection when I took the screenshot for this mod. The odds of that particular name coming up is low...but the odds of SOME name that rare showing up are high. That's how randomness works. Same with Umbelina and Herminio; very rare names that appeared as a product of random chance.

And that's the point of the mod: to make namelists that are ACTUALLY representative, that aren't purely the most common names in a country, without making every name sound like it's whackadoodle bullsh*t. Rare names are in the mix but common first and last names are fairly and proportionately represented. So maybe you get a Herminio every once in a while but his last name is likely to be "Neves" or something fairly normal. And hey, take a look, that's what the mod actually did. Herminio Neves. Umbelina Rodrigues. Diamanta Silva.

Great mod. It's not that I don't like the other mods which add a bajillion other countries, but the fact that the voice packs are so limited will destroy immersion because they'll all sound so same-y even if you know their accents should be way different. That's why I prefer to use namelists that mostly extend from the base countries like this one. Good job by the author too, solid effort put into this. Thumbs up!

This is a fantastic mod. Thank you for spending so much time on it and lavishing so much thought and care over its creation. I love this kind alteration to the game. Wish I could endorse more than once.

    Excellent mod!

    I do have one request..
Could you separate the Norwegian and Swedish namelists?
Since they are two separate countries in the default game, it should be pretty easy to do.
(being a Swede I don't really want to be mixed with the Norwegians )

I was planning on doing this myself, but your mod is a much better option!

here are the 100 or so most common names from scb.se:
(i put them in m_arrSweXNames format in order to be as helpful as possible)

Right on. Sweden will definitely be part of the next update, along with most/all the other countries in the game without their own namelists. If I end up using your names I'll let you know and put you in the credits.

Not to fond of the Phillip as surname in german.Phillip is normale a first Name. The forname Lennox sounds strange to, maybe you could replace it with Leon? I can´t judge the other ones, but they do Sound better than Vanilla

Just wanted to give some Feedback from someone who speeks german natively.

Thank you for the kind words and helpful suggestions.

For Version 1 of the mod, name lists in Western Europe come exclusively from government census records and are not separated by race or culture. The name lists are also much, much larger than the originals and include rare names. This means that occasionally you get names in Germany that aren't quintessentially German.

By the roll of the RNG there's only a 1-in-500 chance of a German male being named Lennox in the game. Leon is already 7 times more likely. There's a 1-in-900 chance of a German male getting the last name Phillipp. Multiply those odds by the 1-in-60 chance of getting a German male in the first place and that means for a single open spot there's only a 1-in-27 million chance of getting a German named Lennox Phillipp. That's 40 times less likely than being dealt a royal flush in a single five-card draw. There are literally no rarer names in the mod for Germans. They exist because there are a small-but-significant number of Germans with names that have hereditary roots in other countries, and I didn't have the time to weed them all out before the first draft was ready to publish.

Version 2.0 will be using namelists based on ethnicity and culture rather than nation; that may not eliminate ALL the non-German names, but it'll make it more likely that you'll get them as a rare Henri Jacques or Mehmet Uyghur amongst a hundred Gerhard Richters. And it'll spare you the embarrassment of any Lennox Schultzes or Aaron Phillipps.

Hey, your names for Egypt, India, Nigeria and Israel are kinda off. Some sound pretty damn offensive. Just some friendly constructive feedback.

Sorry, but I'm working alone, and I don't speak every major language in the world. The surnames for countries without great web resources come mostly from sites such as Forebears.co.uk, and the given names come from whatever I can find.

That said, the Israeli list and the Indian list come directly from government listings of name frequency counts.

I take it you speak Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba, and Hebrew?

If you find any names offensive, send me a message and I'll remove them.

But telling me there's offensive names in a mod that adds 66,700 names without telling me which names are offensive and why is NOT very constructive and hence not very friendly either.

Unless you're trying to say that the lack of proper Arabic and East Asian naming systems is offensive, in which case you'll have to take it up with Firaxis.

Note to all: like virtually all complex mods, this is a work-in-progress. I'm studying different naming traditions around the world and trying to integrate them into the mod the best I can. The 2.0 version will do a better job of replicating the way names sound in non-European countries.

If you don't understand already, that's going to require a ton of f'n work. I've already done hours upon hours of research and it's going to take a lot more. I advise you to understand what I'm starting with and either have a little patience, or if you must complain, at least TELL ME SPECIFICALLY what you don't like.

Or better yet, put your seven-language-speaking ass to good use and post a pastebin with some improved name lists.
