An ambitious premise, and I like the stuff you've combined here. Personally, a medium sized Long War campaign would be a dream come true, as I haven't had enough time to invest on the real deal, so here's hoping you can bring this to completion. Until then, definitely gonna be giving this a spin, as the item simplification means less time agonizing in squad loadout, which is fine by me.
I keep making tweaks and changes, so check back every week or two. My goal was to emphasize perk choices on humans and to force more choices in loadouts, as well as open up the battlefield a bit by making light cover more viable. Personally my squads tend to be mostly light armor because I need those equipment slots with a few heavy armor tanks up front.
