About this mod

This simply downgrades your game back to v4.01. For people who were noticing lots of performance issues introduced in 4.02.

Permissions and credits
Changelogs
Since the release of v4.03, this mod is now NO LONGER NEEDED.
Major stuttering and FPS dips have been resolved with the new release. Some micro-stuttering is still present, but it is very tolerable compared to the stuttering seen in v4.02.

Summary:
Are you like me? Do you hate it when game devs introduce patches that are supposed to "fix" issues they introduced, only to botch things even further? If you are like me, then here you go.

Patch 4.02 introduced horrible performance on dx11, such as massive dips in FPS and major stuttering, as well as some crashing on dx12 for 4000 series card users. Unfortunately, the devs have yet to address either of these issues. This mod downgrades your game back to v4.01 by replacing the witcher3.exe before these issues ever existed. This means that you can keep your mod list how it is without changing anything, while simultaneously getting the benefits of v4.01.
Time travelling to the past is now possible, people.

Pros to installing this:

- You will not lose any progress to your saves. You will still be able to run them.
- Game runs smooth as butter again on DX11.
- No more crashes (hopefully) for 4000 series card users on DX12.
- All mods upgraded to 4.02 will still work; no need to mess with your mod list to make them compatible with 4.01 again.
- NPCs with Hairworks ON will now correctly show Hair instead of being bald as it was bugged in 4.02 (Poor Johnny).
- Until CDPR themselves fix their issues, you don't have to worry about updating to v4.03 if that ever gets released. And if they botch something there too, then this depository will still be available, if you want to downgrade back to this version again.
- Completely safe to install and safe to remove. Check Uninstallation down below.

Known Issues to installing this:

- You lose HBAO+, obviously, since that was introduced in 4.02. To fix the slider being locked to OFF follow the steps in the Installation section down below.
- SSR in water doesn't work as well. Still looks good, but loses the refraction that was introduced in 4.02.
- Motion Blur slider introduced in 4.02 on DX12 has broken functionality. You can interact with it but doesn't really do anything.
- You lose any and all other "fixes" introduced in 4.02. But who cares, right?
- Certain Lighting mods that take advantage of the visual changes fixed in 4.02 won't work well (you'll see some minor visual bugs/flickering). If you can find 4.01 files of those Lighting mods, then you're OK.

* PLEASE REPORT IF ANY OTHER ISSUES POP UP

Installation:
  • Extract the mod, then place the files in your main The Witcher 3 directory. When asked to replace files, click "yes". Boom, done.

**Important Note** Be sure to go into your Steam app, go to "The Witcher 3" game in your Library, right click, select Properties, select Updates, and change the "Automatic Update" tab to "Only update this game when I launch it". This will prevent the game from automatically updating and overwriting this mod.

Optional Steps:
  • If you want to get really kinky, you can even just install the .exe you want for the game version you want. If you want to launch only DX11 under v4.01 and keep DX12 under v4.02, then you can do that. Now you'll get to run the game under 2 different versions. Game saves made under either version will still be read by either version, so no worries there....I believe.

  • How to fix the locked SSAO slider. Even though it visually says OFF, SSAO is actually ON. But if the visual bug annoys you, then here's how to fix it:
1) Go to your The Witcher 3/bin/config/r4game/user_config_matrix/pc folder and open graphicsdx11.xml or graphics.xml.

2) Copy this line:

<Var overrideGroup="PostProcess" id="SSAOEnabled" displayName="option_ssao" displayType="TOGGLE" tags="customDisplayName;disableIfRTAO"/>

3) Ctrl + F "<!-- Screen Space Ambient Occlusion -->" in the file. You will see a group of code below the green text that looks like this:

<Var overrideGroup="PostProcess" id="SSAOEnabled" displayName="option_ssao" displayType="OPTIONS" tags="customDisplayName;customNames;disableIfRTAO;nonLocalizedExceptFirst">
<OptionsArray>
<Option id="0" displayName="panel_mainmenu_option_value_off">
<Entry overrideGroup="PostProcess" varId="SSAOEnabled" value="0"/>
</Option>
<Option id="1" displayName="SSAO">
<Entry overrideGroup="PostProcess" varId="SSAOEnabled" value="1"/>
</Option>
<Option id="2" displayName="HBAO+">
<Entry overrideGroup="PostProcess" varId="SSAOEnabled" value="2"/>
</Option>
</OptionsArray>
</Var>

4) Highlight that whole group of code from <Var ... to ...</Var>., and replace it with the new string of code you copied from 2). Save and Close.
     Now the slider will revert back to a toggle for OFF/ON.

Uninstallation:
Download the "Optional" file and replace the files in your The Witcher 3 directory when prompted to revert back to the original patched version.
