Same here, looking good. Was tempted to try True Fires but that seems way more complicated and also has no B&W support. Sticking to the OG classic for the foreseeable future.
Edit: The next gen update actually adds shadows to tons of light sources, so I think this mod is not necessary anymore.

Has anyone found a fix and/or specific settings to eliminate the issue of the shadows disappearing abruptly when you get close to them? It's driving me insane .....
For me it was too high shadow settings. I think it was this: MaxSpotShadowSize=256 and MaxCubeShadowSize=512 Try other shadows too if this doesn't solve it. Maybe it's also something else, but this helped me.
Alright so ... it was MaxCubeShadowSize .. Don't set it higher than 512 ... every other setting tweak till your hearts content .... thank god I got that figured out .. thank you scherzeking!
Why are there no textures in the game that this mod affects? The torch light source just hangs in the air, there are no bonfires in Novigrad and so on. Also, when I try to uninstall the mod, my save breaks and the Witcher just freezes when loading. What to do in this case if half of the game has already passed with this mod?
I just wanted to ask what are the settings you guys use for the shadows because my fps drops to 20 below once I'm in Novigrad. My rig's specs: CPU: AMD 3900x RAM: 16GB GPU: 2080 Super
Yah this is normal unfortunately....This mod is extremely taxing on my rig and I'm running a 1080Ti SLI. And when in Novigrad looking at certain parts of the scene, my FPS tanks as if one of my GPUs just died. It apparently disable SLI functionality in certain areas of heavy shadow locations, or even in NON shadow locations....Really bizarre and quite buggy unfortunately...
The game is poorly optimized for SLI, yes. However, what I mean is that with SLI enabled, this mod utilizes the CPU more, which ends up cutting off one of the GPUs during certain scenes where there are a lot of shadows. So it makes it feel like only 1 GPU is running, therefore, only getting half the fps intended. That's why FPS reports are all over the place. People who use only 1 GPU to begin with won't notice huge fps hits, maybe around 10 fps at most? Whereas SLI uses, like me, will notice huge hits because 1 of the GPUs actually gets deutilized during those CPU intensive shadow scenes. So instead of seeing a 10 fps hit, it would be 10 fps + the % from the second GPU, making it appear like a much bigger FPS hit than it should normally be.
In other words, this mod increases physics-based shadow rendering, which is a CPU intensive task. And since this game is poorly optimized to begin with, the mod forces the CPU intensive tasks to override SLI functionality.

Here's some comparison shots with and without the mod (SLI turned on in both screenshots, running at 1440p resolution).

As you can see, literally NOTHING is giving off any lighting or shadows anywhere in the scene, yet I lose up to 40 FPS for no flipping reason, other than the lights inside the building I'm staring at might be somehow affecting and destroying my GPUs. Unfortunately this is just too buggy to use as is, unless it gets optimized somehow.... I respect the mod author's work a lot. And I do love using this mod since it adds so much immersion, so I'll just have to get past this issue.
Your situation is very strange, I play it with several graphics mods including this one and I only lost 10 fps compared to the vanilla version and I am using a Ryzen 5 3600 and a 1660ti

shadows from torches look weird in some cases
4.04 Patch with rt shadows
