About this mod

This mod improves and upscales the textures of the guards in The Witcher.

Permissions and credits

This project is aimed at obtaining a new game experience by replacing low-quality guards textures. Even with this mod alone, the game will be very transformed. I also recommend to use all other retexture mods from other authors to get something like a remastered. 20 textures have been improved.

This mod improves the textures of:
  • Vincent Meis
  • Jethro
  • Mikul
  • City guardsmans
  • City guards arbalesters
  • Mercenary guards
  • Order quartermaster/guards
  • Other temerian guards

Details:
Now for more details on what I did. First I upscaled the textures to 4096x4096. Then in the editor I applied my own textures of high quality and saved them in 2048x2048 - this is the maximum allowed resolution in the game. That is vanilla textures were converted from 512x512 and 1024x1024 to 2048x2048, and 256x256 to 1024x1024. Unfortunately the faces are upscaled, but not really changed. I mean, it's almost imperceptible and you have to look closely to see the difference. And I have no idea how to make them look better. Apparently only if I create it from scratch, but I don't have that kind of knowledge and experience in texturing and modeling. What will definitely be noticeable, however, is Vincent's normal eyebrows. Now they can actually be seen and they look adequate.

I couldn't find all the guards I improved to take screenshots. Instead I'll just show them as textures. I'd be glad if you could help me to make "before" and "after" screenshots in dialogues.

Installation:
Drop the Guards HD Retexture folder or its contents into the Override folder. If you don't have one, then create it.
Example path: YourDisk\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\The Witcher Enhanced Edition\Data\Override

Why "or"? Because dropping a folder or its contents is no different. And it's much more convenient for me to work and install mods. So, you won't have to dig in mod textures and delete them. It will just be in the form of a folder at the top of the list. It's just that I've noticed that most people just throw the textures into the Override folder.

Feedback:
Like I said earlier, I would be very grateful if someone could take screenshots with the guards that I only showed as textures because I couldn't find or dialog with them to take a close-up screenshot.

Also if there is any bug or the texture looks weird please let me know and I will try to fix it.

Next ideas to retexture:
Merchants
Inkeepers
The knights/knights of the order
Coleman
Golan Vivaldi
Munro Bruys
Yaren Bolt and more!

Lastly I will say that I would welcome any support in the form of donation. Projects like this take a lot of time and effort.
Enjoy the mod and the game from the awesome CD Project Red!
