Thank you from the bottom of my heart for not making a shitty compilation of AI generated images. It makes me sad that the custom of using hand-made portraits, which was in the previous games, has been lost. I hope that over time more compilations and fanarts like this will come out.
No problem, though to be fair there's roughly 15% AI content in this pack as well since WH40K is nowhere near as popular as D&D in terms of available artwork.
I know that there are AI portraits here but at least said portraits' iconography is somewhat correct/acceptable to the setting compared to the other AI portraits that is posted whose iconography is a mixed bag. As long as the double headed eagle/aquila is there I'll be happy with it I'll just chalk it up to an Imperial planets' cultural take on the aquila same goes for the Imperialis(winged skull).
Otherwise thank you and good job with the portraits.
I manually edit/paint over most of the AI images to try and keep things "close-enough" to the game's aesthetic and lore. There's maybe 2 or 3 AI images in here which I haven't touched up in any way.
And you did a great job, because I recognise a few that I know are definitely not AI, but I have a hard time telling which ones are AI generated and which ones are just 40k fan-art (or even official art) I simply haven't come across.
To be perfectly honest, there are a couple AI images included in this Pack. Though I did some manual paint-overs to fix some of mistakes made by the AI.
Warrior-M1 (although I had to fix the right hand since it was a mess) Sister-F1 Psyker-F1 (again, had to fix both hands by painting over the original) Officer-F3 Warrior-M2 (unsure if this one's AI-generated) Bounty-F1 (only the head) Militant-M1 (used AI to expand the sides of the image and then painted over parts of it to make it look good enough, the original was too narrow to fit properly) Noble-M1 Officer-M3 (the entire image was AI-generated although the head was taken from a different image) Vanguard-M2 (only the head)
Sooo how did anyone get this working? I made a custom portait myself following the game's instructions, but in game, i have no option to actually USE it. I can preview it, it shows up, etc. but the only button when selecting it is "cancel."
You pick the Custom portraits just like the Default ones, by left clicking on them, provided you copied the portraits into the correct folder and the files have proper names and sizes. Once you selected the portrait go into Appearance and change ANY setting to update the portrait preview.
after the update today i cant select these portraits anymore, even if I pick them the game doesn't recognize I'm trying to change it and keeps showing the first default portrait.
Good portraits, but very few psykers. Female ones have few good options. But, all male psyker portraits that i managed to find so far in the portrait packs are often ugly ( also bearded and old) and clearly imperium or chaos aligned. I wanted to find a neutral psyker portrait thats not old/bearded, white male. Sigh.
I only include Portraits that meet a certain quality standard in my Packs, unfortunately it's not easy to find such illustrations for a Warhammer 40k setting. Your best bet would be photobashing a Portrait yourself to achieve your desired result.

Please keep an eye out for a good Idira alternative. It's hard enough to find a decent psyker portrait, let alone a black psyker.
Her default portrait is decent, but there is something about her face. There is something uncanny about it - More than a gilled mutant!
