maybe there is a misconception what this mod does. this mod simply cycles through all existing variants (the one you can select when crafting a shield). it does not add any new ones. previously in 2019, back in this mod this was done via the custom textures mod, but I have no clue how this would be done in todays time
I'm running a server for a few friends. If a couple of the players equipped it, would everyone see the changed shields? Would it be necessary for the person running the server to have it installed for it to work in a multiplayer game?
it's fully client side. it's okay if only a few players have it installed, the server doesn't need. when someone changes their shield style, everyone else immediately sees the change (Valheim keeps equipment synchronized for us. I didn't have to do anything for that)
shields have an internal variant number. when you change the style of a shield with the style menu in the crafting menu that number is saved into the crafted item, similar to things like its current durability. so for example two silver shields with different style are the exact identical item type, but their variant number is different, so the game gives them a different look.
so yes, this works with any modded shield that uses the vanilla style menu. I simply change the number (increase it by 1 and go back to the start when its the last style). absolutely everything about the item stays the same, no copy is made
