This is one of my favourite Deathmatch type game modes. A few weeks ago, my brother suggested we introduce his son to UT99, so we did. We had tons of fun, and I continued playing over the next days. I couldn't stop thinking "I wish there was a GunDM in this, like I used to play in Counter-Strike". But there wasn't. Admittedly, I didn't try very hard to find a mod, but I couldn't find one, so I made it myself.
The premise of the game is simple: Who ever gets the first frag with the rocket launcher wins. But you have to earn it.
Each tier comes with a different weapon. You start on tier 1, and have to frag your way up to tier 10, proving your skill to handle each weapon effectively. The last tier grants you the Enforcer with which you have to score, in order to get the rocket launcher - a chance to win the match. If you fail, you're left with the Enforcer to try again. If you're clumsy enough to kill yourself with it, you get demoted.
Why is this way more fun than regular Deathmatch?
Well, because it takes you out of you comfort zone. And not only you, but everybody that you're up against. It's challenging in more than one way, which makes it all the more rewarding to get there first. The best sessions I've had are those that consist of lots of consecutive short matches (2-5 minutes each).
A set of game type specific options (accessed through the Rules tab) let's you tailor the game to your preferences. Easy to difficult, short to long, calm to frantic. There's even an option to set a time limit, after which the winner is determined by progress.
