If you still need this map on expert load it up in Tedit and once you have it loaded look on the properties toolbar to the right there will be a check box beside Expert mode check that and save. Enjoy ! P.S you can also use this to remove all the crimson/corruption so it wont screw your map once you go on hardmode just be sure to check again after destroying the alters as they can spawn random crimson/corruption block around your map when you break them

When clicking the NPC's portrait and assigning their house, if they die they should reclaim the house/area you set them to. If not, try using TEdit and pointing all your NPCs to the spot you want them.

Though the question is to turn their map for expert to normal, it seems people using the suggestions in the thread have been successful changing their maps for normal to expert (the other way around than asked in the OP).
