Your template helped me understand the textures a lot, thank you so much! I'm curious, how were you able to load the model into the engine to wrap your texture? I'm interested in doing this so I don't have to pack and load the game every time I want to see if the patterning sits right. Thanks!
Yeah maybe I should add a note of that to the description - I was getting bored of having to launch the game to check the same. I almost included the model with the upload, but it's rather big. I'm not sure what your experience is with Blender so I'll just add the full steps here:
Use umodel and open "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stray" (override game detection with Unreal Engine 4.27)
Navigate to Game > Character > Cat > Mesh and open SKM_Cat.uasset
I used the latest version of blender and just made a new project (removed cube)
File > import > glTF > SKM_Cat.gltf (may take awhile)
Once imported, delete the animation that's tied to it for the default pose
Click on SKM_Cat001 on the right and navigate to the "Material Properties" tab (near the bottom - pink sphere)
Click which one you want (M_Cat_head_xxx, MI_Cat_body_xxx, M_Moustace_xxx, etc.)
Surface > Click the dot beside Base Color > Image Texture > Open > yourfile.png
Bam! Your texture is now on the model!
* oh and make sure to hit Viewport Shading in the top right to see it
Let me know if any of this is hard to follow or you want further clarification. I can also see if I can find any of the videos I checked out that may help guide you through it.
- Uploaded new changes that should help out and make things more clear!
please help! i did everything so far but i don't know anything further... i'm completely new to blender and all i could do was saving my cat as a blend file... i dunno ...
This helped me make the textures for putting my own cat into the game, so many thanks indeed for that. However, you've missed the UV for the furmesh! Didn't spot it myself until it was needed for the fluff. I did find a UV map for it eventually, but I mention it here in case you want to add it to your file for others.
I had also noticed that the original black cat had a grey mouth! Time for a vet visit for him! :D
Hi, followed your tutorial to add my cat and everything's ok with the textures on the model but I need to export file to pak or something else before pasting the VoidKitty pak file on the game folder? I'm new to blender so I've been stuck on the 10th step for awhile
I think my latest reply should help with that. If there's enough interest I can extract the models and add that under another upload if that's not out there already.
* I think I eventually understood what you were looking for - hopefully the new uploads help!
Ye \o/ The uv's are an important part to have when making textures via 2d art programs, otherwise you're just left guessing where the edges of the seams are at.
Admittedly I don't have the game yet myself but wanted to ask for the sake of others that do <u >
Yeah I'm really glad you posted that because it led me to dig into it a bit more. I'm still fresh to 3D modeling so it was fun learning about it and figuring out how to extract the UV layout.
I'm really glad you're liking it!! I'm thinking about adding another version soon of it with slightly lightened ears as well. Thank you for the comment and kind words :)
