This tutorial is the first in a series of works that will help others to learn various tasks regarding the modification of Starfield. It will follow the steps necessary for retexturing simple surfaces of vanilla assets in Starfield. It has been written for those who have no knowledge of this process and would like to learn. Once you complete the procedure, you will find that it’s really not that difficult. Learning how to accomplish this task will open new possibilities for you to make alterations to your game as you wish, and is quite rewarding. I will explain my steps from the beginning, right down to having the tools and folders to stay organized.
There are 3 versions of this document available. The first version (the original) is meant to be viewed in Microsoft Word as a "Web Layout". The second version is a modified version that can be read as a "Print Layout" view in Microsoft Word. The third version is a .pdf document. All 3 versions are the same with the exctption that for the "Print Preview" and ".pdf" versions, I had to shrink some of the images to fit them properly to the pages.
There may quite possibly be better methods of completing these steps. I am constantly trying to learn and the more I learn, the less I know. If you know absolutely nothing about NifSkope, then you know almost as much as I do about it. If the reader has suggestions or corrections to address regarding the content of this tutorial, I’m always open to hearing feedback, good or bad. These tutorials are finalized copies of my personal notes that I’ve decided to keep for my own future reference, in case I ever step away from the game for a time as I’ve had to do in the past with other great titles.
I recommend freshly formatting your computer and having a “Tabula Rasa”. I find that everything works wonderfully with this method. However, it’s not absolutely necessary. If you’ve already downloaded and installed the requirements of this tutorial, you may wish to skip ahead to Section 1 “Unpacking Assets”.
Text numbered entries coloured in blue are considered as steps, or instructions.
