    Update 2024-04-13:
Seemingly it slipped through my fingers, that Gamepass editions can now use Real-time Form Patcher (RTFP) by using the ASI-loader, which should make this mod compatible to Gamepass.
For installation of RTFP on Gamepass, please look at the RTFP modpage.

    RELEASE 2.0:
    Installation:

It is highly recommended to remove version 1 releases completely from your mod lists.
If you just install it on top, you keep a doubled set of name files, which does use twice the resources and will keep erroneous names active.
Also, it might block other mods using the MPS, depending on load order.
I highly recommend to use a mod manager. Personally, I use Vortex.
    1. Install SFSE (Starfield Script Extender).
    2. Install RTFP (Real Time Form Patcher for Starfield).
    3. Install "Souls of the Cities" (includes MPS) versions > 1.5 (multi-database support). This release will not work on earlier versions.
    4. Install The People of the World (this mod).
This will keep the names from Souls of the Cities, the names from this mod, and will be open to add any further mods that introduce new NPC names to the cities of Starfield.

Release 2.0 introduces a new file structure (multi-database support for MPS > version 1.5. The text files now have different file names to introduce full compatibility with mods like More Names (for the Modular People System), which I can absolutely recommend for everyone who wants a smaller set of names or as an addition to my mod to have an even bigger set of names in the game.

For other mod authors: My file names end with TPOTW, just to be sure you don't use this ending, if you want to create a name set yourself. I chose this name for being unique enough that unintentional incompatibilities with other name sets are very unlikely.

Thanks to the kind help of More Names (for the Modular People System) mod author ermakysion I could sort out some bugs regarding split names in Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese language and fix the issue, that vowels with macrons seemingly can not be displayed properly in Starfield. These characters have been replaced with the double vowel in case of Japanese language and single vowel for other languages like Scandinavic languages or Mandarin. Most likely the only option for now.

After the first mixed reactions to this mod, I hope the main page now explains, what this mod is all about, and I hope further discussions in this comment sections stay as calm, tolerant and helpful, as they are now.
I appreciate all your feedback, although any racist or discriminatory comments will not be tolerated. That's the only limitation to the discussion.
Thanks for your time and patience.

    Best regards and have fun!

"Ever thought, that Starfield is a bit anglo-centric?"... you think the people in the galaxy have "too American white" of names"?..wow...

     anglo

    noun

    • An English person or person of English ancestry.
    • In the United States, an American, especially a White American, whose native language is English. The term generally is used in contrast to Americans for whom Spanish is their native language, or people whose ancestry is from Latin America. The term is used without regard to English descent. It is likely derived as a reference to English (rather than Spanish) as a native language.
    • A white-skinned person.

Is there a question in this post? You are free to post a better term for what is meant, I am pretty sure you somehow got the meaning of what I wanted to express. This would have been reasonable, right?
Thanks for the time writing this, nevertheless.
      And yeah, "wow".

Author's not wrong. A nice bit of cultural diversity is a beautiful thing so all the players of the game can find a little bit of 'self' in their characters, and there were a whole load of fair skin folks in this game - we can be honest about that without rancor or malice. This mod adds cool names from multiple ethnic types to see, and that makes all the difference in the world.

Which of the two files listed is the right one? Is one a hotfix or something? Not quite clear considering both are 2.05.

edit: you fixed it. All set!

      Sorry for the confusion!
I had an internet issue while updating the mod, so there was a double upload (both contained the same files, though).
Since I found a last invalid character, I updated to another version, that did not get me any display issues with NPC names in an hour of running around in New Atlantis, so hopefully I finally got them all.
So I recommend installing 2.1 and be happy. Could be this is the final version of this mod. :-)
Best regards, and thanks for bringing the issue to my attention.

    Definitely giving this a try.
I also felt the cultures were a bit shallower than I had hoped for. The lack of actual names for folks is a bit bland to me. Bland to the point even I noticed the American centric flavor of the setting.

Extra variants of names is a small thing, but even a life long Anglo-American( well more Scotch-Irish but ya get the point ) like me can see the need for it :)

Please if you can add any  more small tweaks to the setting, go for it.

I have noticed one behavior in myself when this mod is in place. I don't automatically gravitate toward named NPCs. Normally I have gotten into the habit of just talking to named NPCs.  If I want to find out if an NPC is more than background I have to walk over and chat... a bit more time consuming but worth it for immersion and flavor. You fixed a flaw in my gameplay that I wasn't even aware of.

Oh, yes, this is what I experienced when testing my mod, too!
I am a huge fan of RPG-style playing, and the mod does a very good job for that. Not only, that the NPCs now have names, but now they have the full appearance and complex animation sets of the main NPC, even the same as the player. Facial expressions, everything. So there is no way to identify important NPCs by appearance or name anymore, you have to talk to them. For me, it changes gameplay quite a bit, and I love it.
Thank you for this comment, really appreciated!

The prerequisite "Souls of the Cities" mod does rely on SFSE, which does NOT support Gamepass, unfortunately.
So, sorry, but Gamepass is not supported.

Please note, not EVERY citizen is renamed because of reasons that are explained in-depth in the Souls of the Cities mod documentation ...
It can only rename the citizens of the 4 big cities, and not e.g. in Gagarin, and also the Well.
To check, if the Souls of the Cities mod is running, which this mod is only an add-on to, go to Jemison, New Atlantis. When leave the landing pad and go to the city, you should meet a lot of renamed citizens.
Pls. check, and in case it is not running, check with the mod author of the Souls of the Cities mod.
Also - it is strongly advised to use a mod manager, just in case you did not.

So far, I saw no problems with it.
AFAIK Starfield handles unicode characters quite well. I used sometimes several versions of a name, but they all are romanized, though. So, if someone needs something else, like the original unicode with other character sets of a language, I have not tested this and also don't use these in my add-on.
If you find wrong characters or experience any other problem, let me know in the bug section or here!
      Best regards.

There are several multipart surnames (mostly Spanish, Portuguese, and Dutch) that are split between two or more lines. Examples:

      dos
      Santos

      = dos Santos

      de
      Oliveira

      = de Oliveira

      da
      Costa

      = da Costa

      do
      Nascimento

      = do Nascimento

      Van
      den
      Berg

      = Van den Berg

      Van
      Dyk

      = Van Dyk

      Van
      Leeuwen

      = Van Leeuwen

Some surnames occur multiple times. Chaudhary, for example, occurs nine times. This won't break anything; it just means these names will be selected more often than others.

Yes, I have seen this already. This SHOULD have been fixed with V. 1.10, but I will take another look.
The multiple occurance of esp. some Asian names is intentionally, so they will be picked more often.
      Thank you for the reply!

Okay, I'm testing your name lists and it seems that the game is rendering vowels with macrons as small filled boxes. I came across an NPC with the first name Yūma, and another with the last name Endō, and they both had this error.

      Oh, interesting.
Should never happen and did not yet happen on my PC.

May I ask which locale settings on PC, OS version and language settings for the game you have, so I can try to repeat the issue and find a solution?
      Thanks for the heads-up.

Ah, I see, I managed to find an NPC who had this issue myself.
So, seemingly there is an issue with macrons, confirmed.
I assume that the problem might be the char set used in Starfield itself missing some characters, because The Souls of the Cities mod seems to handle all other diacritics seemingly well, and it is not that easy to mess single ones up in code. Sigh. I see, what I can do to fix this (temporarily or permanently). I might try to check with another mod I have seen, which changes the typo and for the time being, I will check if I can replace the macrons by script and update the files. Thank you very much for your help.

(P.S.: Still, could be a codepage issue somewhere. 2024, and unicode and codepage issues are still "a thing", unfortunately, with major OSes. Very annoying.)

Hmm, the names that use macrons, are they all Japanese? If so, the long vowels could be changed to their non-macron equivalents:

      ā > aa
      ē > ee, ei
      ī > ii
      ō > oo, ou
      ū > uu

      Unfortunately, they are not...
      Also other languages. (142 appearances)
I will see if I can identify the Japanese ones and replace them by hand, the other ones I replace with the single vowel.
Thanks again for chiming in, very appreciated!

There is a reason for that. As soon as I use the lists of the original, I rely on the OK of the mod creator. Although I have no problem with that, I wanted to be as free as possible to work on my add-on. This way I do not have to update when the original is updated, for example. In the end, there for sure will be a lot of different flavors of "Soul of the Cities", and I guess that is exactly what it is made for. Everyone can use what he wants, merge it for his own purpose of publish their own ideas of society. E.g. a Star Wars variant or other complete conversions.
Thanks for the kind words. Very appreciated.

Sorry what I meant was that another mod that works with MPS is  https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/8568 and that mod adds to the existent text lists from which MPS draws its names wheras you aim to replace the existent list. You do not need the okay of the author to add to or patch their work; the entire mod ecosystem would have collapsed or been less vibrant if we ever needed to get a mod author's okay to add or  to their work. Where you need to get a mod author's permission (and that isn't even a hard fast rule) is if you are wholesale incorporating their mod within your own mod without any changes.

Anyhow. I think to make it less confusing to people is to let them know in the description you are replacing the existent lists in the mod or else they may get confused and think that this mod is working like More Names (for the Modular People System) and adding to the name lists.

Again, like the mod but I was confused on some bits and know it seems clearer to me now.

My mod at present replaces previously replaced the list included in the MPS; however, it can be made to extend now extends it simply by changing the file names. This is because LarannKiar added multi-database support to the MPS in v1.5. The mod can now support an arbitrary number of txt files, so long as they follow the established naming conventions. Example: FemaleNames.txt > FemaleNamesMore.txt, FemaleNamesWorld.txt, etc.

I'm planning to update I updated my mod to make these very changes, and will run it alongside People of the World (and the vanilla database provided with MPS) to get a truly huge selection of names.

I seemingly did not read the documentation of MPS close enough.
Of course I do not want to let users unintentionally overwrite other extensions they might already have, when they assume, my mod is compatible in terms of multi-database support. Great! I will check out your mod, too, soon. Generated with a python language package? Cool. I am still a dinosaur sticking to perl, when it comes to text, but did some work in python, when I did some work on machine learning for audio ... (python seemingly is THE AI programmer's tool nowadays...)
I will change my file naming scheme for the text files with the next update, so they work along nicely with mods of other authors! Again, thanks for the kind help and information, always appreciated.

I guess I'm mostly just confused. You say the majority are white, yet when I went over to New Atlantis it seemed to me that the vast majority were non-white and there was a pretty even ratio of white to Asian to black/brown. Maybe my game is different than yours, idk

However, I understood perfectly, then I downloaded the file, looked at the names and had confirmation of what I thought. In the original game it appears that the majority of those who left Earth before the collapse are from the United States/British Commonwealth as the majority of names reflect American citizens, be they white or second generation immigrants. Indians and Chinese and other Asians who are the majority of the world's population are not represented enough, let alone the Russians who would have had/made a good contribution in space technology, almost absent. Are they all dead on earth? Here I had this impression.

THIS is EXACTLY what the intention of this mod add-on IS.
You walk through the cities and they appear like it is actually a post-apocalyptic universe that appears more like the US were the only ones who could escape earth! That's what Starfield feels to me.
And I wanted to change that.

      You explained it perfectly.
      THANK YOU.

Whoever felt totally OK with Starfield's universe: Nothing wrong with that. You can see it, like it is a descended Fallout in space.
However, I saw that there are a lot of translations of Starfield mods, that are made for russian and chinese language.
And I think everybody should have the Starfield that they feel comfortable with.
Personally, I feel a lot more comfortable, if I can immerse in a Starfield, where people from all nations tried to escape earth, and the ethnics and cultures melt together in a way, that the origin of the people on earth matter less and less. Names are a way to reflect this. Every combination of visual origin can have every type of name and surname, including those prevalent in South America, Africa. Eastern Europe and Asia.
At the moment I am working on updating the lists, so that more Asian names, especially Chinese and Indian names, appear, to reflect a possible world population at the time of the earth exodus in a more "realistic" way.
Let's face it, probably all major nations and their neighbors might have had access to a working space travel technology.
Your opinion on this might be different, and this is fine, too!
Use only, what you feel comfortable with.
