    ‼️READ BEFORE REPORTING AN ISSUE‼️

This mod works by extending the vanilla system for hiding suits and helmets.

If it doesn’t appear to be working for you, please ensure that you have these vanilla options enabled:
    - Hide Spacesuit in Settlements
    - Hide Helmet in Breathable Areas

Both of these options are available in the inventory screen, in the suit and helmet tabs respectively.

Fair warning, I will most likely just delete any further comments about this mod not working, unless you explicitly state that you have enabled these options. The way this mod works is already mentioned briefly in the description, but should be made very clear by this comment now.

Having a problem on console (Xbox Series X to be specific), downloaded the mod, had it downloaded way before the newest update to it, and now the Creation Menu keeps stating its missing and that I re-download it (only happened after updating it), did a few tests, and it essentially soft locks you on the main menu, stuck loading the save, continually prompting that it needs to be re-downloaded, which sucks since I'd like to continue using it. It's name changes to smarterspacesuitautohide.esm after it wigs out thinking it isn't installed.

Say no to the first prompt, current to the second prompt, and yes to the third prompt. Should work fine.

Admittedly I did not anticipate the ESM name change being an issue... hmm. Too late to change it now.

You are indeed correct, working perfectly fine even though the Creation Menu says otherwise. When it came to the second prompt I told it to use my current lod instead of the old one and it's running just fine. Thank you for the help mate!

Should work fine moving forward. Those nag prompts only happen the first time you load a save with an old set of mods.

It appears there are some planets that, despite being breathable, make you wear the suit, but without a helmet, otherwise it works fine.

I can understand your comitment to free mods and achievements (I am a Linux Developer myself).. one fairly simple workaround might be to post a paid mod for 1 creation credit for the console users (if you want to support console).  This effectively bypasses the problem at minimal cost to console users.

i have both options enabled yet my follower (sara) wears her suit on breathable planets i.e. Jemison (your images show that it should be hidden for a follower on a breathable world). just the suit not her helmet. when i unequip my suit she is no longer wearing the suit and when i reequip she puts it back on. not sure why its not working fully? this is similar to a base game bug i experienced where even though the option to hide space suit in breathable area was enabled, my spacesuit was still showing in breathable areas like my ship and Jemison.

I have this exact same issue.   Both Hides toggled, works for me, fails to work for my companion.

Unrelated to this mod I noticed the following with companions:

By default they usually don't have spacesuit, helmet and pack in their inventory, but will wear then anyway, where needed.
But they do have apparel in their inventory, and if you remove that, they will start wearing their spacesuit everywhere, not because they like it or find it approbriate, but because they just don't have anything else to wear.
If you store some apparel in their inventory again, they will wear spacesuits only where necessary and wear their apparel from their inventory where no spacesuit is needed.

So I see now that I have a smarter spacesuit auto-hide and a smarterspacesuitautohide.esm both in my load order list.  Is this the way it should be? If not which one do I need to keep and which one should I disable/delete? Thanks!

I LOVE THIS! Thank you so much! this always bothered me so much in vanilla!

Would it be possible to forward the same mechanic to NPC's (like enemy factions) as well?

This is a very elegant solution for spacesuit auto-hiding -- thanks for sharing!

First: confirming I have the correct hiding spacesuit/helmet options enabled in my inventory. :)

Issue: I am early in the game, doing the Return to Vectera mission, where you have to wear your suit/helmet outside. Once I opened the sealed airlock area, both me and my companion completely take off our suits. Is this WAD behavior? I would have thought that instead, this would be one of the situations where we only took our helmets off but kept the suit on?

Please advise if something is not working, or if it's in fact working as designed. Thank you so much!

Edit: It worked as expected on a pirate base... maybe Vectera's airlock area is just weird.

Vectera might be considered a settlement or something. Unsure.

Yeah, that might be the case -- perhaps they treat it as a settlement since it's the starting area of the game.

vectera air locks seem to behave differently than other locations. If suit fails to go back on, make sure to redo airlocks. It normally triggers it.

I have both options enabled. I just went to the nova galactic shipyard for the quest to find that pilot, it does have a breathable atmosphere but its considered a dungeon with hostiles everywhere. When I enter it hides my suit and helmet.

My question is is this normal for this dungeon? Is it supposed to hide your stuff in dungeons?

Is there a setting to make it so it only hides your stuff in cities, or your ship but not in dungeons?

That would be intended. No point putting your suit on to board a sealed space station. With this mod, your suit’s behavior will match the vanilla behavior of Sarah’s suit in this place (not visible).

I installed and used this mod in a new game start after I installed the Shattered Space DLC.  It worked great and I am totally happy.

I wanted to point out that the settings for hiding helmet and suit are apparently reset (to be visible) when starting a newgame+, meaning that the mod will appear to not work.  This was driving me crazy, but I reread your cautionary note and finally restored these settings.  It's strange that starting newgame+ would change this, but for me at least, it did so.

Thanks again for a useful quality of life mod!
