    Infos, FAQ's&News
About the new system survey and codex journals:

    - the whole "system mini journal aspect" has been revamped. there is now a dedicated system "journal" if you press the "s"(system) or "c"(codex). the structure might be intially confusing, because you will be presented with a 240 elements grid. each of the elements has a "button" like shape and a text input area. the text input area is supposed to act like a "naming field", so, for example, you could write a system name into it. if you then click the adjacent button, it will expand the "journal" underneath which will give you access to 12 text fields plus 12 adjacent image spaces. the idea here is simple: combine text and images you make in game

technically that means what I present you with here, is an interactable in game "Wikipedia" or "Codex" or whatever name you wanna give it. adding images is as easy as to make a Steam screenshot and then use the Steam overlay to catch the image link and put it into your journal's URL imagelink section. of course all the new features are fully saved to local storage, and can be exported to an external .json, so to say "saved" as a game would be saved. but mind though, given the sheer quantitie of entries this new addition is potentially going to add to local storage, I wouldn't rely on LS at all. from here now it's more like a "short time" saving/back-up instance depending on the number of entries. you will most certainly lose content if you close the application without properly saving(exporting) to .json

and if that wasn't enough, as already mentioned, there are two instances of that new journal. one is a"system" journal, the other is meant to be used as "fauna/flora codex"., but of course you are free to use those journals for whatever you like. i'd love to see some of you guys sharing .json exports online for others to import. but mind though, the codex, for now, is basically just a copy aste variant of the system journal, because I didn't found the time and enough reasons to customize it apart from the system journal. but that doesn't mean it is not fully intact, it only means it will be subject to strong visual variation in future updates

    Vortex troubleshooting thanks to @voxbox13:

"When the tool is in its uninstalled state (not disabled, uninstalled), open the mod's action menu on the right (the dropdown icon next to
the "Remove" button). Choose the option "Unpack (as-is)" and it will install it correctly."

Yes! This is how to do it.
*This is the same way Gopher recommends installing ENBs with Vortex.
(Also have to make sure they're packaged correctly to begin with.)

Notice the new version has major changes in how system journals work, and the system pages are gone, because they have near 0 value with the new system. I will submit a new video and screenshots for the new version tomorrow or Friday(2.2.2024).

The version number on the Web page seems to be behind the latest version, including the version that added the version number to the page. At  least it's still showing 0.1.3.19 for me.

I can see only top left corner of the map. Sol is for example at the bottom of the map and I can't see the systems below it. Also when I open the system it only shows top left corner of that system page. I don't see any options to change resolution or move the map. What to do?
edit: I found that I have to decrease the zoom in my browser and all is good :)

How do you change the state of a system, i.e. from discovered to surveyed, etc.? According to the settings button this is indicated by the font color, but how do you set it for a system?

If it tracks visited and not visited systems I am in. Have 119 systems visited and running out of patience.

This is such a great idea. I'll try it out.

    Question.
In Image #7 above, there is what looks like a comments box. Is that a feature where we can enter our own notes?
From what I'm seeing on the Description page, it sounds like the answer is: "No, that is info provided by the author."
    But I figure I'd double-check...

There is global journal(key j), and an individual journal for all systems(key (left)CTRL when hovering over system). To show what you've written you'd press (left)SHIFT when hovering a system.

Great idea. I am playing around with it right now, here are some observations. I am using Brave browser.

    • I first downloaded it manually. Extract would not work with Total Commander, but it is a problem with the .7z plug-in. WinRar extracted the archive without issues.
    • Downloading / installing with Vortex does not work!!! (I prefer having external tools outside the game directory anyway, but I keep track of version updates via Vortex, so I had a look at the file structure Vortex creates -> totally messed up)
    • System properties function: Discovered and Surveyed work as a toogle, Outpost does not. How can I get rid of an accidentally placed Outpost? Ideally, it would work as a toggle as well (Bug?)
    • Would be great if the resource wheel could be toggable as well. Right now, I need to keep holding R
    • System viewer: would be great if the resources of the objects would be displayed upon hovering over them
    • System viewer: The "x" to close the viewer is detached from the viewer pane. It might be easier to find if it's attached to the pane
    • Information content: it would be nice if there was a similar feature for the organic components as there is for the anorganic resources, especially since the game is a complete failure in this regard. Even after completely sampling a planet it is nowhere document which plants or animal resources can be produced. Example use case: I am looking for a planet where I can produce "Membrane" in an Outpost.

Overall, I was looking for something like this for a while. Great work!

Yeah, organics is on the list, but 1. they are much more complex, not all organics are statically distributed, and I haven't even figured 50% of the wildlife, let alone visited all planets. I also just figured yesterday you can build those Biolabs to produce organics, so in combination what you just said, everything you can build in those is limited by the planet's flora and fauna, and natural organic resources?

The x is tricky, as is building for various platforms and browsers. The X is a good example for this, as I had multiple bug reports even before release, even on computers that are mirroring my system. Virtually everything can affect it. Resolution, Windows scaling, type of Browser, you name it. I might end up just using a simple "exit" key for all menus to close. The X was a good idea and looks visually appeasing, but practically not so good.

System widgets are going to be an endless journey, but yeah, I may build icons that will show up when you hover a planet in the System Widget. Until then, there are many QoL ways to get that info via Wiki links. Double clicking the star icons usually is the swiftest way, because the UESP Wiki has all in one place for easy access. My second favorit info base is definetively Inara.cz, only it doesn't have fancy images.

Oh? So I must have accidentally changed something the way outpost icons are handled. Because last I checked it was working. I'll look into this tomorrow. Until then you can fix everything easily by editing the .html code with Notepad++, and/or using F12 debug mode in any browser to remove the outpost vars. It is found in "Application -> LocalStorage". Just find the system and remove the outpost var. Once done press F5 to refresh the page.

I'm confused about Vortex though. Why would it work with Vortex? It's a web page.

      Thanks for your reply.
The point about Vortex was for cases like tomomi1922, who try to install and run it that way - after all, you did not restrict the download to "manual" only, but also offer the mod-manager option. Vortex messes up the directory structure and file locations, so all relative references cease to work.  That's what I wanted to warn about. Maybe you could put a warning in the file download text or in the description. Why Vortex does not offer a simple way for mod authors to tell it to leave the folder structure is simply beyond me.

Organic resources - it is even more complex. Only some of the plants can be grown in greenhouses and only some of the animals can be domesticated. Once you have completely scanned a species / plant, the scanner will point out if you can use it in that way. I am unsure if some of that information is procedurally generated and different from game to game, but at least some of that content is static.
My go-to place to search for the more exotic resources is this: Inara Starfield Database

I'm now going to install your latest update and work on it.

I'm confused about Vortex though. Why would it work with Vortex? It's a web page.

With external tools like this one, I also like to install them with Vortex: I set them on "Disabled" in the mods list, that way they are available in the mod staging folder, and I can access them easily from there. It makes updating practical.

TIP! As pega3 mentioned, Vortex does something strange to the folder structure. BUT: When the tool is in its uninstalled state (not disabled, uninstalled), open the mod's action menu on the right (the dropdown icon next to the "Remove" button). Choose the option "Unpack (as-is)" and it will install it correctly.

This is great! I always thought it bogus that an civilization as advanced as Starfield's didn't have some sort of compendium or ship database you could use to get this info in game. When mod development is official, I'm hoping that something like this could be implemented directly into the game.

I 'd recommend looking at this website and see how they implemented their search engine for Starfield.

    =248]https://inara.cz/starfield/starsystems/?formbrief=1&pa1[]=248

I stumbled across it and have found it really easy to narrow down ideal sites for setting up outposts. I can pick as many resource combinations as I'm looking for and search to see if any occur on the same planet or same system. Plus it tells me which of the organic resources are "domesticatable".

The only reason I bring it up is because I was using the wiki earlier and I found it cumbersome and not very efficient trying to find ideal outpost locations. The inara site was great and I think it would be a great thing to keep in mind as you develop your tool further.

    Looking forward for more updates.
