I'm curious, since your working on makeup items, have you by any chance found where the colours are stored, I've looked through the esm extensively in xEdit and through the bsa files, cant find anywhere to make the dark option a true black instead of a meh grey/brown.
No sorry I've not looked...I dont think you will find colours, I dont think they exist, as they are rendered in black and white as dds,then the game engine renders the colour change option, I believe its a fault basically with the game engine However It was the same for skyrim, actually alot worse , pushing the intensity slider to max does improve the black and how I dealt with it in skyrim was either applying makeup directly to the dds texture file or using ENB Which has a black colour correction option in its settings.

starfield/data folder (same as skyrim)
install any new textures in there, it's sorted it for me as I was missing all my texture mods after latest official update
