For anyone having trouble getting the Night Vision Hotkeys to work, follow these steps, 1. Download the Starfield Hotkeys mod at https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/1578 2. Unzip the file into ...\Docuemts\My Games\Starfield directory 3. Double click the disable_hotkeys.cmd file. This will undo any changes you have made. If there is a Hotkeys directory still in your ...\Documents\My Games\Starfield directory, delete the folder. The same for the Starfield game directory. Delete the Hotykeys directory. 4. Double click the enable_hoykeys.cmd file. This will reinstall the hotkeys functionality. 5. Copy the Night Vision Hotkeys.ini file into your ...\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Hotkeys\ directory. Overwrite the Hotkeys.ini file that is already there. That is just a sample Hotkeys file. 6. Fire up Starfield and hit the "N" key.
Would it also be possible to get a Thermal mode similar to the old advanced recon mod for the old fallout games? basic enemy highlighting and thermal ghosts through walls etc
Worked flawlessly BEFORE the patch in May but now it's behaving rather strangely. Works fantastic outside in the sunlight lol. Indoors is another story, I don't know how the lights are set up inside buildings by Bethesda but it appears to turn off/on Night vision depending on where you are standing inside the building, and it doesn't necessarily turn on in dark areas. Needs a fix me thinks.
The mod "works", although it's not quite what I was expecting.
First, I understand that you didn't create this from scratch, you're just activating/repurposing an existing feature in a new manner. Second, I understand that until the CK is released, modding options will be quite limited.
That being said, I wouldn't call this "Night Vision", at least in the sense we're all used to. Night vision is typically "light amplification", which amplifies ambient light such as starlight or other sources such as a distant street light. This is also why looking at a bright light source such as a light bulb or fire with night vision device active causes your vision to "white out".
Unfortunately, this mod's "night vision" effect is not amplifying any light. It's more or less just a green filter being applied. Dark areas with this mod active are still dark, just with a green tint to it. When trekking through a dark cave or abandoned building with limited lighting, this mod doesn't really do anything to help see where you're going or to locate objects. And while I don't use the crappy vanilla flashlight, it's still better for seeing in the dark than this fake night vision effect.
Is there any way to adjust this mod's effects, such as increasing brightness/contrast while it's active? Something that would actually help see a bit better in dark areas without having to keep turning your flashlight on/off. Since your mod is just using a macro to activate a console command, maybe there are commands to adjust the brightness/contrast levels, which are increased while the "night vision" effect is active, and reset to normal once the effect is turned off. Due to using macros for the mod to function, calling multiple console commands shouldn't be an issue.
I've already endorsed the mod because it does work, just not as expected. I'm hoping there's a way to improve the effects and actually make it worth using. For now, it'll remain installed, but I'll be sticking with a flashlight mod until this one can be improved.
I agree with everything you said. This is not a true Night Vision mod, it is just a hack. Plus I would like to add Recon highlighting effect but there is only so much you can do with console commands. For a true Night Vision I need to be able to create an Esp plugin with a proper IMAD controlled by a Papyrus script.
I have been playing around with xEdit but I do not think it is ready yet. Adding plugins is hit and miss right now. The same for Papyrus scripting, there is too much missing or unknown.
As soon as the official mod tools are released I will be happily remaking this mod and working on some other ideas. :-)
Thanks for the response, sorry for my delayed reply. I understand what you mean, without the CK there are going to be a lot of limitations on modding. Until then, it's been pretty cool to see what the mod authors have been coming up with. Some (like you) are finding ways to use or alter vanilla effects/mechanics, and others are able to add in some crazy new stuff that I didn't think was possible without the CK (like functional brigs for example).
Are you aware of any console commands that could be run as part of a script, that can be combined with the current function of your mod? Something that can adjust the brightness/contrast/gamma/etc while the NV effect is on, and restore those settings when the NV is turned off? With the right settings, it might help to brighten and clean it up a bit to sort-of look more like working NV instead of just a green filter.
The Starfield Hoykeys mod simply enables hotkey functionality in Starfield. There may be other ways to get hotkeys working in Starfield, ie. AutoHotkeys, but I do not know if my mod would work with other hotkey methods. There was one other user who had trouble with my mod because he used a different hotkeys mod.
So all I can say is that if you use Starfield Hotkeys then this mod will work.
Oh well, I did want to use this mod, sick of struggling in the dark, but either this, or the Hotkey Mod crashes my game. Had to uninstall them both after constant CTD's.
Sorry to hear this. Not sure what the cause could be as this is just a couple of basic console commands. Perhaps check and see if Photo Mode works for you as all I am doing is applying the Night Vision filter from Photo Mode. Or try another Hokey enabling mod and see if that fixes the problem.
How are you struggling in the dark, Bethesda has never been able to do proper dark nights, that's why we get mods for darker nights and in the past ENB to create proper darkness that would require a night vision mod.
Im so sorry but im a bit confused. Will this mod work with just this one file? Other than the hotkey mod ofc. Its seems like there is a missing file of some sort. All that's here are the lines for macro and hotkeys..
I would have preferred a version that simply lightened the scene without a color tint. But until we get Bethesda's mod tools I could only work with the IMADs that are in the game already. This traditional green IMAD is from the Photo Mode. Other possible IMADs I tried are B&W or red or blue Photo IMADs. So far I have not found a mode that just lightens the scene. Once the mod tools are released I can create an IMAD without a color tint.
If you want to try some other IMADs then in the macros replace the 00103BC6 with one of these, B&W 00103406 Noir 001033E7 OnlyRed 0020119B Bloodshot 0022637E Blue 001E5BF0 BlueCool 001EB726
Not sure if any of these are better than the green but you can try. I had been working on a version that offered more than one color tint. It was getting complicated so I decided to just release the traditional green tint.
I also wanted to add in the Recon effect but I don't think that can be done with console commands. Lets hope the mod tools will be released soon.
For those who may be curious as to what the different colors are like, but also effective as a night vision.....the Bloodshot 0022637E, is far and away the best one. If maybe your tired of the same old green night vision.
Been trying for more then an hour now trying to get this to work, to no avail. I've done everything in the description. When I press N....nothing happens. The command runs, but no green effect. I have noticed that others have commented, that the "Hotkeys" folder goes into the Starfield game directory, .../SeamLibrary/steamapps/common/Starfield/Hotkeys/Hotkeys.ini But when I put it there, no command appears. When I place the folder in the Documents Starfield file, the command appears....just still no green Night-vision effect. HEEELLLP!!!!!......Thanks

That worked!.....I think what my issue was, is I already had an existing Hotkeys.ini.....however it was not named "Hotkeys", it was StarfieldHotkeys.ini Not to mention, the original Hotkeys for a different mod, were working without having the Hotkeys enabled under Main in the Custom.ini.....so how that was happening, I have no idea. Anywho.....Thanks for the help, appreciate you.....and the mod!
No, the file goes into the "Hotkeys" folder in the Starfield game directory, .../SeamLibrary/steamapps/common/Starfield/Hotkeys/Hotkeys.ini.
In your StarfieldCustom.ini file you need to add these lines, [Menu] bUseConsoleHotkeys equals 1 sConsoleINI equals Hotkeys\Hotkeys.ini (Replace the word equals with an actual equals sign. Have to do it this way as Nexus thinks these lines are actual javascript code)
That should be enough to get the hoteys working. If that still does not work then use the Starfield Hotkeys mod at https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/1578. That is the mod I used to get hotkeys working on y system. :-)
Yes I was going through the IMADs in the game looking for a better Hight Vision effect. So for v2 I will release other color tints. Red is on the list. If there any other color tint requests just post it here. :-)
Yes, it was there this whole time but just implemented in the Photo Mode. You could take Night Vision screenshots but not use Night Vision in the game itself. Must have been missed on their ToDo list. Or maybe Bethesda just got lazy knowing modders will figure it out. Sometimes Bethesda games feel like self-checkout at the grocery store.
Yes, self-cook is more accurate...and scary. Lets hope self-cook restaurants never become a thing.
I actually don't mind some DIY in games. One of the reason I play a lot of Bethesda games is that you can poke around and fix or improve the game. No game is perfect and having the ability to fix broken parts keeps me coming back to a game. I get frustrated waiting for developers to broken no mod games.
