I don't why but I can't get this to work from my starfieldcustom.ini or my starfieldprefs.ini. I have to use the console command every time I start the game cos it just won't take effect. Odd because other settings under display in my custom ini are working.
If you have an autoexec or any "bat" file which have the line refreshini then remove this line from it. (from all of them) Idk why some bat mods (enhanced shadows, AI, whatever) come with this line, as it reverts most changes of the starfieldcustom and other bat files back to what the actual default ini says.
Hey I can't reply to my original comment because it's locked so I'll just reply here. I'm not running any bats but I had a good comb through my files anyway - couldn't find anything with refreshini. There was one CCR toml with a setini setting that I removed just in case, didn't fix it.
Did some more testing and it is definitely SOMETHING along the lines of what you're saying, because launching the game through steam instead of SFSE loader does actually work. So does putting the line in the starfield.ini in the game directory.
I've disabled all SFSE mods and anything with it's own ini - still doesn't work. Might have to literally enable everything one by one lol, unless it's SFSE itself somehow... who knows. Thanks for your help anyway!
Yes some flare effects are also getting dimmer but that's only what's under the post fx flare/lens texture, and there's so much bloom anyway that the difference is minimal. Some street lamps bloom fx are also getting dimmer since it's related to volumetric lighting, but it's relative to the light diffusion in the "fog" or "smoke" that's around it. So I think speaking of fog is relevant. What other effect is there anyway? Ok Space dust, but looks like space fog to me. Anyway it's not making any effect go missing anything unless you put it to a very low value like 0.1, I suppose? What else, chimney smoke in Neon? Same idea, it's so strong by default it won't go missing. But you're still right, one shouldn't put something as low as 0.05 or 0.0, then some effects will go missing. Also I get it for the planets and mines/caves, but Neon and The Key... The air in there just look as unbreathable as in a smoking room. So until the CK release, it's just a workaround I guess.
A .dll would be version dependant, an .ini line is not. A .dll would mean you have to restart the game each time you changed its settings for fine tuning. Here you have a console command to fine tune, and a single .ini line to add once you're happy with a value. It's really as simple as it can be. Also editing a single .ini line isn't more complicated than installing SFSE and a SFSE dll correctly. I mean, none of these things are complicated if you can read...

fVolumetricLightingIntensity does more than change the fog thickness.
You might end up missing other lighting effects
Thank you for your work dude !
