Can anyone help me with his? It seems I cannot start the game through MO.
When I try I get this message: sfse MO error
That I need to add it to exclusion. And I did: win11 defender exclusion

But still it won't let me start the game. Any ideas?

    EDIT:
Found the reason why it didn't work. Had to run MO as administrator and now it workes.

    Hey-
I am new getting into creating mods and such and found this on a google search when looking up how to edit things. I had a question though because I can't seem to find it and you have quite a bit of info here. Do you know how to edit a dll file to update the version to match the updated version of starfield? There is a mod that has been abandoned because the guy who made it quit playing and I was trying to update the version info for myself to be able to use it and I can't for the life of me find the information anywhere. I have his source files also but like i said..very new to this..and struggling quite a bit. Any info you could shed light on would be greatly appreciated!

Sadly thats a bit beyond my skillset, but I wish you luck with your update!

Id suggest looking for articles on the same question but for FO4 or Skyrim SE mods and you may find some general information to point you in the right direction.

No matter what I do, I can't get it to work, I think. I am testing with the community-patch and Functional Brigs. But, I can't get the latter to work no matter wat tutorial I use.

Latest SFSE, game-version, Plugins.txt-enabler, different folders, disabling/emptying/removing testfile-line in the ini, using Vortex, using MO2, installing manually
ARGH! It's so easy with elder scrolls and Fallout... but somehow, with 15 years of modding those, I cant seem to get this to work :'(

Thanks for the guide! I made a video discussing how to get started on INI and BAT file modding. I may make another from this guide. Thanks again :)

I just watched your video and I am a little confused. I thought I was supposed to place the StarfieldCustom.ini in the Steamapps Starfield folder, not the one in the documents folder? Is that why my mods are not working? I also thought that the mods are supposed to work once they are downloaded? I am so confused, it was so much easier with Fallout 4, and Kingdom Come Deliverance.

    Starfield Files Images

Please HELP me! I am desperate to get some mods working. I have tried to follow many different "how to" enable and add mods, and yet I can't get one to function. I think I downloaded the Starfield Script Extender, the "Baka" (whatever that means) file, create a StarfieldCustom.ini file, deleted a data file in the documents location of the game. Here are some pics of the files arrangement and downloaded files. Any advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I have used mods for Fallout 4, Kingdom Come Deliverance successfully in the past. However it seemed to me that all the mods went into the same folder and I had to add a "mod_order.txt" folder that I had to manually add the names of the mod files in. Is this something I have to create? I use Nexus as my Mod Manager, and Vortex to install the files. I am using Windows 11. I get quite intimidated when it comes to creating or deleting files. It seems as though depending on the type of mod determines where the mod should be loaded. Unfortunately I don't understand this.

Hi. Does anyone know of a tutorial / guidelines on putting multiple loose file mods in to one or more BA2 files?

I tried combining the 18 texture mods that I have in to one group so that there are no duplicate files - i.e. overwrite lower priority mods with higher ones. Then split that package in to multiple BA2v3 files but it seems none of the mods worked. I can get them to work if I batch them together and add to BA2s - but that means I'm loading duplicate files.

    Any recommendations? Thanks.

I have a problem, created  Custom.ini (not txt 100%). Used the minimum option of three lines. And even without the presence of mods installed manually, simply because of a file in the Documents folder (or OneDrive documents), the game starts but when loading a save it freezes with endless loading.
At the same time, mods work in Vortex. It’s the fashions with replacing clothes, etc. that don’t work.
I can’t find a solution anywhere, there is no such problem anywhere. It is these mods that are installed in Vortex but do not work (it seems to me that mod data files are not even created in the structure). The rest work great; if there was a conflict, I removed them or replaced them with others. Everything was amazing.t (3

I'm going crazy, it is not working, why, for the love of a s#*! covered stick....

No, really, I have been at this for 6 hours now, it is 1:30 AM.
So, everything is set up right, reddit post here of everything I have done already
     https://www.reddit.com/r/starfieldmods/comments/16ybq8k/mods_not_working_tried_everything_dear_lord_help/
and now I am trying this with MO2, and still, nothing, nothing at all, what the hell am I doing wrong, I've checked it all 20 times or more and looked through every little detail. It is like the game just WON'T read the bloody Custom ini. I've done it manually and with MO2 and still nothing.
I thought maybe I spelt something wrong in the ini but no, it is perfect, not a line or letter out of place...
Please, what am I doing wrong, I just wanna get this working and go to bed.

Hey I saw your post! Sorry your having a hard time!

Lets break it down from the beginning:

      1. Install a Mod Manager
(Done, you made a portable install, yes?)
      2. Install a Plugin for it to support the game we are modding
(you mustve gotten this or the beta from their discord to have gotten this far, right? which one just so i know?)
      3. Install a script extender which many mods are dependant on
(the sfse_loader.exe and sfse_x_x_.dll are both in your steam install directory properly, and the SFSE mods then live under them in the SFSE\Plugins folder. Then make sure you have SFSE_Loader in the Run dropdown menu selected in MO2, not Starfield.exe)
      4. Create two files ourselves.
(Check the Puzzle Piece button at the top of MO2 to ensure your correct MO2 Profile ini is changed, not the one in steamapps or My Games) (the "second file" in this point doesnt really matter)

So if those 4 things are right, you should be ready to mod. After that its just a matter of what type of mod you are trying to use. Your on Steam using the latest patch, latest SFSE, and only 3 mods which all function the same way effectively and dont conflict in any way, so it shouldnt be any weird business.

It can get hard on the brain looking at the same things over and over. Might be beneficial to walk it off and refresh, take a look again with new perspective and it might be the first thing you see.

Yes, all of that was done, and it didn't work BUT THEN, I deleted it all and went back to manually, it still didn't work, THEN I said f*#@ it and added all the lines into the base Starfield.ini, making sure to type them all out letter for letter and then IT WORKED, EVERY MOD WORKED. Of course when the next update rolls around the ini will be updated and overwritten so I then went back just copies the base ini and renamed it then deleted all the base ini stuff and left the custom ini stuff annnnd It didn't work, game just won't read the custom ini, only seem to work on the base game ini. Weird as hell. But this might help others so I'll updated.

Oh it may have been invisible characters in your ini then. If you get Notepad++ there is a button Show Hidden Characters in the toolbar (looks like some sort of music clef, or a reverse P). Might save you a bit of time if you run into issues with the ini or bat scripts later!

I believe it was yes, should really get notepad ++ again. But still not sure why it won't read the StarfieldCustom.ini, oh well, a jerry-rigged fix works for now.

    Wonderful post.

I'm a software engineer but new to Bethesda modding.
I can't seem to find a basic guide on how to create mods for Starfield and would love to start making some.

For example, with enabling loosing file loading, it seems Starfield just automatically loads the Data folder and overwrites its settings and files.
Now I see that mods just drop media and config files in the Data folder, example "data/interface/some.swf or some.ini".

    My main questions are:
    1. Do I need software to edit .SWF files and are those what I will be working with until the new Creation Engine?
    2. If there is a file let's say "some.ini" in data/interface and has "[Container] fXOffset 30.0" typed inside, what's handling this to change the settings in the game?
    3. Is there any way to edit and view the changes live in game, ex. question 2, or do you have to restart the game every time? I tried console commands but they cannot find anything in those folders.
    4. Is there a universal list or a way to gather all the settings that aren't in the main section of the game that say Bethini displays?

    Appreciate your help.

It seems loose file loading is populating the config options from the .swf files.
Don't think there is any way to update these live but if there is I would love to know.

      Here is a WIP resource:
      https://www.reddit.com/user/LeastDegenAzuraEnjyr/comments/16mk6zx/making_mods_without_creation_kit_some/

This may help with live updates but im not sure: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/4280

All the mods Ive made were simple .dds texture edits or bat scripts. .nif/.swf/.esp creation is a bit beyond what Ive done so far but there is info out there!

Console Command Runner might be useful for deploying your idea as well: https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/2740

Also this discord is very active and has lots of helpful folks! https://discord.gg/starfieldmodding
