MODS NOW LOADED FROM ROOT NOT DOCUMENTS! Thanks to kevinsmith1977 all credit goes to him download and endorse!
People who are new to modding I left the starfieldcustom.ini for the ones who would just like to drag and drop the ini in your my games/starfield folder has lots of little things added that will bring more immersion to the game. Including photo mode folder change to "Photos" and controller ramp up speed for walking/jogging to be a tad slower, plus more! Works out of the box for anyone who does not at all want to open the Starfieldcustom.ini due to not understanding it all.
Anything that makes the custom ini smoother or better performance or qol features leave a post, the community of modders have worked together to get THIS far lets keep it up!
Please do not post about alternate methods unless you read the bio. Lots of people are new to modding, EVERYONE is new to Starfield modding. This was made ONLY for the people having trouble or are confused to the new way to add mods or ini not working. Ground Zero if you will for everyone.
With that this StarfieldCustom.ini was not made for people who have a working ini already either in ROOT or Documents folder. Nor made for how to make your own ini unless you are needing to copy already made custom ini to a new one. It exactly WHY this troubleshoot post is already needed for Starfield. Currently there is lots of info on how to mod the game. Currently a lot of that info is not working for a lot of people. As a modding community it is important to make modding easy to understand for everyone the simpler the better! Vortex did not come this far only for the community to have overly complicated ways of getting started. Vortex is still catching up to what people now know about where mods go, file structure etc. In a few weeks everything will work as easy as installing a collection for Skyrim. For now people who are new will have to do SOME manual moving of files and clerical work to make sure Data is set up correctly in your Documents/My Games/Starfield folder. The ini was made for people impatient and just want the mods they downloaded to WORK without opening the ini or messing with it.
are u telling me there is a secret data folders in documents and all the mods i dropped into game folder data is wrong? yet another reason why this is a 3/10 game
DONT WORRY EASSSSSSSY FIX! 1.) This method is full proof but slower. If youre using Vortex like me I simply download the mod to stay updated. Disable not uninstall all mods/install the mod DONT enable yet. Open up mod staging folder in vortex, double click the mod, copy Data part of mod to C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield you will already have a Data folder this is where photo mode photos are stored. Copying the data folder from the mod will not overwrite anything it only has usually textures which has its own file structure.
2.) Dont wanna do that? This method works but you may want to delete vortex link files once copied over. Install all mods and enable. Then when you've installed all mods open your ROOT folder where .exe is located. Open Data, Copy Textures and anything else that has been modded (for me hud stuff so I will also copy interface) head over to C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield open Data paste textures (and interface) files into Data folder of C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield
3.) My method is download a mod, Install mod, Open mod staging folder, check for correct file strucutre (should only be data you may have to click a few times for some mod authors not knowing this yet but there will always be a data folder in the downloaded mod), copy DATA from mod to DATA in C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield. Then enable mod if desired.
I stay organized and then enable all mods and set my vortex to only enabled updates are daily for most mods right now. I do not enable the mods with vortex to get the mod to work Starfield does not read loose file mods in ROOT folder yet... This only applies to mods that use Data for mod if you use SFSE or a BAT mod install through vortex and all should work! .txt mods and SFSE mods DO NOT go into Documents folder, ALWAYS ROOT.
In Skyrim and Fallout most mods go into the ROOT folder where the .exe is located. Starfield uses this same idea for folder structure using the Data folder except it goes into the data folder in C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield. This is where all Bethesda games save your gamesaves (you can find the folder EASILY by clicking Documents then My Games then Starfield) also where preferences get saved like changes you make in settings or display. StarfieldCustom is where you can add other options for display as well as mods and lots more. Its pretty annoying being what im used to with Skyrim, but I have it figured out for now.
So what you're saying is that you're a bitter, joyless person who needs things handed directly to them with no effort or thought required. Man, that sucks.
I don't think blaming the game because you're new to modding is really a fair assessment. This is a very normal way for games to be set up. It's *annoying*, sure. But many steam games have files both within the steamapps folder and the documents folder. Editing .ini files is a very common experience.
I am a super dumb-dumb when it comes to this but after reading the instructions on your description page I think I can explain what you are doing logically. I think something that is missing from your description is the WHY they have to use an existing ini file and just edit it while still preserving the original file.
1. All the posts I've been reading have been telling me to create a text file StarfieldCustom and then just slap ini on the end instead of txt. This won't work for some(most?) people because just changing the extension does not convince your computer it's not a text file anymore.
2. What this epic person is telling you to do is to COPY an existing ini file (the StarfieldPrefs.ini) onto your desktop so you can edit it. It already is recognized as an ini file by your computer so you are going to change the name of the copy and also change it's guts, LEAVE the original StarfieldPrefs file there. Your just cloning it for now to fool your computer.
3. Rename the newly copied StarfieldPrefs on the desktop to: "StarfieldCustom" do not add ini to the end if it wasn't already visible. You can toggle whether to see file extensions or not, so if it wasn't there when you copied the file, don't re-add it!
4. Now delete the content inside the file on the desktop you just edited, and replace it with the coding this modder provided in the download. It is now a brand new unique file! New name and new coding.
5. Finally, put that file you edited back into the C:\Users\your name\Documents\My Games\Starfield folder. Now you should have the original StarfieldPrefs.ini AND the new StarfieldCustom.ini snuggled up with it.
6. Pat yourself on the back. You did it. Now go have fun using a modmanager to download mods. Be aware that the game has only been out a few days, so mods will be significantly improved if you wait a little while ;)
StarfieldCustom.ini is the first step to adding mods. I left that out for the people who made it that far. Lots of people create a text file and it works! For me not so much. I finally just copied all the text into a copied StarfieldPrefs.ini saved it, renamed it to StarfieldCustm. Glory it worked all my black color weapons and suits worked! The ini I uploaded is that ini for anyone having the same problem.
Larger Ship Size ESMNo Ship Size Limit CCR Ship Builder Unrestrcited Any one of these, one requires plugins.txt, one requires Console Command Runner (new one), one is just a console command. All do the same thing pick one I would also look for a ship camera mod zoomed out if going with giant ships. The problem with large ships is you can only see the ship while in space it will be to big for the camera and will sometimes be impossible to unboard the ship on landing pads in cities.
So I am on the Game Pass version and when I go into the custonini file and add a 1 to the line bInvalidateOlderFiles=0 Starfield will not start. It loads up and then on the last screen with the game info, it just sets there and the circle in the loser right continues to run and the game will not start. If I leave bInvalidateOlderFiles=0 at zero the game starts just fine.
Could simply be gamepass version is missing something needed for the way files work. Try Gamepass Ultra Immersion INI Loader maybe or sometimes mods that are gamepass friendly have an ini with it in optional could help not 100% sure.
Your ini has an invisible character. Unbelievable, out of 17k downloads, I'm the only one who noticed it. Fix it, many people are already blaming other modders, when it was caused by your ini.
Nice not sure where so maybe some insight? Words are only helpful if you provide some evidence otherwise you're not being helpful. Anyone can complain only some can use their brain :)
Nope this example you provided seems to only be affecting you. Not sure what you did wrong could be the program you're using to open file. All ini i provided do not have this example. Sometimes nexus downloads files partially or corrupted. Try downloading manually and see if you still have that problem. If you read all the comments seems as though yes you're the only one who has had this happen. Even when I download all the files I have no invisible characters. Do you use the default notepad that comes with windows or a different program?
Nope this example you provided seems to only be affecting you
Nope, it's you who doesn't know how to see invisible characters. The fact that you still haven't figured it out shows that you haven't even tried to search on Google to find out how to see invisible characters. And no, If the file were corrupted, you wouldn't even be able to extract it.
You beautiful starborn I could kiss you. I tried for hours to get some mods working that require this invalid string in the custom.ini and I went mad at the end. Now those mods are working fine. May the Unity bless you and the paths you may travel.

Yes, I have SFSE and sfse_loader.exe both installed. As well as I installed both BakaAchievementEnabler.dll and SFPluginsTxtEnabler.dll.
Would you please help me increase the Ship Builder of X and Y to 1000 meters and Z to 500 meters, please?
