This mod gives crab pot loot quality based on your fishing skill and perks and adds unique effects to different kinds of bait. It started out as a very simple mod made by request for Gargash1337, as they got inspired by a similar feature for tappers, berry bushes and mushrooms in the mushroom cave in my mod Forage Fantasy.

Fun fact: Did you know that the Stardew Valley 1.6 update added two bait effects to crab pots? One of them is sadly currently bugged:
  • if you use deluxe bait, the resulting item will have silver quality
  • if you use wild bait, the resulting item has a 25% chance to be duplicated (bugged and not working)
This mod fixes that and expands on this concept.



Almost all of these features are configurable in the config:

Crab pot quality:
  • crab pots now have quality based on your fishing skill and perks
  • the quality of the item depends on the owner of the crab pot, not the harvester
  • the formula for normal to gold quality is the same as for foraging goods, just with fishing skill
  • if you have either Mariner or Luremaster all your loot (except trash) will be iridium quality
  • trash will always be normal quality

Special bait effects:
  • non default bait can add a multiplier to the quality calculation
  • non default bait can add a chance to duplicate the loot (stacks multiplicatively with other duplication chances)
  • non default bait can have a chance to transform the loot into a custom item (it can even get duplicated afterwards)

Deluxe Bait
  • quality modifier: 50%

Wild Bait
  • quality modifier: 50%
  • duplication chance: 25%

Magic Bait
  • quality modifier: 50%
  • special item chance: 30%
  • special item: Rainbow Shell

Magnet Bait
  • quality modifier: -50%
  • special item chance: 15%
  • special item: Artifact Trove

Challenge Bait
  • quality modifier: 50%
  • duplication chance: 50%




Because I made the quality of the loot depend on the owner of the crab pot, rather than the harvester, it works in multiplayer even if you are not the host and it's completely compatible with automatic pickup mods like 'Automate' and 'Joy Of Efficiency' (as you can see in the screenshot I was testing it on the docks).


Requirements:
SMAPI: I built version 2.0.1 of this mod based on version 4.0.4. It should be compatible with a few future versions and a few prior version. You can get the latest version of SMAPI here.


Installation:
Install SMAPI. Then extract the content of the downloaded zip file into the SMAPI mods folder and start the game via the SMAPI launcher or Steam if you have set the launch option for SMAPI in Steam.


Updating: 
Simply delete the prior version and install the new one.


Uninstallation:
You can delete this mod from your mods folder at any time to remove the features.
