Hana's Stardew Valley Gender Neutrality Mod

The goal of this mod is to change dialogues directed at the player to be gender neutral and to remove certain gender specific parts of the game. This should allow you to play through the game without being gendered. This mod is made specifically for those of us who wish to play through the game as a gender neutral / nonbinary character. This mod is for Stardew Valley  v1.3+

Another quick note: My mod currently does not change/remove all homophobic/heteronormative/ciscentric content but there is a great mod by Isilily that does if you need it! It is called No More Dialogue Differences and I highly recommend it! (My mod is going to include many of these changes at a later date but does not yet incorporate them!)

Content Patcher Update!

I recently made the leap to bring this mod into Content Patcher! Please note that this has caused a few minor changes (no worries, all good things!). Most importantly how the mod is installed and the ability to toggle on/off certain content. All that being said I will still leave up the old XNB style mods but I discourage you from using these and will probably no longer update them (read: use at your own risk!).

Installation (Content Patcher)

The new installation method is rather simple, just follow these steps!
  1. Install the latest version of SMAPI.
  2. Install the latest version of Content Patcher.
  3. Download this mod and unzip it into Stardew Valley/Mods.
  4. Run the game using SMAPI.

Toggling Content

  1. To toggle content on/off you must first run the game once with both Content Patcher and Gender Neutrality Mod installed.
  2. Once you have run the game once a "config.json" file should appear in Stardew Valley/Mods/[CP] Gender Neutrality Mod
  3. When you open the "config.json" file you will see three options:
  • FixBathHouse - This changes the bath house, allowing you to enter and exit either door. If you have a another mod the replaces the bathhouse and you prefer to use it instead change this value to "false".
  • ReplaceGenderSymbols - This changes the gender symbols to a 1 and a 2 in the character creation menu and any menu that uses Stardew Valley's default gender symbols. If you want the normal gender symbols to stay change this value to "false".
  • FixDialogues - This is the meat of the mod it changes all NPC dialogue to use gender neutral language. I've included this because I got a few requests to make this mod toggle-able. If you want to turn off the gender neutral dialogue change this value to "false".

What This Mod Does

  • Changes the dialogue of all the characters to have them use gender neutral terms to refer to you.
  • Removes the gender symbols in the character creation menu, allowing you to simply choose between body types with a 1 or a 2.
  • Allows you to enter either door at the Spa.
  • Changes Grandpa's Dialogue in the Intro!
  • Changes the Marriage Dialogue!

Installation (XNB Mod)
I highly discourage you from using the XNB version of the mod and will provide only limited support for it. If you can, please use the Content Patcher version instead!

If you know how to install XNB Mods you can ignore this section.
FOR MAC USERS: I have been informed that you may need to replace each file individually to make this mod work, so please keep that in mind!

  1. Find the folder you downloaded Stardew Valley to. (Most likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley) and make a backup.
  2. Download the mod and Extract the .zip file.
  3. Drop the "Content" folder from this mod's folder into the Stardew Valley folder from step 1 and Merge and Replace the files when prompted.
  4. Start Stardew Valley and enjoy the mod!

Final Notes

As always, if you find anything that I missed and still refers to you in a gendered way (or any other bugs) please leave me a comment and tell me where you found it. I will do my best to fix it as soon as possible!
In addition if anyone needs it this is the github for the Content Patcher version: GitHub (somewhat out of date)
