This instantly reminded me of an episode of Courage the Cowardly Dog, when some eggplants came to life ahah.
Also, just a thought - this could pair really well with Lunar Disturbances, when there's a blood moon. :) Personally I'd prefer it if they only spawned at such a time (or maybe Halloween?), so that the farm remains a place to relax on most days. Still, this looks too cool to not at least try out. This game could always use new enemies.
Thanks! I'll combine this with the idea below to make a range of configuration options for how often the Cropbeasts can spawn. Look for them in a future version.
What's the chance of the cropbeasts appearing? And have you thought about making it configurable? i think they could be a nice extra event like the fairy or the witch, but not something i would like for to happen every day.
Currently, if the necessary conditions for cropbeasts to spawn are met on a given day, no random chance is really factored into whether any will spawn or not on a given day. Only the maximum number of spawns in a day is configurable. The original idea was to match the way monster spawning works on the Wilderness Farm. This is a great idea for an alternate approach, however, and I will definitely add this configuration option in a future version. Thank you!
I love this mod! It adds a lot of interest, not to mention laughter. My daughter and I love watching to see if the witch will show up, and which crops will be affected. Some days I find it's past noon before I get on with my work, but that's fine with me! I have a question, though. Are you planning on adding flowerbeasts? I'd love to see that, especially as I raise a lot of flowers. Though admittedly that could cause problems with beehives... unless it was possible to have a safe zone within so many spaces of a hive (like with the wicked statue)?
I'm so glad you and your daughter are enjoying the mod! I considered adding flowerbeasts as part of the spring modding event - I have a herbalist/florist playthrough going myself - but I wound up making the Flower Bombs mod instead. You're right to point out that it would need a Bee House safe zone. I'll bump the flowerbeasts feature up on my modding agenda. Look for them in a future version!
Great mod! I just wanted to ask, is this mod compatible with other mods that add new crops to the game? Most notably the PPJA mods? Thanks again for your time, I look forward to seeing what's in store for your mods in the near future
Thank you! Cropbeasts offers a method for custom crops to be added, but it's intended to be used by the modders making those crops. It's also rather obtuse at present. In a future version, I plan to simplify that support and, if the PPJA team allows, offer a premade content pack for some of the PPJA crops to become beasts. For now, Cropbeasts will simply skip over any custom crops that it hasn't been set up to recognize.
Hi! I tried this mod with a newly made file for testing and noticed that my game lagged a bit when the crops turned into beasts. I tested this with the bean crop. I also got a lot of errors from smapi:
Thanks for the log! It looks like you ran into a rare situation where a sound tried to start again before it had finished. I've made a fix for this that will be included in the next version of the mod.
This mod has brought some great entertainment and given me a good reason to use the wilderness farm!
I was freaking out over the witch flying by first thing in the morning and then my distant forgotten rice shoot starts shooting me. It increased my mood and partially watered my crops. Thank you for the laugh and added difficulty!
Excellent idea! Just wanted to thank you for such an interesting mod!
However, I have run into a problem. I'm working off an old save with SVE Immersive Farm installed (with spawn on all farms enabled) and at the start of the day, my cropbeasts don't spawn.
I have some parsnips and unmilled rice ready to harvest and they don't seem to do anything, even after I fiddled with the configs. However, when I entered spawn_cropbeast the mod works just fine.
For reference, all my crops were planted before installing the mod, but so far nothing seems to be spawning at the start of my days.
Do you have at least 16 crops on the farm? There's a restriction that prevents cropbeast spawns when fewer crops are present, mirroring the way crows work in the base game.
I'm glad it's working now. No, crops that can be harvested repeatedly will remain in place, and their next harvest will ripen at the usual time. Only their current harvest will transform into the beast.
Hi. Well that shouldn't happen! Cropbeasts spawn from your crops, so they should never spawn more than a tile away from where the crop was planted. Were the crop(s) very near one of the borders already, such as on the east edge? Which kind of crop(s) did this?
Ah. Well Kale turns into a Leafbeast, which can fly, so it could have flown off the edge of the farm temporarily (like monsters can do in the mines). It should turn around and head in your direction again eventually, though. Did you see the transformation sequence (screen flash, crop shaking, crop levitating, magical puff of color)? If not, this could be a bug with the tracking arrows pointing to something that isn't actually a cropbeast.
I saw the witch and her flyby curse-casting, but other than the flash of light I didn’t see any other effects. I heard various sounds that I assume attribute to the transformation, though.
Would it be worth noting that all of my crops were still a day or two old when this happened?
A day or two old as in since you'd planted them, and they weren't actually ready for harvest yet? Strange. Cropbeasts only spawn from crops that are ready for harvest (or so I thought). It's possible that your farm has some old or invalid crops sitting outside the normal boundaries. Did you switch to IF2R (the SVE farm map) from one of the vanilla maps or a different custom map within this save? If so, there could be something unusual left behind.
In that case I'll need to dig through the log for more details. Could you do the following? 1. Load your save. 2. In the SMAPI console, type spawn_cropbeast and press Enter. 3. Wait for the cropbeast to spawn. If it doesn't exhibit this bug, try step 2 again until one of them does. 4. Exit to Title or Exit to Desktop without sleeping/saving. 5. Upload your log to https://smapi.io/log/ (following the instructions there). 6. Share the link from that site here. Thanks!
I’ve found the cropbeast! It was actually a hidden giant cauliflower that was hiding in some hard to reach place in my farm. I had to cheat in some items to even get to it. Sorry for taking up your time.

Looking forward to the update! <3

I have one more question though. Would turning into a cropbeast affect the harvest of multi-harvest crops like strawberries or ancient fruit?
I turned high contrast and the directional arrows on and they all pointed towards something outside of where I could reach.
Would it be worth noting that all of my crops were still a day or two old when this happened?
