I really appreciate you making this mod! I personally wouldn't use this mod because I enjoy seeing his character develop in the vanilla, but I think it's really nice to give people the option of changing the dialogue to make their playing experience less stessful. That's what mods are for; changing things for an individiual's own comfort and taste, and I'm sorry some people are being antagonistic about a completely optional add-on.
Aw I really like these dialogue changes. I read through the comments and they seem to be mostly complaining because 'uwu he doesn't have growth now he's so one dimensional but I read through the changes and they really, really seem to give him a new edge and make his changing from a grumpy, sour old man with a dark outlook into someone hopeful for the future, which is always nice. Also as a disabled person myself - I really AM sick of the 'I hate my disability!' thing in media. Yeah I DO hate being disabled but it's my body and I am learning to live with it; it would be nice to see more people not treating disabilities as bizarre or marks of villainy (cough superhero movies). Anyway IDK if I can use this with Stardew Expanded but I am going to DL and endorse anyway.
(Also as an aside idk if you know abt this or want to, but you can hide comments so you stop having to see the rude as hell ones that waste ur time. Honestly has been a godsend feature for me very often.)
Heya!! Idk really how to use nexus or anything but I use SVE, and it looks like the mod does not work with SVE -- I don't know for sure though, since I could have downloaded it wrong.
there's no such phobia, tbh. google "phobia" also, just criticism or finding it weird, is no true hate, which you may think about with this all and ableism..... it's towards himself that he doesn't like it, as he has a trauma from the past, and gets reminded of it
i don't say you may not make, have or use such mod, i don't care, just wanted to express my opinion about it good day, and hope people who dislike or hate it, will be happy with this mod
words are all made by people. every word can be real if people use it. "phobia" is a looser term now, as language changes all the time. it doesn't just mean literal fear of something, it means aversion to/misunderstanding of/anxiety over. homophobia absolutely exists in the sociological sense. words can have multiple senses/uses, for phobia it can be both psychological fear OR sociological hatred, disgust, or fear of what you dont understand. if people truly understood gay people, no one would be homophobic. and it may be nice to have the canon dialogue where George goes on a journey through understanding, but some people may just want the game to be relaxing and not have to be reminded about their own homophobic relatives while trying to de-stress
LorSnore hit the nail on the head with "some people may just want the game to be relaxing and not have to be reminded about their own homophobic relatives while trying to de-stress". If you want to play a game in which homophobia and ableism is present, go ahead, don't download the mod and instead just play the vanilla game. If on the other hand you'd rather not encounter homophobia and/or ableism in an otherwise prejudice-free game, this mod does exactly that.
i didn't say anything about the mod being bad, just gave my opinion about it
ableism is basically "disability discrimination", and george doesn't discriminate against himself for having disabilities
then phobia's are extreme versions of fear, not regular fear, so that'd mean that someone who's suffering from "homophobia" would be like "no, please, keep them away from me!! HEEEEELP!!!!" or something similar not regular hate, which in this case, isn't there, it's just "i didn't know i could be gay" in SDV, and some "i didn't expect it"
you 2 get defensive, while i just criticised those 2 parts
i posted something else, but seems it never showed up here, but here i have a shorter reply about this
oh well, i guess i couldn't expect anything else from a society that uses these words so loosely and easily
"if people truly understood gay people, noone would be homophobic" noone understands it for 100% if they are not, and vice versa, too. it's normal you don't understand the feelings of someone else, even if both are straight or gay nowadays it's being used if you don't understand gay people... so i'm one too? do we have "straightphobes" too?
homophobia is a pretty commonly used word, I find it hard to believe that this is the first time you've seen it used in this context. Truly nitpicking at it's finest.
it's far from the first time i've seen it, but a phobia is about fear, not just hate, which it isn't George is simply not used to it, like he'd complain about hardrock and metal music
people make it worse than it is, and that's how it is going on for years now, even if you are just criticising 1 gay person, or if you simply don't like gay stuff like i don't like seeing 2 guys kiss (or more), is that "homophobic" or just "different preferences"? i'd say the latter, as it's like that
i know someone who hates gay people in general, and i don't call him "homophobe" but "gayhater" that's what it is, he's not scared of them, he just hates them (unless he just has a bigt mouth, but then it's also not a phobia)
go english wikipedia, search "phobia", and there it'll explain it also says that there are "phobia's" <-- like that, meaning it's not officia;l phobia's
George may not hate gayness, and could just not understand it no phobia, just a simple dislike or less i've been called homophobe for not liking to see to gay guys kissing or such Blaire White on youtube is trans, has been called homophobe and transphobe for going against CERTAIN LGBT actions Bliare White is a transperson
it's as simple as this: if someone calls another homophobe, it's most likely because they don't like certain gay things that's all people shouldn't feel bad about people not liking what they do like, it's the same with fanboys, and ends up with an insult like "hater" or "phobe"(for some reason), while it's either just disinterest or dislike of the idea
and the "phobia can be because one doesn't understand" part ... it's not as simple, phobias are not just because of some fear, phobias are fear on a certain level
and ableism means you look down on someone because of their disability, NOT disliking a certain disability can't a man not even dislike his own disabilities anymore? that's what i think about that
it seems this community is filled with people who want this game to be their own little perfect dreamworld this is a reason why i won't do much with the community, i'll just play around in SDV on my own
of course i accept this mod, i just don't get why people are so very serious about people's personalities this time it's George (and Penny's i've seen, too), but in reallife it'll be many more people i only questioned and criticised the mod, did NOT say that people should live without it, or that it's bad
peaceful community, yet as flammable as gas 1 different opinion = BOOM, plenty of defenders NOT reading anymore, just blindly shutting people up
too bad, i was hoping for at least ONE good community without flammable people like this singleplayer it'll be (again) have a nice time
1. No one said that you said the mod was bad, they are aware you are giving an opinion, but if you are going to do that on a public platform, it is natural for people to express their thoughts on your opinion as well.
2. The ableism mentioned within the mod description is (I think) referring to how the characters in game react to George, not necessarily just his attittude towards his disability. To summarise, the characters in-game tend to offer unsolicited help to George without considering his feelings or input. While this may be realistic, some people who play the game for relaxation may not want to be reminded of this (like what LorSnore explained), so this mod is an option to those players.
3. You accuse others of not reading your words properly and attempting to shut you up, but no one in this comment thread has done that? They are just providing explanations, pretty neutral ones at that. There wasn't any inflamatory or harsh language used by your detractors (at least imo). Please stop playing the victim lmao.
4. It's pretty naive to expect any large community to be entirely peaceful. Where there are people, there will be chaos. Most of us just ignore the parts we don't like and enjoy the ones we do.
Tl;dr, if you want to be free to express your opinions publicly, be prepared to receive opinions on your opinions as well
Wow, this topic was dead a long time ago. I'm capable of typing it better, so these old posts aren't who i am now.
I learned a lot, and still think that it's weird how people call it a phobia. It still is no phobia, and using the word like this will make simple minded people go against people with actual phobias.
But too many people try to be offended by stuff that's not perfect to minority groups, even when it's not about hate, but merely misunderstanding or just not understanding at all. George has that, and i don't think in his old days, he needs to be changed. People have flaws, and that's what makes us more special.
Changing everything to make a small group happy, will only make them mentally weaker, and in this world, you NEED to be strong, really. Look at how people always attack others who don't mean any harm, over some words that are being used for decades, if not centuries. This mod will not change the real life situation at all, and if people keep complaining in reallife, those who don't understand why these people are so upset over something the rest doesn't use as anything offensive, people will just avoid ALL people with actual problems, instead of some nitpicking on words and such.
Heck, if a straight cis male doesn't wanna date trans people or gay men, they get called such trans and homophobe. These people getting called these illogical names (both due to it not being about fear, and them not hating such people) will only distance themselves further from these minority groups, and some will build up hate against them, because of the people talking in their names for misunderstood reasons (or just to hate on others, cuz they're protected under the name of "trying to stand up for victims").
I heard there were a lot of bad comments on this mod on Twitter, and that's a result from people complaining about wanting a perfect world. Npot many actually explain how trans and gay being work, so those who don't know, won't learn, as they wanna avoid being attacked for wrong reasons. If you get attacked a lot, you tend to build a resistance, and that's what many do, and some are going far by hating on actual victims.
I hope i cleared up my thoughts in better words/sentences, as people really need to learn the difference between someone hating lgbt people for being such, and just feeling different about certain details. Trying to make it a perfect world, will only cause more confusion and makes more people fight others for the wrong reasons... from both sides.
I never said people may not want such perfect world, but was criticizing how people are acting, as it's not doing any good, and just makes matters worse. I've changed since my last reply here, and became open to dating(for serious purpose, including marriage and such so no fetish or such) trans women(trans men, too, if feminine enough) and femboys(?... like feminine men, using the word how it's made, except for "boy", it'd be "man", cuz no underaged dating for me, of course). For me, they'd just need to be very feminine. that's what i get attracted to. But people still going with this phobia talk, and trying to force everyone to accept AND be part of "lgbt feelings", is making the hate grow more.
I wish people would just talk, and not getting triggered over some opinions like "I just think it's disgusting when 2 guys kiss", cuz whether you get angry or not, it won't help anyone, while getting angry about it, only makes the ones not hating yet, hate. You won't need to live with such people... if so, not forever, so try not to be hostile about different feelings and misunderstandings. Glad at least SOME people who are gay or trans have changed, and are now saying the same thing.
And the so called ableism part wasn't something ableist, and makes people who try to help, sound bad. While before, you'd only tell her to let him cool off, which would be a good thing. I've seen videos with clips of people in America getting hated on, just for offering a person having a harder time, some help. Trying to be nice, sounds bad now, and this world really needs some happiness and less hate on people trying to be good to others. This discourages them to do so, while the text changing from the old version to something like "He's having a hard time with it, i'm sure he's still being grateful.", as it's just harder for him to show his true feelings about it, but isn't really angry about a person helping him.
Anything i typed in a way that makes you doubt my feelings that i mentioned? Or anything one of us might misunderstand here? I mean it, just tell me, so i can explain. No hate.
Just remember, people not being perfect towards others, doesn;'t mean they're being or trying to be bad or hateful to them. In my younger years, people slowly started to accept lgbt people, but since the rise of the hostile trans activists, it turned around, and often got even worse than ever before. Which is why i'm trying to discuss this, so some MIGHT change the ways they fight for lgbt people. I'm worried about lgbt people, too, while many of the activists just do whatever they want, and hurt others, even lgbt people themselves.
Have a nice day. Hope i didn't sound too hostile before.
i love this mod sm it's a must for me, but when i tried to download it again after getting a new computer, vortex says that it's an empty archive? i feel like i might have encountered this problem before, but because this mod is an essential i had it in my game for so long lmao
Maual download, you need to find Stardews mod folder and then just plop in the file. It's actually easier to do as most SDV mods don't gel with Vortex for some reason.
You literally just took his character and threw it in the garbage. He's not you, he's a character who's annoyed by the fact he is disabled, and, as a stereotype to old-timers, is homophobic. As time goes on and you actually make an effort to get to know him, he changes. You might as well take out Alex's sexism, and Hayley's shallowness, and Pam's alcoholism, and Shane's depression, shall I go on?
The characters have flaws. It's not supposed to be a perfect sunny world. When you first meet character's you have a basic impression, then when you get to know them, they become more in-depth. That's how people work.
if a character's enter substance relies on homophobia maybe it's okay for people trying to enjoy themselves who don't want to deal with homophobia to put said character in the trash. And what would be wrong with all the other things? Maybe someone is a struggling alcoholic trying to enjoy they're free time playing Stardew and pam's alcoholism makes them uncomfortable. So they get a mod that changes it so Pam is someone who might have overcome their addiction, and so leaves a better impact on the player.
They are characters, not people. Characters are TOOLS, some people want the tools to not tear them down.
Real people play Stardew Valley, and sometimes real people have experienced things that are represented in this game and having it brought up makes the game less fun. Why trash what someone did to make the game more enjoyable for themself? Is that not the purpose of modding?
...My guy, George had exactly one line about not understanding gay relationships. It wasn't a defining part of his character it was an offhand comment.
As to the Wheelchair Talk: they just made it more balanced, he's still frustrated he can't reach s*** & that sand gets in his wheels. But he also comments as to his gratitude to be alive & about how much the chair also helps him.
Also alcoholism and depression aren't character flaws, their medical conditions. Casual homophobia is not a medical condition regardless of age and I know at least a dozen old timers who'd kick your ass if you suggested otherwise.
And the old saying: 'don't like, don't download. mods are about tailoring the game in every way imaginable there is no 'wrong' way to do it' I said this on the Christian Conversion mod (repeatedly) and I'm saying it here.
Oh wow, I'm really happy to come across this! I've never married Alex as a male character so I never came across the homophobia, but Penny's 2-heart event especially always bugged me so much. Thank you!
