for some reason, i can't get either version to work now... but i did some digging around, and compared the code to DIY pets (https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/4764), and figured out what to do until an official update happens!
open the content.json for this mod. find the following lines: "Action": "Load", "Target": "Animals/cat", and replace those lines with these ones: "LogName": "Cat", "Action": "EditImage", "PatchMode": "Replace", "Target": "Animals/cat",
of course, if you want to replace any of the others, you can instead put Animals/cat1 or Animals/cat2 in the Target field!
... i'm not sure how to fix the thing where marnie repeats the first two lines of the "here's your pet" cutscene. but! at least the weird cat is there!

The sweater. I can't even.
One suggestion, no mods came up when i searched "possum" , maybe add it to the title of the mod?
Also in 1.4, I had chosen the grey cat, so I just changed "Target": "Animals/cat", to "Target": "Animals/cat1", in the .json file to make it work.
