In case anyone else is having this issue - replacing the cat.xnb file will only work if you started your game with the first cat on the starter menu, the tabby cat. If you originally set it as the grey one, rename it cat2 and replace that one, and the same for if you chose the orange one, cat3. Worked fine for me once I figured that out!
why does it not work for me? I put it in the animal files replaced it then played the game. I looked at my cat and it was still the normal cat. and I know that I'm doing this right because I replaced the xnb file of my horse and it changed so why doesn't this one work?
