I think this is a nice addition to the game. Only suggestion I have, unsolicited as it is, is that you could add a config (Perhaps via GMCM?) to change the level at which they become available.
I personally changed the files to only allow crafting the books at level 10, since I think this is a nice way to balance it for MP and I am also using the mod Prestige Skills (With the unofficial update), so making it available at the final level adds a faster way to progress after having "prestiged" once.
So you gain 750xp from kill and 1250xp from the book in total.

Good idea but poor balancing (like you said) because your current costs are at Cheat level that instead anyone can install CJB Item Spawner to get the books totally for free. To balance, ingredients need to be either harder to obtain or need massive amounts of them so to justify the cost instead of blatantly cheating the item in spawner route.
Example: Your image shows 1 any fish + 1 bait + 1 cloth = 1 Rare Book. I'd rather suggest it will be; Bait n Bobber (1.5% drop chance for Lv10 Fishing, Wiki) = 100 any fish + 50 deluxe bait + 10 cloth or 5 iridium fish + 5 barbed hook + 10 cork bobber (check their cost at Wiki) so to somewhat balance it instead of cheating it. Thing is, you first need to calculate the time wasted trying to obtain the book by RNG Drop and try to lessen it (not more than 50% of playing time) but not make it a cheat nonetheless.
For another example, I use Gems to Prismatic Shards mod (same crafting route like yours) but I jacked up the prices via manual editing so that I don't feel it a cheat anymore.
The easiest way would be a config file so that everyone could configure it self. Additionally there could be, maybe three config presets (easy, balanced, hard) avaiable to choose from or make any own
I mean... if someone is using CJB Item Spawner (or one of CJBs other cheat mods), then you've already negated the ability for balance. If you're worried about money, just download CJB Cheats Menu and give yourself all the money you want.
Your comment/concern is like saying "I'm worried about someone breaking into my house" but the person you're worried about already has the key to the front door. And trying to balance it out by saying "make the ingredients harder to obtain or give more of them" is further negated by the "if they have CJB Item Spawner" statement.
hi!! i love this mod! however, i'm level 10 in every skill, but the only books i can craft are the mining one and the farming one. just wondering if i'm missing something or if this is a bug! thank you for this awesome mod <3
i encountered this same bug in my own testing, im not sure its fixable from my end. you might just have to debug them in the smapi console. the command is "debug craftingrecipe [book name]", the book names are "Bait And Bobber" for fishing, "Combat Quarterly" for combat, "Mining Monthly" for mining, "Stardew Valley Almanac" for farming, and "Woodcutter's Weekly" for foraging. you have to caps the first letter of every word, and include the spaces and the apostrophe in Woodcutter's. dont include the brackets.
