Will do! I have about half of the forearm crutch sprites done, mostly because figuring out the best way to handle certain movements is a little hard when I don't have any real way to reference it (fishing, using slingshots, opening the jar for Haley, or playing the harp with Abigail for example since both use two hands.) I'd love your opinion on what you'd think would be a good way to show it if you don't mind. The best thing I've been able to come up with for fishing is just having a chair magically appear for those few frames or just having the crutches next to the farmer? But I'm at a loss for what to do with the slingshots. I know canes aren't exactly the same, but I imagine I'd be running into a similar problem with those as well, so if you have any suggestions I'd be glad to hear them!
hey, hope you don't mind me jumping in! i think for a lot of these things you're mentioning re: crutches and canes, you may be overthinking it a bit. there's a lot you can still do with your hands and arms with the crutches still holding your forearms or with an elbow holding onto a cane.
to get into specifics--for fishing you could possibly have the sprite cast one-handed if you don't want them to still have the crutches on their arms? or have them sit, that's absolutely a valid option. same with the harp, that's something i think most of us mobility aid users would sit for, haha. re: opening the jar for haley, at least with forearm crutches you could totally still do that while the crutches are still there. i might have the sprite with a cane rest it against the counter for a minute. slingshots... that's the tough one. in reality, you probably wouldn't be able to use them with a cane. with forearm crutches you might be able to but you'd be holding it closer to waist height.
if you want some good reference, check out josh sundquist videos. he uses forearm crutches and, as a bonus, is hilarious.
I don't mind at all! I have literally no idea what I'm doing so I just try to think of what might be the least immersion-breaking, but it's hard for me to know if it works without any real life frame of reference. I think I might just have to try a few things for the slingshot, but it's good to know the magically appearing stool for fishing, the harp, and opening the jar isn't a bad idea 😭. I know there are some canes that can also convert into stools so I'll probably try making it look like those.
And thank you for the reference! I'm going to binge-watch his videos while I work now I think After I do those last few sprites I'll be posting the new beta version that utilizes the Fashion Sense mod, so there will be some basic customization options for both the wheelchair and crutches.
for a cane, if i need to use two hands i either rest it against my leg (and hope it doesnt fall lmao) or rest it against a wall or other solid object nearby. if its possible to do one handed though, ill do it one handed
it's been a while since I checked this comment (I lost my Stardew mojo for a while), since this comment I've moved to using a rollator for 99% of my outdoor time, but before that, I did as Vampir4318 does/did, and leaned my cane against my legs (and hoped it didn't fall as I use an acrylic cane), or a wall/other hard surface, or as a last resort, tell my partner/someone I trust to hold onto it for a few seconds while I lean on the wall/other hard surface, but I also became pretty adapt at doing things one handed too.
When fishing the magic chair is a great idea, as there are canes that turn into a chair (called Shooting Sticks), that could also be used for the slingshot. There's also "Tripod Seat Stick"s so the options are out there, it's just knowing the right names for researching them
Hey! Forearm crutch and cane user, for opening the jar; canes have wrist straps so possibly let the cane hang off the arm or put it on the counter: forearm crutches have the cuff which can hang off the arm. Same for the harp. I second letting the crutches and cane sit on the floor next to the farmer while fishing and have them pull out a chair, for slingshot I think also let the crutches and cane either hang off the arm or be put on the ground
Thank you so much for this mod, as a wheelchair user myself this makes me very happy. There are very few video games that allow you to play a wheelchair user and so this is really huge. It's hard to explain just how nice this is. I don't have much more to say, just wanted to thank you for this <33
before i say anything else i just want to say i love this so much. i may not be physically disabled myself, but i am so happy that this exists for others, especially as the only other mod i found when i searched randomly, only has the front sprite. with the commendations said, will this work with other fashion sense mods? im considering having my oc use a wheelchair, but because of the ~lore~, they wear this: [ https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/10837 ], and im worried it might overlap? im using the raincoat one if that helps.
It should! Normally, shirts are layered over the pants, but I've changed all the wheelchair pants in this mod to be layered over shirts so it shouldn't conflict with other shirts. As for the mod above, it might look odd with the cloak options considering they flow when moving, but you can choose how you layer accessories with the wheelchair if you want the cloak to be over the wheelchair? (1 being the top layer I think and everything else being beneath that). I'll have to check after I finish the crutch sprites. The hoods themselves are hats though, so they should work fine.
I use this mod too tbh, so I'll see about making a cloak pack when I have the time if it doesn't work. I don't currently use a mobility aid either, but the chronic illness parasite does have its claws in me so it might be a while before I actually have the spoons to do it 😅 If anyone else makes one in the meantime though, I'll be happy to link it on the mod page for others to find
Whoops! That's my bad. I meant to add a nose toggle in the generic mod config menu like seasonal outfits does, but I forgot. I'll post a bug fix this weekend.
Updated, but not yet fully tested so let me know if something isn't working right! I forgot how to do the toggle to filter then, but I added more options in the bodies section for nose/no nose options that should work.
There are still a few visual issues that I've been trying to fix where things aren't lining up correctly and the pants still move like you're running. I've been having a few close calls with health issues lately though so I might just upload what I have later today as a beta just because I don't want to keep you guys waiting forever.😭 The content patcher version is ready, but the ability to switch between using the wheelchair inside or outside is a little broken. My understanding is that the issue has to do with SMAPI and should be fixed in the next update so I can add that ability back then. I'd done a good amount of changes to replace the stairs with ramps and such, but 1.6 changed the maps so I'll have to redo those at some point as well.
Thanks for your concern! I just would have been so embarrassed if I never updated this mod because I got too sick from not having enough sugar and salt in me 😭 But it's all good for now and the Fashion Sense version is officially out!
Hi! I hope you're doing well! This is amazing work! It makes me so happy that someone is creating such a mod for one of my favorite games. As a young ambulatory support user, I am especially excited about your plans to add crutches and canes. Customizing my character to reflect my own experiences is one of my favorite aspects of gaming. I know several other disabled gamers, and I can't wait to tell them about this mod! I hope you keep going, and my words encourage you. Keep at it! I hope my words encourage you to keep going, and please remember to take care of yourself!
I loaded up a quick test file and was immediately in tears. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this. I never thought I'd be able to play as a diabled character in this type of game.
I don't know how realistic this would be to implement so it may be a pipe dream, but it would be soooo cool to do something like walking with a cane or crutches normally and change the horse to a wheelchair, to play as an ambulatory chair user!
I'm still working on adding a fashion sense version to smooth out some of the visual issues with the wheelchair and add more customization, but crutches and canes are next on the list!
As for the horse, I can definitely try to add an option to replace it with a wheelchair, but it might look a bit off because the position of the player is hardcoded on top of the horse and it might look like you're floating in the chair. I'll have to test it to see. (Hoverchair for fun? 🤔)
But even if I can't get the horse to work, the newer updates will have the ability to switch between sprite options whenever you'd like. It just might take a bit to load in when you switch it.
Once I get more sprites finished I can even see about making sprites automatically dynamic, so you can set your character to use a wheelchair outside, but use your cane inside or other combinations. Let me know what you think would be more accurate or helpful. I'd love to add as much customization as possible!
I honestly have no idea if it will work properly, but given that portrait mods can do indoor/outdoor variants of clothes, I feel like I should be able to do the same with the other sprites. I just have to figure out how to set it up!
Hey! Just thought I'd let you know that this is 100% possible with the Fashion Sense version. I'm not entirely sure how it works as I haven't looked into it myself, but LilietBorodina's Seasonal Farmer Looks gives you that ability as well as several other customization options for your farmer.
tracking this so I can use it once the fashion sense version comes out. POTS & Crohn's have made it so that I need a wheelchair to go out of the house for even so much as a quick shopping trip and I am struggling to cope, so hopefully something like this allows me to make some more peace with it as I save up for a chair <3
Currently waiting on a tilt table to test for POTS myself so I know it feels pretty rough sometimes. Sorry it took so long to update, but the Fashion Sense version is officially out now, so I hope it helps/helped you feel a little bit better.
Does this automatically give it to the player? I'm playing multi with a friend who's using this mod and I'd love to see her character in it but I don't need it for my own character
The content patcher version uploaded right now automatically gives it to all players.
But I'm currently working on a Fashion Sense version which I believe should give you the ability to see just her in the wheelchair as long as you both have it downloaded and she customized herself that way.
All the assets are done. I'm still just trying to figure out the coding bit which isn't exactly difficult, just a bit time-consuming. I expect things to settle down after this month is over though. So hopefully it won't be too much longer until I get out a beta version at the least. I think I almost have the basic coding template for the bodies finished, but after I'm done with that I just need to code the pants and it should be good to go.

While I don't currently use a wheelchair, It's an option I will have available to me in later years.
Looking forward to both canes and rollators being an option when you're feeling up to it
