I also think riding the horse gives no exp. I reached level 5 fairly quickly on foot, then bought a horse and went like 2 months without leveling up. So either the horse gives no exp or the experience needed to reach lvl 6 is significant
I may be missing something but I cannot seem to find a Traveling skill level bar in the pause menu. Could be an issue with 1.6. The mod loads and mod options appear in the mod config, but no bar. Been playing for a bit but haven't seen any level ups. If anyone knows anything pleas lmk
Based on an unofficial update for Luck Skill someone posted, it's a UI issue with SpaceCore and is being worked on. If you use a mod like Experience Bars, you'll see progress and level ups are indeed happening.
There's another bug (also to do with SpaceCore) that prevents you from choosing professions for this skill upon reaching levels 5 and 10, defaulting to the "left" choice.
I am loving this lore-friendly addition! I used to just gradually increase my speed with the cheat menu but that gets tedious, I forget, then I just want to skip to max. This keeps my cheatyness in check!
Here is a workaround to get exp when using mobile/Android. On Virtual Keyboard, create a button for any of the WASD; only one of these letters is necessary (I used W). You can then either spam the letter and it will increment eventually. Or, you can move as usual, then hit the button to register the steps. I only did it in short bursts, but it worked. I reduced the steps on the config so I wouldn't go insane.
So, my guess is the mod doesn't recognize the touchscreen move commands correctly, but pressing a makeshift key to represent a keyboard press seemed to trigger some step logging. I didn't see any errors on the SMAPI log, so I hope this helps!
EDIT: Sometimes if you walk a lot, press your designated virtual button multiple times to register all of the accumulated steps. The experience bar mod really helps with seeing this.

Not to pressure you or anything, but just wondering if there is a timelime as to when it might be updated.
