This is really creative! I had a quick question for you. How did you get your edits to show up in game? I've edited the spritesheet for the farmer base, but none of my edits seem to make it into the game. Do I have to make the edits elsewhere, as well?
The way I do it, I extract the sprite sheet from the game using this: http://www.mediafire.com/file/n2q2i44bi0nn738/XNB-Mod-Toolkitv2.zip Then I use XNB Mod Toolkit to pack the edited sprite sheet back into the .xnb extension. I take the packed file and paste it over the corresponding game file, much like one would install this very mod.
So, in my case, I took farmer_base.xnb and unpacked it, which gave me the sprite sheet. I edited it and once everything was OK I packed it into a file called farmer_base.xnb, then put it in Steam\steamapps\common\Stardew Valley\Content\Characters\Farmer, replacing the original one.
This was intended for my personal use so I don't think I'll ever tweak anything more unless I feel like it. Though if there's enough interest I guess I wouldn't mind people expanding on this themselves, as long as they let me know.

I'm sad.

This is the unpacked file of this mod. It's lazy and messy. I actually just applied a green filter over many of the sprites.
