Just to play devil's advocate... The dov are techinally gods/demigods as the children of Akatosh. Who says they can't shapeshift like the gods in so many myths? Just something to think about at 2 in the morning. Nothing in the lore, but then the Three Banners War has been "forgotten" by the time of the return of Alduin, so... What else has been lost to time? I'm guessing we're going to get a new lore with TESVI.
