      It worked for me; I went around, got their attention, jumped back over, and got the stuff to drop right on Sleepy and his overly-confident supervisor. That said, the rocks stay in place afterward and I have seen mercenaries run along the road and wipe themselves out on spent trap rocks in my playthroughs.
