About this mod

A small pack of alternate face normal maps for the men of Charmers of the Reach. Brow ridges for elves, and stuff. NOT replacer.

Update (April 11st):
Fixed ugly seam on the 5th normal map's eyelid. Added variations of 5, 6, and 7 normal maps with lip shapes and eyesockets that more closely resembles the default CotR male normal map, if you think their original lip shapes are too harsh/don't fit your chosen diffuse maps perfectly. The new normal maps have "_var" at the end of their names because I'm creative like that.

Install the update and let it override everything (it should only override the 5th file, the rest are new files).

In my experience, it's best to pair the brow ridge'd normal maps with some brow sculpting too--CotR has sliders that can replicate vanilla elven brow shapes. If you just put the new normal maps (or complexions, I should say) on a human-looking sculpt, they don't always look good.

(First and foremost, if any of my words make no sense, I apologize. Currently pulling an all-nighter on nothing but adrenaline from late night coffee and I think I have a fever kicking in. Fun.)

Charmers of the Reach has 10 options for face normal map for females, but only 4 for males. So I thought, hey, maybe I could make a few more. And I did just that.

What you'll get: 4 alternate normal maps based on CotR's assets (3 of them are female normal maps adapted to work for males, 1 is a blend of the original normal map and my shoddy mouse-painting), and 5 8 alternate normal maps based on vanilla (Bethesda's) elves and orcs. Because I want brow ridges on my CotR elves. I'm weird like that.

What this addon DOESN'T do: None of the new textures will overwrite CotR's original assets. These are not replacers. They're originally meant for my custom standalone followers (that I never shared on Nexus, but eh) and if I ever want to use it for my player character, I'll just replace the default malehead_msn.dds from the COR folder with one of my own. That said, if you have Kartoffel's Ultimate Headparts Addon, the first 3 normal maps are named such so that they'll appear in-game, in the Complexion slider.

Refer to the screenshots please.

1: Adapted from one of the COtR female normal maps. Jaws are more defined than default.
2: Adapted from one of the COtR female normal maps, with slightly edited eyelids. Softer lids and shallower eyesockets, I use this for Asian type faces mostly.
3: Adapted from one of the COtR female normal maps. Lip shapes are different than default, the top edges are harsher.
4: Adapted from (you guessed it) one of the COtR female normal maps, the "hidden" Dark Elf one. Tbh it doesn't look all that dark-elfy to me, but eh.
5: Blended with upscaled vanilla Dark Elf normal map, same lip shape as 3.
5 (var): Smoother lips and eyesockets version.
6: Blended with upscaled vanilla male Orc normal map, same lip shape (I think) as 3.
6 (var): Smoother lips version.
7: Blended with upscaled vanilla female Orc normal map, same lip shape as 1.
8: Blended with upscaled vanilla Wood Elf normal map, probably same lip shape as 3?
8 (var): Smoother lips version, yet again.
9: A normal map for my personal character. Basically the base normal map, with a bit more "weathering" and subtle wrinkle details.

Technical details: saved with BC7 Compression (let me know ASAP if the textures show up purple in-game or something, this is my first time fiddling with image compression and I'm anxious af), neck texture is the same as default CotR male normal map so most probably works best with Vitruvia.

All credits go to Charmers of the Reach and Bethesda.

Stuff that someone probably asks at some point in the future:

  • No female ver? The first 3 are available for females already, and I'm too lazy to adapt the rest. Maybe in the future.
  • The new textures don't show up in my game! Yeah, it's only textures. The only way to use it is to replace one of the existing normal maps (ex: malehead_msn.dds, maleheadcomplexion_age40_msn.dds, maleheaddetail_rough01_msn.dds ...you get the idea) with one of my textures, and then it'll show up. Or get this addon, and the first 3 normal maps will show up as malehead_msn_002.dds, malehead_msn_004.dds, and malehead_msn_005.dds. I know, it's a lot of work. But the only way I could get the new complexions to show up in game would be to edit CotR's race records, which would conflict with Kartoffel's addon, and a slew of other CotR's race patches out there, and it's a whole mess I'd rather not get into. Think of it as a tiny non-playable modder's resource.
  • Textures don't show up correctly/everything's purple/there's seam on my character's face! LET ME KNOW ASAP.
  • I got neckseam! Can't help you there, salroka. If using anything other than Vitruvia, please patch the neckseam yourself with something like Caliente's Texture Blender.
  • Textures are ugly/don't match up with the diffuse map I'm using! They're not perfect, yeah. Don't know what else to say.
  • Why do you even bother? Brow ridges on elves are fugly! Variety is the spice of life. Yeah, I could've just used High Poly Head to make the perfect orc I wanted that has all the wrinkles and forehead creases, but where's the fun in that? :)
  • What the bleep are "normal maps" anyway? Those thingies that make your textures have a 3D feel to them, like adding wrinkles, creases, nasolabial lines, and so on and so forth. In CotR terms these are referred as "complexions".
  • Can I use your texture for a follower mod/Racemenu preset/whathaveyou? The same permission rules from CotR applies. If they say it's ok to use their assets in a standalone thingy, then yeah, do whatever you want with this.
  • What the heck is that mod title? I ran out of ideas. How the heck do you guys name your mods anyway? Is there like a naming convention somewhere that I missed?
