They are there from the start, and you're describing a mod which only lets you get guards if you are thane. At worst this mod adds extra guards, which you don't need to be thane for, and it doesn't take up a slot in your load order. It should actually work well alongside Hearthfire Extended, adding even more protection.
Are there any requirements for this mod....I installed (admittedly mid game before I bought the two houses) and I get two identical guards that have black face...used setnpcweiight 100 and black face went away but now I have two identical twins.
By the way, I ran the mod through xEdit and saw this for all guards...

I don't know why so many people get dark faces everywhere, because I haven't encountered it with this mod or many of the others people complain about it in. I run several mods for fixing dark face bugs, so maybe that's it. Still, they're just made with vanilla assets and features, so they shouldn't have dark faces.
I made a version for personal use where I switched the guards for atronachs which are identical to the ones from your Atronach Guards at Myrwatch mod. I tested it a little bit and everything should be fine, I can give you the edited file if you want to upload it as an optional thing if you want.
Oh btw, I didn't do anything with the dog because I didn't know what to do about it.
If you want, I can remove the dogs from it. And then have it as an optional file that replaces the guards with those Storm Atronachs, which is certainly immersive for a mage character.
I've removed the dogs from it, along with the other records which were used by the guards but not the Atronachs. I can upload it as an optional file in this mod or as a seperate one specifically for Atronach guards at the homesteads. Currently leaning towards seperate, since this one is so clearly for normal guards. Since it was your idea and partly your work, obviously I'd credit you for helping create it, and list you as a creator as well as myself, but would you like me to also split the Donation points with you, or maybe send you donation points as thanks?
Oh no need, you can mention me as the person who had the idea but I'd feel bad for taking any other kind of credit or donation points. I mean all I did was copy your own records. Also the idea of uploading it as a separate thing sounds pretty good actually.
Okay. I'll make sure to credit you for the idea and input. I'll test it first, but then it should be all set. I considered adding an extra Atronach, but it seemed unnecessary.
I'm also working on human guards at Hendraheim and Tundra Homestead. I can probably have a version with Atronach guards for Hendraheim, but Tundra Homestead simply has hold guards around it, since it's so close to Whiterun. I don't know if you're interested in those, but I thought I should tell you.
I like this mod they are nice and simple but is there any way to change the armor of the guards to daedric armor or add some guards that are magicians?
I actually don't use AE. I have been considering placing guards at Hendraheim and Tundra Homestead. And maybe a couple of guard Atronachs at the wizard tower home.
Could use some guards for Hendraheim. The Savage Skyrim cave bear keeps killing off my home based follower lol. If only there were a couple guards and a dog to help out. The Plantation could use a couple wandering guards too. Severin Manor doesnt have any enemies around.
I like the mod overall. The guards do tend to go so far out that more often than not, the home is left undefended or at least no more than the current housecarl/steward. I came home to find my poor bard fending off three heavily armed bandits while the bard was just throwing punches. The guards were way out and had no clue what was happening. I'd prefer they stay at the house area if possible.
Yeah, I've found they're unreliable too. I'll make some changes to them soon. I'll see if I can forcibly keep them at the house, narrow their patrol range and maybe add guard dogs who just stay put.
I only have Lakeview in this playthrough but the dog spawned into the animal pen fence. The guards and dog all seem to be working fine otherwise. When my character was out looking for your more bosses chef I ran into the Windstad guards and dog. I don't have that home yet so they are spawning prior to owning the land or having house. Just FYI.
Not that I've noticed. You can buy supplies and livestock and hire staff like a bard and maybe a cook, but I've never seen guards as options to buy via the steward. Maybe that was a mod you were using. In any case, this can only add extra ones, even if there was another way to get them.
At worst this is an ESL plugin that adds two extra guards to each homestead. Many mods make Skyrim more dangerous, so extra guards in home locations where no hold guards exist seems beneficial.

Because the Hearthfire extension allows you to spend money to purchase guards.

Technically the spellsword guard at Winstad is a mage, which made sense when that's the only one of the three holds that doesn't look down on magic.

Update: guard dogs added.
