If Meeko dies it's because the essential flag isn't set; you've probably met the dog before the mod was installed.

The setessential command requires the baseID to be used, which in case of Meeko is usually 000D95E9. According to your post it could be different, so you'll need to find out what his current baseID is in your game. To do so:

      1. Open the console and type: help Meeko
      2. A couple of entries will appear, but the one you need is: NPC_: (baseID) 'Meeko'
      3. Take note of the baseID
      4. Type: setessential (Meeko's baseID) 1

Hello, I'm very excited for this mod, but Meeko won't reskin. He remains the same shaggy vanilla, this happens even with this mod loaded last.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Anyone have any ideas for me? Thanks.

You are not alone.  I tried the unarmored husky, and that didn't work, so I tried the armored husky and that didn't work. Meeko just stays a wolf hound.  Maybe it is because I have Essential Dogs installed, or maybe it only works if you start a new game. I have no idea.

Alright, finally looked into this issue and was able to swap between all versions without a hitch through multiple save files. While it's not recommended to disable a mod mid playthrough, tick off whatever version you're using in your mod manager and then enable the one you want. The game will complain about content being missing the next time you load a save but it'll (probably) be fine.

For example, you installed the Unarmored Husky version but later decided you wanted the Armored Husky one. You need to:

      1. Open your mod manager of choice, disable "ImprovedMeeko-UnarmoredHusky.esp" in your load order and preferably remove the mod files.
      2. Install "Improved Meeko - Armored Husky" and enable "ImprovedMeeko-ArmoredHusky.esp" in your load order.

For some odd reason, this mod made Meeko unable to attack anything in combat... Just Meeko though and not Vigilance

Description page says it changed behavior to Unagressive.
You can open ESP with SSEEdit and change it to Agressive.

Thank you :)! Such a cute (armored husky version here) lovable and brave companion, not overpowered at all but durable and already saved my life a couple of times with his quick reflexes!

I have the armored version of Meeko, and this mod is magnificent.  Meeko and Inigo get along well and the battles are great. Thanks for this.

Is there anyway to reduce his barking - it was kind of cool at first.....but is now really annoying.

I see a few mods for Meeko, but none for Vigilance - http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vigilance - or Barbas - http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Barbas_(Skyrim). Is there a reason for that?

Meeko is obtained for free. Vigilance has a price-tag. Barbas is tied to a quest which can result in you deliberately killing him for the sake of obtaining a Daedric artefact.

Would be nice to see this kind of mod for at least Vigilance though, as he is *supposedly* a war dog, although he lacks the traits and characteristics of a war dog. It's like Neloth is supposedly Telvanni but displays no Telvanni characteristics. By lore Telvanni should be rude, arrogant, insulting, condescending, etc, in attitude and especially when talking to outsiders such as the player. These are all traits that Neloth seemingly lacks. Also Bran and Sceolang could do with a mod that overhauls their traits, just like this mod.

BTW, currently running the armoured version of this with armoured Garm (Dawnguard armour), plus a custom black wolf texture from Bellyache's creature textures pack as I found other Husky textures (from Oldrim as there's none for SSE so far) to be too pristine and clean for my liking. Wolf textures are compatible with the husky mesh, and there's even mods to the vanilla wolf mesh with the husky mesh.

Is Meeko adoptable with this mod? I've tried bringing him to Markarth where I have an adopted child, but the dialogue to keep him never seems to trigger.

    -edit-
Tried it without this mod and I still get no adoption dialogue, so I presume AFT or something else may have broken it. Or do dog adoptions only work in the Hearthfire homes?

Sorry for the wait. According to the UESP wiki: "Some creatures may follow your adopted children home, which they will ask to keep as a pet. They may also ask to adopt one of your dogs. You can have up to one wild pet and one dog at a time."

So, it does work with both base game and Hearthfire houses. Might indeed be a conflict with AFT.
