Description

Inspired by Oldschool Runescape Treasure Trails and dissatified by the puzzles (snake, snake, whale...) in Skyrim, I decided to make this mod.

Once you've found a clue scroll and read it (technically they are books), you 'll need to solve it. There are 4 different categories: "Anagram", "Hot and Cold", "Cryptic" and "Perform" Clues.

Once you've solved the clue, you'll either get another clue scroll, or a clue chest. The chance to obtain a clue chest will increase depending on the number of clue scrolls you've completed in the chain you're on:

  • One clue scroll completed -> 10% on a clue chest
  • Two clue scrolls completed -> 25% on a clue chest
  • Three clue scrolls completed -> 50% on a clue chest
  • Four clue scrolls completed -> 75% on a clue chest
  • Five clue scrolls completed -> 100% on a clue chest

Once you've received the clue chest, the percentages will reset to be ready for a next chain. The reward you get will get better when you reach higher levels, but even at level 1, it's quite generous.

Where to find them

Clue scrolls have been added to the leveled lists and will show up randomly in boss chests. (chests at the end of a dungeon.) If you don't have any other mods editing the leveled lists, you'll have a 1 in 8 chance to get a clue scroll from a boss chest. Clue scrolls will no longer show up if you already have one in your inventory. So if you have one make sure to complete it.

I've added an easy to find clue scroll at the top of Whiteriver Watch, near the boss bandit, in a knapsack, next to his chair.

Anagram Clues

These clues contain an anagram of a person in Skyrim to talk to.

For instance, "Dho" -> "Hod"

Hot And Cold Clues

This kind of clues require you to search Skyrim and dig up the treasure, using a dwemer apparatus (uses a lesser power) to determine how far away you are.
To get the dwemer apparatus, you'll need to talk to Calcelmo and either buy, persuade or intimidate him to get one.
Once you have apparatus, you need to activate in your inventory to receive the lesser power.
While outside in Skyrim (not in any walled cities), having the apparatus and relevant clue scroll in your inventory, you can use the lesser power.
It will indicate whether the apparatus feels very cold, cold, warm, hot, very hot or extremely hot depending on how close you are. It will also indicate whether the apparatus feels warmer or colder than when you last checked to help you determine you're getting closer or further away.
Once you're at the spot, you'll be prompted to dig up the next clue scroll or clue chest. This requires you to have a shovel in your inventory though, don't forget this if you want to avoid backtracking!

Cryptic Clues

Cryptic clues are similar to anagrams, but they will use a cryptic description of the person you need to talk to next.

Perform Clues

This category of clues will tell you to wear 3 random weapons/pieces of armor, go to certain interior and do a perform a certain action there.

For instance: "Sneak in Dragonsreach, while wearing a Steel Sword, Iron Gauntlets and Dwarven Boots."

Optional files
  • Silverlight: gives you a 2% change to get Silverlight as a possible reward at the end of a clue. Once obtained, you won't get any copies of it. As its OSRS variant, it deals additional damage to Daedra (Demons) and will Banish lower level Daedra.

Troubleshooting

You can never have more than 1 clue with you at the same time. Doing so will remove them and reset your clue progress. If you receive a second clue scroll, while you already have one, you'll be given a choice:
  • Keep the current scroll, maintain your progress in the treasure trial and remove the new scroll.
  • Take the new clue scroll, but remove the current one and reset your progress.

Likewise, you cannot drop or store clue scrolls and clue chests in containers, or give them to NPCs. Doing so will ask you whether you would like to remove them and reset your progress.

When you have a clue with you, no other clues should show up, but the 2 failsafes above should take care of that.

Sometimes a clue might point to a person that's dead. In this case, just drop the clue to reset it and prepare you to receive a next clue.

FAQ

Q: Could you add questmarkers that lead to the targets/include something to make the clues easier?
A: No. Doing that would defeat the purpose of this mod, namely to have Skyrim have more challenging puzzles, rather than the Vanilla "chasing the questmarker" or "snake/snake/whale" puzzles.

Q: Why can't I have more than one scroll in my inventory?
A: It will break the progression system, so I had to make sure you cannot have more than one. Just the way it is, like in Old School RuneScape.

Q: Will you add more unique treasures as a reward?
A: Maybe, if there's enough demand, I might include a patch for other treasure mods.

Q: ESPFE?
A: Yes.

Q: Does installing/updating/uninstalling on an existing save work?
A: As far as I know, it should. However, it's good practice to keep a backup save prior to doing this, just in case.

Q: Is this compatible with <insert mod>?
A: I don't know by heart. You might need to check yourself.

Q: Will you make a patch for <insert mod>?
A: Only if it's a mod I use myself or plan on using, I have enough time and I actually like the idea. Otherwise, feel free to do it yourself. (see permissions)

Q: I have a suggestion to improve the mod. Can you do it?
A: Maybe, if I have time and I like the idea, I'll consider it.

Q: Will you port this to <insert platform>?
A: No, I myself only support the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If someone else wants to port it, feel free. (see permission) If you decide to port it, you yourself take full responsibility to offer support to said port. I will not provide no support for any ports by third parties.

Q: I use a ported version of this mod on <insert platform> and I have a problem. Can you help?
A: I don't provide any support for third party ports on other platforms than the Steam and GOG English SE and AE versions of Skyrim. If you have issues, you should adress the person that ported it.

Q: Does this work on Skyrim 1.6+, aka "Anniversary Edition"?
A: Yes, it should.

Q: Why don't your mods use MCMs and instead use this janky console command system to set globals?
A: I am not a fan of MCMs. You can set the globals by making a patch in xEdit. I have no plans of changing this. If you want to add an MCM, feel free. (see permissions)

Q: Why don't you use FOMODs?
A: That would require reuploading the entire mod, in question, even if I only make a small change. My internet is limited and reuploading the files each time will take a huge chunk of my monthly volume.
