For this I just recreated the faces using the same faceparts (brows, hair) and skin tone, eyes etc., and then did the usual stuff with nifoptimizer and nifmerge. This way you just have to replace the .nif file without editing the nif. The important thing is that what you have in the .nif corresponds to what is in the Creation Kit facegen parts. I have a full tutorial on how to make NPCs here in case you want to take a look on the details of merging nifs etc.
I wish more authors would choose the ESP-less head-replacer route. HPH just doesn't add that much to the appearance of a character that you see maybe every few hours. Definitely not worth the cost of making the facegen incompatible with the stock ESP head. That's why Botox is my core NPC 'improver'.
I am glad we are still getting more content for that mod. I think it's a very reliable alternative to the bigger sex mods... the only downside is the few animations.
