Aeonbarr (the previous version) was one of the first mods I ever made. Really proud of it, but it had some serious flaws:
      1) Super buggy
      2) Didn't work well without Convenient Horses
      3) way more customization options that necessary, I think too much choice can be as bad as too little
      4) the quest to obtain Aeonbarr was a bit over-the-top and unfocused.

      Aenbyr, by comparison:
      1) I've been making mods for several years now, I'm just better at it. This mod is much less buggy (I've tested it and fixed every bug I've found, inevitably someone will find something else at some point but it'll be minor and I'll fix it) and also much faster and more compatible with other mods.
      2) I've split this mod into two versions, one specifically designed for use without Convenient Horses (which I personally prefer).
      3) This version actually has better customization fields, but fewer options within those fields to keep file size down and avoid over-saturation of choice... I would say this mod takes the quality-over-quantity approach to customization, and the old mod was quantity-over-quality, which made it buggy and bloated
      4) The new quest is way more straightforward and fits into the game better I think.

Plus, bonus for Aenbyr: compatibility with Wild Horses and Horses Armors, if you're into the Creation Club.

My favorite horse mod, active in all my playthroughs, whether i use a horse or not. Even better since Ride Sharing was updated.✨

This needs a "Settings Loader", tough. It's though having to redo all the settings each new save.🤧

Very true.  I think most of us are at that point where the MCM starts to feel like 'a hill to climb' LoL
Nonetheless, excellent mod. One of the best mounts ever

Im using the Better Horses tweak from Misc. Tweaks Collection, which makes horses slightly faster, more maneuverable, and have more Stamina. Would these changes also apply to Aenbyr, or will they not get applied because Aenbyr is in some ways distinct from the regular horses (e.g., different faction, creature type, etc.)?

This pairs remarkably well with Simplest Horses. I was able to rename Aenbyr, toggle his wait/follow behavior, access his saddlebags, and teleport him to my location all using the single "H" key (which is the default for Simplest Horses). The customization options of this mod blended with the simplicity of that mod are the perfect match for me.

Thanks very much for the mod! I used the original Aenonbarr some years ago, but had some troubles with it. Ever since then, I kept going back to that page whenever I started a new playthrough, hoping to see an update. It wasn't until I finally googled "Skyrim customizable horse" that I found this one.

There are three horse's names that would be fun to ad if possible.

Kelpie = A kelpie is a shape-changing aquatic spirit of Scottish legend. Its name may derive from the Scottish Gaelic words ‘cailpeach’ or ‘colpach’,
meaning heifer or colt. Kelpies are said to haunt rivers and streams,
usually in the shape of a horse.
    - History of UK.
You might have seen Kelpie is in God of War: Ragnarok, were Kratos rode a Kelpie to find the Witches. Ciri's horse in The Witcher lore was also named Kelpie.

Kvasir = in Norse mythology a poet and the wisest of all men. Kvasir was born of the saliva of two rival groups of gods, the Aesir and the Vanir, when they performed the ancient peace ritual of spitting into a common
vessel. He wandered around teaching and instructing, never failing to give the right answer to a question. Two dwarfs, Fjalar and Galar, who were weary of academics and learning, killed Kvasir and distilled.
His blood in Odhrǫrir, the magic caldron. When mixed with honey by the giant Suttung, his blood formed mead that gave wisdom and poetic inspiration to those who drank it. The story of Kvasir’s murder is told in the Braga Raedur (“Conversations of Bragi”), one of the Eddas.
    - Britannica.

Gulltoppr: "Golden mane", "Golden top." One of the steeds the Æsir ride each day when they go to their tribunal at Yggdrasil, according to Grímnismál. Snorri Sturluson in Gylfaginning assigns Gulltoppr to Heimdallr.
For some reason he is a cat in God of War: Ragnarok, hes not a cat he's a horse.

Love you're mod, keep up the great work

Is this compatible with horse replacers?
I am intending to use Real Horses:
Real Horses at Skyrim Special Edition Nexus - Mods and Community (nexusmods.com)

    - horse models as the base. I do know that Aenbyr is compatible with Oblivion Horse Replacer, but I am hoping to use Real Horses' instead.

+1 for this question. Except that I'm referring to this mod. I'm deep into my current game with IH installed, but would love to add this mod.

I read this as a comment rather than a question. I'll test it myself to confirm when I get a chance... in the meantime, could anyone using both these mods comment on whether it seems compatible or not? From reading the mod page I expect they would be. Can probably use the Independent Version with IH

Not sure if anyone has tried the 2 together yet or not. I may attempt slotting this in and seeing how it goes as I'm also running Immersive Horses. To be fair I haven't done much with horse related mods due to generally running with Arvak.

      I've tested it myself.
Turns out, I really don't like Immersive Horses. Fair play to anyone who does, but it's not for me. And there's a lot of incompatibility between the two, too much for me to fix for the sake of a mod I don't want to use. If anyone wants to make a patch, be my guest, otherwise I'm going to conclude the two mods aren't compatible

      Appreciate the reply/followup Zimm!
Since I'm still heavily considering using this myself I may consider looking into making some changes .  I know there was a reason I was using Immersive over the other mod for horses but I need to see if it's still a reason i need to keep it around or not.

If it's still in your memory, what incompatibilities were encountered? No pressure if you don't remember.

More specifically, would you consider them hard incompatible (breaking each other and making Aenbyr unusable completely), or soft incompatible (two mods ignore each other)?

I ask mostly out of curiosity as I run both Immersive Horses and Unicorn (https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/3543). While they're not "compatible" in that Immersive Horses features don't
work on Unicorn, they're still compatible in that Immersive Horses doesn't even seem to realize Unicorn is a horse at all. So they play fine together by means of not breaking each other. (Which in my opinion is actually kind of cool. Keeps normal domestic horses useful as loyal steeds, with Unicorn being an incredible mount but disloyal and will flee from a wolf into the woods never to be seen again the moment you look away. Sometimes soft incompatibilities end up being cooler than compatibilities.)

Was Aenbyr more like Unicorn and ignored? Or were features attempting to work in incompatible ways that clashed and broke each other?

If one wanted to make a custom name for this horse through xEdit, would the options be to either (let's pretend we want to name the horse 'Horsey McHorseface'):

     1. Copy as override and rename all entries related to an existing name (e.g. change Message entry xxOC5F0F Name01 'Aesir' to 'Horsey McHorseface', and change the corresponding Spell entries for Summon_Spell and Summon_Power for 'Call Aesir' to 'Call Horsey McHorseface'?

     2. Add a Name51 'Horsey McHorseface', add a Summon_Spell and Summon_Power for that name, and then also add it as a Object Union #51 a Spell and a Power to summon it under the Quest entry ZHorse_Quest? Then also add Array of String option for Element #51 under ZHorse_MCM quest?

Both options would work (I think), but I'd definitely recommend option 1, that's much less invasive. One point to add: if you want the name to be changed in the MCM menu as well, you'll need to edit something else: on ZHorse_MCM, there's an array property called Menu00StringOptions, this contains all the names as strings for use in the MCM menu. Change whichever one you want

Thank you! Yes, I discovered that as well. I went with option 1 and also changed the array property before I kicked off. I'm over 100 hours in now I think and it has worked perfectly. This my favourite horse mod on The Citadel.

Hello, wonderful mod, have been a fan since Aeonbarr back in oldrim! I'm curious, is there a way to change the mesh? I am sad that Aeonbarr and Aenbyr look like the default vanilla horses. I'm using Light Horses of Skyrim (Realistic body and fur)

I know nothing about modding and I can't find help online, is there any way you could help with this?

Thank you so much for your contributions to the modding community.

Does Aenbyr count toward any sort of horse limit? Such as if I initially have a horse I bought from one of the hold stables, then acquire Aenbyr, would I lose the previously acquired horse or is Aenbyr completely separate? Mainly asking as ideally in my next eventual save I hope to acquire Shadowmere and Frostmere in game and plan on using a mod that just lets me 'stable' mounts w/o losing them.

It works like acquiring any other horse.
For example, if you acquire Shadowmere and then buy a horse from Whiterun and start riding that, Shadowmere will stop following you and return to his stable location (which I believe is the pool outside the Dark Brotherhood, but I'm not sure on that). Then if you go and reclaim Shadowmere, your Whiterun horse will return to its stable location, i.e. the Whiterun Stables. Aenbyr works exactly the same.

Great mod thank you. Maybe a cautionary tale for some, I started this on a low level character and could not beat the Heroes. So I left and planned to come back later all tooled up like. For me the door by the brazier had shut and I could not complete. I wanted to complete the quest and earn the steed. I had to remove the mod, clean the save, apply the mod again and start from fresh and complete the quest.

Again thank you for the amazing horse and loved the back story.
