A mod to assign approximately 50 new outfits to around 160 named NPCs throughout Skyrim, using only vanilla Skyrim & DLC assets. The outfits are distributed using SPID, so no NPC records are changed, eliminating the need for patches for overhauls.

I've tried to keep everything as lore friendly as possible, but the mod is highly configurable if you want to distribute the outfits in your own way. I've added Dunmer outfits to most Dunmers, Redguard outfits to most Redguards and added some unused (or little used) outfits from the vanilla game such as green college robes, mourner's clothes and others.

I've looked at nearly every NPC in Skyrim (DLCs excluded for now) and given around 160 of them a more appropriate outfit. I've excluded a few by choice to keep some original flavour and no doubt I've missed some, but you can add any NPCs you wish to the config file.

My Process
I've taken into consideration several factors when assigning outfits. I've included their profession, gender, race, location, routine, social class and their wealth, as well as their age. This means a wealthy NPC will be more likely to wear fancy jewellery and a more expensive looking outfit. Working class NPCs will be more likely to wear cheaper outfits and less jewellery. If their routine is mostly outdoors they'll wear more layers and the further north you travel, you'll see more NPCs wearing gloves, hats and fur lined boots, especially if they're not Nords. If they're older they'll also wear warmer clothing. NPCs that work outdoors will be more used to the cold weather, especially if they are Nord.

I've changed a number of NPCs that had outfits that didn't suit them, including adding barkeep outfits to some inkeepers that had farm clothes and miner outfits to miners who were also wearing farm clothes. Other examples include Jon Battle-Born who now has civilian clothes instead of the iron armour he was wearing. He wants to be a bard and he's not a warrior, so it made no sense to me for him to walk round in armour. Similarly with Amren, he's retired to look after his family, so I've given him civilian clothes. Asgeir Snow-Shod tells you he is in mourning when you meet him so he now wears mourner's clothes.

I've also incorporated the changes from one of my other mods that changes any females that start the game with the Tavern Clothes to wear the Chef's Outfit instead.

As well as outfits I've also attempted to integrate some DLC items by adding them to selected merchants and blacksmiths. As Riften and Solitude are near the border with Morrowind and both have quite a few Dunmer living there, it made sense to give them Morrowind items.

Likewise Grelka has a chance to stock some Dawnguard items including a crossbow and some armour pieces. Balimund also stocks crossbow bolts and has a chance of having some Dawnguard armour pieces. You can alter the chances by editing the lines in the ini file, for example;

;Dawnguard Shield
Item = 020150B8~Skyrim.esm|Grelka|NONE|NONE|NONE|1|50

This gives Grelka a 50% chance of having one Dawnguard shield for sale. You can change the 50 to any number between 1 and 100 to decrease or increase the chance of it being in her inventory. You can change the quantity by changing the 1 to something else.

If you just want the clothing changes and not the extra DLC integration you can delete anything after the following line;

;------------------Add DLC items to merchants

Or delete individual lines as you see fit.

As the items are distributed by SPID it's a one-time only thing, the vendors will not restock items if you buy them. I just thought it would be an immersive way to get DLC items without having to join Dawnguard or travel to Solstheim. No items are added to levelled lists, they are added to hand-picked vendors' inventory.

See the article for a full list of named NPCs covered by the mod, including my reasoning for the change.

Compatibility:
Should be compatible with anything, obviously if other mods change the same NPC outfits they may conflict, so my mod needs to be loaded after any other mod that changes their outfits. Whichever mod loads last will assign the outfit you prefer to an NPC. Or if two mods cover the same NPCs, you can edit the DISTRI.ini file of that mod and remove any NPCs that clash. For example you could use this mod as a base for the more generic NPCs, then use other SPID mods for individual outfit mods. I've designed it to be as versatile as possible.

Notes:
SPID distributes the outfits when the game starts, so if you install this mod after you've already encountered an NPC, the outfits they previously wore will be baked into the save. If you don't see the new outfit or they are naked, open the console, click on the NPC and type 'resetinventory'. For best results use this mod on a new game and make any changes to the config file before starting.

Installation:
Works best on a new game. Simply install like you would any other mod using your favourite mod manager, or to install manually (not recommended) just unpack it and drop it into your Skyrim data folder. As the mod uses SPID which is an SKSE plug-in, it should be safe to uninstall, but you would need to use the 'resetinventory' command on any affected NPCs.

Configuration:
Hopefully most users will be happy with the mod as it is, but you can easily distribute the outfits to other NPCs in the game, or change the outfits assigned from one NPC to another. Just open the folder containing the mod, then open the file 'MoreAppropiateOutfits_DISTRI.ini' in a text editor such as Notepad. Each outfit is described briefly in the comments and there are images for most outfits for your reference.

As an example if you would prefer barkeep clothes on Gort instead of the Skaal outfit, find the line in the ini file that says;

;Unisex Skaal Full
Outfit = 0x803~MoreAppropriateOutfits.esp|Alfarinn,Gort,Thaer,Harlaug,Jorgen,Ulundil

And the line that says;

;Male Barkeep Beige
Outfit = 0x807~MoreAppropriateOutfits.esp|Kjeld

And move Gort to this line, with a comma, EG Outfit = 0x807~MoreAppropriateOutfits.esp|Kjeld,Gort

IMPORTANT NOTE 1 - if you move an NPC's name from a list that leaves the list empty it may cause errors. If you don't want to use that outfit either delete the whole line or a add a ; at the start of the line so the ini file will ignore it.

IMPORTANT NOTE 2 - if you assign an outfit to an NPC that they're already wearing, they will be naked due to a game engine limitation. For example if you assign the chef's outfit to Gianna, by default she already wears the chef's clothes so the distribution won't work and she will be naked.

IMPORTANT NOTE 3
- some NPCs simply won't work with SPID as they change outfits at different stages of the game. Delphine and Ulfrich are two that I know of, there are probably more.

IMPORTANT NOTE 4 - outfits are marked as male, female or unisex. Unisex outfits will work on male or female but if you assign a male outfit to a female or female outfit to a male, it may not look right.

Some outfits are distributed to bandits and Forsworn at random. Bandits have a chance of having a random iron armour mash-up and Forsworn have a chance of wearing iron armour which seems more practical than the skimpy armour they wear by default. You can change the chance of them getting the outfit by editing the percentage chance in the corresponding lines.

Example

;Unisex Bandit Mashup 1 (Iron Armour Hide Bracers & Hat)
Outfit = 0x80F~MoreAppropriateOutfits.esp|TypeBandit|NONE|NONE|NONE|NONE|5

If you want a higher or lower chance of bandits getting this outfit, simply change the 5 to a lower or higher value. For more distribution options see the main SPID page. If you don't want this outfit in your game at all, delete the whole line.

If there's any outfit you don't like, just delete the line from the ini file. For example if you don't want Dunmer to have Dunmer outfits, delete all the lines that have Dunmer outfit comments. Likewise if you don't want the Forsworn changes, delete the lines in the ini file that refer to the Forsworn outfits.

Important - don't delete any of the ; (semi-colons) in the config file (unless you're deleting the whole line). I'd recommend making a back up of the ini file before editing it, but if you mess it up you can always just install the mod again.

FAQ
Q: Can you make NPCs remove items or change clothes to reflect the weather?
A: No, this is beyond the scope of this mod.

Q: Can you do a version with no hats?
A: No, the hats are to add immersion for colder areas. If you don't want them you can remove them from the outfit records using xEdit.

Q: Does it work with SE/AE?
A: Yes, providing you get the correct version of SPID for your version of Skyrim.
