About this mod

A simple mod that adds cooking recipes for alcohol-based tinctures that can be crafted at a cooking pot.

Version 1.1 out now! I fixed the scrambled potion effects.

Folk Remedies

This mod was inspired by the, "A little wheat and some blisterwort," line spoken by many an NPC in various apothecaries around Skyrim. The premise was more roleplay inspired rather than mechanics inspired: Why couldn't the average Nord in the field just stick some blisterwort in a bottle of ale and let it sit for a while instead of having to pay for a quick mend? What else could you mix with various alcohols to make poor-man's potions?

This is not a grand overhaul to the entire alchemy system - I'm definitely not capable of something that complex and others are way ahead of me there - this mod simply adds recipes that one can make at a cooking pot to simulate this concept of, "Stick some herbs in a solvent and let it do its thing." The effects aren't overpowered - in fact they're slightly weaker than average minor potions one would find in the wild - but they don't require any alchemy skill to use. Perfect for roleplaying characters who have some herb lore but aren't necessarily skilled with an alembic.

In total, this mod adds 34 new "potions" using vanilla, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn ingredients. This mod hasn't been tested against, for example, CACO, but I don't think it should have any conflicts, so long as the base drinks (like ale, wine, sujamma) aren't renamed or reassigned or something like that. If you do find an incompatibility, report that bug! I'll see what I can do to fix it.

There may end up being a slight incompatibility with Mazte because I corrected the typo. (The base ID hasn't been altered at all.) Other mods might make this redundant or awkward, but it seems to work in my game so far.

Tinctures
In an effort to keep this mod as lore-friendly as possible, I've based the new tincture effects on what seems like the most reasonable main ingredient for each drink, and what can be added to those ingredients at an alchemy table to make a viable potion. I did my best to keep it simple and believable. There are a few drinks I didn't add bonuses to - for example, Argonian Bloodwine is basically a tincture unto itself already.

ALE
Ale is the only drink of its kind in vanilla Skyrim, and is based on the Wheat ingredient. Tinctures made from this will fortify and restore health, in addition to its ordinary effects.

MEAD
Nord Mead, Black-Briar Mead, and Honningbrew Mead are all based on the Honeycomb ingredient. Tinctures made from these restore stamina and fortify light armor. Juniper Mead and Ashfire Mead are rare enough and pre-spiced enough that making tinctures from them is slightly impractical.

WINE and FLIN
Wine, Alto Wine, Surilie Brothers Wine, Firebrand Wine, and Flin are all based on the Jazbay Grapes ingredient. Tinctures made from these fortify and regenerate magicka, in addition to any ordinary effects. Firebrand Wine has an additional Resist Frost effect, while the Spiced Wine from Solitude has too many ingredients in it already (due to the spices) for it to make a viable tincture base.

MAZTE
Mazte is a special beverage, hailing from Morrowind, and is based on the Saltrice ingredient. (Which is from the CC but isn't a requirement - I just used it as an effects reference.) Tinctures made from this can restore health, restore stamina, and/or fortify magicka.

SHEIN and SUJAMMA
Shein and Sujamma both hail from Morrowind, and are based on the Comberry ingredient. (Which is a CC ingredient but isn't a requirement.) Tinctures made from these can restore magicka and fortify destruction - they are quite spicy!

Some of these tinctures have multiple recipes involving different ingredients, but all can be made in a cookpot without having any skill whatsoever in alchemy. None of them cure poison or disease, and they're like that for a good reason - apothecaries do exist in Skyrim, and one would assume they do so for a reason.

Future Ideas
- Skooma-based tinctures (based on Moon Sugar - this wasn't implemented already because is skooma a solvent?? Needs more thought and possibly some handwavery.)
- Patches for beverages found in Wyrmstooth, Falskaar, and Bruma (which will take significant time and effort and I want to gauge interest first)
- Patch for iNeed, potentially (which... I'm not sure I know how to patch, but I at least want to figure out how to apply the, "you are now drunk" effect.)

As far as I can tell, CACO just... overhauls ALL the things. I'm not sure a patch would even be possible or if this even fits in with that system. If anyone wants to test and/or patch this, please feel free to do so.

Recommended Mods
- Campfire (for cooking on the go, perfect for the type of "on-the-road, alchemy-inept ranger" type that I imagine using this)
- Bottles of Skyrim (in case you for whatever reason end up with the "can't pick up ale or wine" bug that I definitely had in those screenshots)
- Hunterborn (as long as we're making tinctures, Strange Brew fits right in, right?)
